Look, it is 2016. Due to the cycles of how dance seasons are delineated at my job, I've actually been working on the 2016 season since like June, so it's vaguely baffling to me that other people have been in 2015 for so long. It feels more like the rest of the world has finally caught up to the correct year.

(If that doesn't make sense, I should also note that due to mild but aggravating illness, I haven't managed to sleep through the night for about a week now, which means I'm basically slogging through a haze of mildly disgruntled exhaustion at this point. I've never had virus-induced insomnia before. It's a pain in the ass.)

I did manage to accomplish Yuletide at the last minute, go me. So here's mine:

My recipient specifically requested NO SLASH. Which I'm fine with on general principle -- the heart wants what the heart wants! -- but it was surprisingly difficult to write a pairing that I DO ship pretty hard as gen. (This isn't usually an issue for me, but in a year where writing ANYTHING has been like pulling teeth, it's hard to make myself write something that I wouldn't normally choose to read.) And a small, petty part of my brain thinks that I'd have gotten a lot more hits if I'd been permitted to make it even mildly shippy. But whatever, it was fun to write once I got into the groove (last-minute panic always helps), and I very much hope the recipient enjoyed it!

Happy 2015, folks. May it be far more awesome than the year that preceded it. Yes, even if you had an excellent 2014 already.

My year was...mostly good on the social front (friendship is magic, etc), and significantly less good on the career front, but at least that part ended on an up note? So here's to positivity and optimistic beginnings, I guess. And I'll be turning 30 this year, so, y'know, milestones and stuff.

Also, Yuletide reveals! I can now thank [archiveofourown.org profile] Aderam properly for my gift fic, What the Fuk Is That?, and again reiterate the need for everyone to read Tanya Huff's books so that we can talk about them properly. And I wrote a thing:

OKAY LOOK, I have a bit of an obsession with the most excellent and nerdy webseries Cracked: After Hours, and YOU SHOULD TOO. Basically, it's four friends hanging out in a diner discussing pop culture, and it is glorious and hilarious and many other adjectives as well! Each episode is only 6-8 mins long, you don't have to watch them in any kind of order (although the evolution of their in-jokes is super fun to experience, if you do go in order), and you become...strangely attached to those characters. (They're three cracked.com writers and their comedienne buddy, and they're basically playing caricatures of themselves.) If you need more convincing, [personal profile] fiercynn and [personal profile] scribe made an excellent After Hours fandom primer a little while back, they make a much more eloquent argument than I can.

But yeah, I was most pleased when I received this assignment, because it gave me an excuse to write my own episode of the show. I picked Doctor Who as a topic mainly because it's super geeky and yet has never yet been mentioned on the show itself, and just kind of spun out from there. Creating the graphics was by far the most time-consuming aspect of this one, but I was very determined to recreate the comedic style of the show, and therefore there must be visual aids. This one was just pure ridiculous fun to write. Enjoy!

Additional Tags: Established Relationship, domestic anxiety, talking out your stupid feelings, other people's weddings
Summary: In which Vince is stalked by a wedding invitation, Manchester hasn't changed nearly enough, and Stuart knows what he wants, thank you very much.

You don't understand, I have been offering QAF UK for Yuletide for about seven or eight years running now, and never ONCE have I been matched for this fandom. I am so happy I finally got the chance to write it! My prompt from [livejournal.com profile] hildigunnur was: "Fourteen years later, Vince and Stuart find themselves in Manchester again. Nathan is getting married, Alfred has a girlfriend and Hazel just meddles in everything." I was initially stumped by this prompt, to be honest -- future!fic and domesticity are not my usual cup of tea -- but once I forced myself to just sit down and start writing whatever came into my head, I realized that the real issue was going to be what Nathan getting married meant for Vince, specifically. Vince has always been torn between his simultaneous desire for and abject terror of commitment; running off with Stuart at the end of the series allowed him to indulge his love/devotion to his best friend without any of the trappings of permanency and domesticity that make him feel so trapped. (I mean, it's more complicated than that, but still.) So once I got Vince's voice in my head, this all tumbled out in the space of like 36 hours. Also because I left it so last-minute, oops. Anyway. It was fun to finally write these two properly, and my recipient seemed to enjoy it, so that's all good.

There was one Sleepy Hollow treat I badly wanted to write based on a prompt that gave me ALL THE BUNNIES, but I never did have time for it. May wind up writing that fic anyway, eventually, although I maybe I should ask permission to use their prompt first, since the exchange is over? Not sure what the protocol is there.
kaydeefalls: drunk!raven pointing at YOU (queen's gambit)
My Yuletide fic continues to be more or less nonexistent, with less than 36 hours to deadline, so that's a thing. But in the meantime, Secret Mutant fics have been revealed! I haven't been posting about this at all, because me and the free time this week haven't been very mixy, and I haven't read very many of the fics yet so I can't do a rec post -- um, not that I ever do rec posts, I suck -- but I did get the most fantastic gift EVER: Xmas in Connecticut, by the incomparable Yahtzee. It's already been recced all over the place, for good reason, but guys, it's REALLY REALLY GOOD. Charles/Erik on the homefront in WWII, Raven being SPECTACULAR, and very sweet background Raven/Hank. READ IT. LOVE IT.

So then I wrote a thing. Or, well, two things, one for the exchange proper and one for Secret Mutant Madness. But both in the same 'verse. I feel like these are very obviously my fics, but because the main fic focused on an unpopular ship, not many people read them or would know to link them to me. ANYWAY.

tell them I ain't coming back (14186 words) by kaydeefalls

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Armando Muñoz/Alex Summers, Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Armando Muñoz, Alex Summers, Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, Raven | Mystique, Hank McCoy, Emma Frost, Angel Salvadore
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Crossover, Alternate Universe - Space, Families of Choice, Spaceships, Slow Burn, Plotty, POV Character of Color
Summary: In which the crew of Cerebro picks up a passenger on a border moon, Emma has a lead on an anti-mutant conspiracy, and Armando might be getting more than he bargained for. (Fusion with the Firefly 'verse.)

My recipient, unveiled, prompted: "Darwin and Havok IN SPACE!" -- which, for me, obviously meant a Firefly fusion, because there is nothing in the world I enjoy more than crossovers with Firefly. Plus, I've always liked Armando/Alex as a ship, but there are tragically few fics written about them, though it's moderately popular as a background pairing in Charles/Erik fics. So this was fun! I've written a fair amount of Alex POV through the Boden's Mate 'verse, but Alex in that AU has a backstory all his own, so it's not the same, and I've never written Armando POV at all. He was a bit tricky for me, because he's a very calm, likeable character by nature, but it was hard for me to work out what his driving motivations would be. And then, y'know, I made it a Firefly fusion, which meant I had to write the entire fic in the vernacular of that 'verse, which was a special challenge of its own. I rewatched a LOT of Firefly to get that voice sorted in my head. But I really fell in love with the fusion as I was writing it, and realized as I was sketching out an outline that I had buckets of backstory for various characters that didn't fit into an Armando/Alex-centric story, plus a whole category of plot notes that I labeled "SAVE IT FOR THE SEQUEL", so, um, this is a 'verse that I will likely return to. I kind of don't care if only like three other people will be reading it. In terms of Firefly, this fic is roughly concurrent with "Serenity" and "The Train Job", about five years after Unification; the crew of Cerebro works a slightly different route than that of Serenity, so while they may have a few associates in common, they don't tend to visit the same Rim worlds or pick up the same sort of jobs, though everyone passes through Persephone at some point.

And since I really liked ALL of unveiled's prompts (seriously, if I had the time, I would have written a fic for all four of them, they were that awesome), and my head was already filled to the brim with backstory for characters who weren't Alex or Armando, this happened:

burn the land and boil the sea (5410 words) by kaydeefalls
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men (Movies), Firefly
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Erik Lehnsherr, Charles Xavier, Hank McCoy
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Crossover, First Meetings, War, Romance, Alternate Universe - Firefly Verse, Prequel
Summary: In which the Unification War begins, Erik leads the Browncoats' mutant faction, and Charles searches for something worth fighting for.

This prompt was: "Charles is a world-weary activist and advocate. Erik is the idealistic firebrand who sets his life alight." SO YEAH THAT HAPPENED. I originally thought it'd be Charles POV, at home in the Core as war was breaking out, seeing vids of this random Browncoat mutant on the Cortex and becoming increasingly intrigued, and then maybe Raven introduced them somehow? But that never really took shape in my head, and the more I thought about it, the more it became Erik's story instead. I dunno. This one was written in a rush to make the Madness deadline -- most of it in one epic late-night writing session -- and I wish I'd been able to take more time with it, but I like it anyway.

I have to finish Yuletide and then Festivids, and the final two chapters of Queen's Gambit are next up on the docket -- I'd hoped to have one done before the seasonal challenge madness set in, but alas, that was not to be, although I've made decent headway -- but after that, I'm likely going to return to this playground for a while. It's been a while since I've been this excited about a fic idea, anyway. Continuing with using lyrics from the Firefly theme as titles, because at this point I may as well accept it, I know that "take me where I cannot stand" is Charles POV of the end of the Unification War, when he and Erik finally take down Shaw but lose the war anyway. Then probably "take me out to the black" is the crew of Cerebro gradually coming together in the first year or so after the war ends. I have BUCKETS of Angel backstory -- dunno if that'll fit in there, or if she'll get her own spinoff fic that no one will read. And then I want to start overlapping with the events of Firefly and Serenity more, following up the plot threads left unresolved at the end of the Alex/Armando fic. I know for certain that in this AU fusion, River Tam is also a mutant (telepath/empath -- she can't control people like Charles, but she has a much wider range, and some precognitive abilities). The Miranda broadcast at the end of Serenity will spark off a second revolution of some kind, which Charles&co will be heavily involved in. I haven't worked out the details yet. But yeah.

I had a devil of a time getting into Clara's voice for this, and I wrote it all super last minute, but for all that, I kind of like it anyway. My recipient never responded to it, as far as I know, but from the master list, it looks like they dropped out of the fest, so possibly fandom is just not a thing that's happening for them at the moment, and I definitely understand that. I miss being able to write a lot. I know it comes and goes for me, and I'm not stressing out about it, but writer's block is sad and frustrating all the same.

On the other hand, I'm almost finished with a vid for an almost completely dead fandom, so that will be a thing! A thing that nobody but me will ever watch, to be specific. But I'm enjoying myself anyway. Hopefully I'll finish that up next week, now that this cabaret's done with and I maybe have some time to myself again. (It's a Buffy vid. A high school Buffy vid. Because that's just how my brain works, apparently, and also I've been doing a rewatch lately. I also really want to make a vidlet focused solely on "The Wish", but I can't quite find the right music for it yet. And also WTF that fandom is virtually nonexistent at this point, why am I getting all the vid bunnies now.)

Characters: Donald Scripps, David Posner, Stuart Dakin, Adil Akthar, Peter Rudge
Summary: "Right," Dakin said. "It's time we finally relieved you of the terrible burden of your virginity."

This is now my third History Boys Yuletide (though not in a row, thankfully); furthermore, Scripps/Posner continues to be my OTP to end all others in this fandom. (And speaking of which, I just learned that in 2011, Samuel Barnett and Jamie Parker did Rosencrantz & Guildenstern together on the West End, and god DAMN there's another production I need to steal a TARDIS to go back and see.) Remind me next year that no really, I'm not allowed to offer this fandom for Yuletide anymore. But repetition aside, I do love this fandom and these boys to bits, and it was lovely to revisit them again. And the prompt was specifically for Scripps's introspection on his religious beliefs and homosexuality, and reconciling the two (and the struggle therein), which was a challenge for me as a very non-spiritual person to write. And also I think I fundamentally disagree with the idea that, for Scripps, his spirituality in any way conflicts with his feelings about sexuality -- he's by far the most openly accepting of Posner in the source, and his objections to Dakin's burgeoning interest in Irwin have everything to do with the fact that Irwin's their TEACHER and not so much with the fact that they're both dudes. So I did my best to explore that from Scripps POV. Well, I enjoyed writing it, at least, though my recipient is still AWOL (and seems to have defaulted from Yuletide in general, so I feel slightly less bad about her lack of response).

Queen's Gambit, chapter 4. In which everybody learns shit they kinda wish they didn't have to know.

I really need to give a shout-out to my fucking awesome betas, also, because they are infinitely patient with this incredibly slow fic, and [livejournal.com profile] ilovetakahana is fantastic at technical nitpicks and making my sentences flow better while [personal profile] rosaw picks out all the narrative issues and character arcs, and I get the best of both worlds. Thank you both for being fabulous, always.
kaydeefalls: charles looking at erik with hearts in his eyes omg (charles/erik)
[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant authors have been revealed! Oh, man. A couple of those I totally guessed; others, I'm kind of smacking myself in the forehead for not figuring out immediately. And then, y'know, a bunch of authors I wasn't familiar with before, who now I obviously need to check out. If you like Charles/Erik and you haven't taken a look at this exchange yet, you really should. Ninety-five new fics, many excellent. Huge kudos to [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash for organizing and running the damn thing.

And now I can properly thank [livejournal.com profile] argyleheir for her excellent gift, Practical Applications of Radioactive Material. READ IT! Erik and Charles keep running into other superheroes on their recruitment trip; I particularly adore Sue Storm in this one, but really, it's all just great fun and awesomeness. ♥

Also, I wrote some stuff?

Relationships: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, N'Dare Munroe, Ororo Munroe
Summary: Not everything has to be life or death. Sometimes it snows in September, just because a little girl wills it so.

From the sign-ups, it was pretty clear that [livejournal.com profile] ginbitch and I have pretty damn similar tastes in terms of canon fics set in the 1960s; I definitely got my period research kink on writing it. The prompt was for snow, which to me, obviously meant bb!Ororo had to be in there somewhere, which wound up mostly involving her mother, N'Dare Munroe. I kept their family backstory as close to comics!canon as possible -- N'Dare was Kenyan, one of long line of priestess-sorceresses; she married an American photojournalist, and Ororo was born in Harlem. They move to Egypt when Ororo is very young. I couldn't find anything suggesting N'Dare was herself a mutant, so that bit's all mine. Also, it's kind of a love letter to New York City (my hometown), and it let me get inside Charles's enormous head way more than I've ever really thought about before. Telepathy is weird, guys. So that's that one.

Relationships: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Characters: Erik Lehnsherr, Charles Xavier, Alex Summers, Moira MacTaggert, Armando Muñoz, Angel Salvadore, Hank McCoy, Raven Darkholme
Summary: Canon!AU. "Shaw has someone very dear to me," Charles said in a low tone. "You're not the only one playing for keeps, Erik."

Pinch hit of doom! I have no fucking clue where this came from, except that I had this image in my head of Charles on the Coast Guard ship flanked by Darwin and Angel, and Erik being like, daaaaamn. But it was kind of an intense ride for me -- most of it was written frantically over the course of last weekend, as, um, you might have noticed. I'd originally intended to include flashbacks of Charles & Raven's altered backstory, but when I realized how massive the main plotline was becoming, I cut them all out. Possibly there's another fic in there; possibly there's also another fic continuing the AU version of events through the end of the movie. Possibly I should just leave it be. My main regret with this is that I didn't have the time to fully explore the changes in Charles's outlook on the world due to losing Raven so early on -- I think he'd be much more pragmatic and less optimistic about the Shaw situation, and far less scrupulous about his own use of his powers to achieve his goals. And, on the flip side, he would actually be able to understand Erik's point of view much better -- there wouldn't be such a wide chasm of miscommunication between them, which would serve both them and the team much better in the long run. I'm not sure how well any of that came across. But it was interesting to explore. (Original prompts from [livejournal.com profile] confusedkayt: badassery leading to kissing, holding one another, Erik connecting with Alex. I did manage to incorporate all three!)

So...yeah. That happened. :)

Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Dan Rydell, Casey McCall, Dana Whitaker, Natalie Hurley, Jeremy Goodwin, Kim (Sports Night), Elliot (Sports Night), Isaac Jaffe, Chris (Sports Night), Dave (Sports Night), Will (Sports Night)
Summary:

In which a network plot may or may not be afoot, interns are procuring desks for unwilling sportscasters, and inclement weather threatens the course of baseball history. So business as usual, pretty much.

I'm kind of amused that of all the fandoms I offered and requested, I managed to both write and receive the same fandom. BUT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH SPORTS NIGHT FIC OKAY. This was fun to write, although it took me a very long time to get it started because I really, really don't know much about actual sports. The only sport I both understand and enjoy watching is baseball, hence this fic, but even so, I have never done so much research for such a relatively short fic. (The MLS trivia alone, dear god.) Anyway. It's nothing special, but I made myself giggle an awful lot while writing it and my recipient enjoyed it, so that's all that matters. :D

You know what else matters? NEW SHERLOCK TONIGHT OMG. Can. Not. Wait. And I wrote many, many words for the Charles/Erik pinch hit last night, which I now need to double-check for, y'know, coherency. And then actually fucking finish it today, oh god, I really need to do that, how is the pinch-hit I'm writing in a week longer than my original assigned fic which I worked on for a month. *facepalm*
kaydeefalls: havok smirking like the cocky bastard he is (here comes trouble)
Queen's Gambit, chapter 3. In which shit blows up, literally and metaphorically.

So, that. Fun fact: I find it incredibly difficult to write Hank POV, and have no idea why. I can write him as a character through other people's POVs, but getting in his head is hard.

Now taking a breather from that 'verse to work on Secret Mutant fic, which is insisting on having, like, a proper plot and stuff. So much for 500 words of fluffy holiday fic. *facepalm* Also, Yuletide. There's a DC write-in this afternoon, and while I'm not entirely sure how that works, I'll head over anyway because I do, in fact, need to write my Yuletide fic.
kaydeefalls: drunk!raven pointing at YOU (queen's gambit)
Driveby post -- chapter 2 of Queen's Gambit is up. (XMFC/Inception fusion 'verse.)

Posting a WIP will never stop feeling weird to me. It didn't bother me quite so much on the kinkmeme, because that's just how kinkmemes work. But I feel obscurely guilty for posting this fic one chapter at a time, while I'm still in the process of writing it. My brain, IDEK.

My show is slowly driving me insane, but I don't want to talk about that. So, yes. More X-Men as dream thieves, yay! (This is my Inceptionverse!Raven icon, incidentally. She wants YOU on her team. Alex is unimpressed.)
