Obama Affirms Support for Same-Sex Marriage | Video - ABC News

President Obama announces his support of same-sex marriage. About damn time.

Perks of working for a major LGBT org: I got the heads up that this was likely happening about half an hour before the interview was even recorded. Our phones have been ringing off the hook for the past three hours, holy shit.

My mother e-mailed me with the news about twenty minutes ago, being all HAVE YOU HEARD. I'm like, seriously, mom, you think I somehow would have not heard about this by now? :P

yarrrrr

Look, ma, no SOPA/PIPA necessary.

We are the 99%.

I cannot stop reading this tumblr. It's depressing and terrifying and impossibly compelling. And it sure as hell puts my petty problems into perspective, because I have a job and health insurance and can pay rent, which definitely makes me one of the lucky ones.

Just sharing.

Mubarak has resigned.

In the words of my favorite fictional democratically elected world leader -- What's next?

(In a good way, I hope!)

Yes.

The judge has ruled. Prop 8 has been overturned in California.

The phones at work are going to be ringing off the hook tomorrow. :D

(Now for the extended legal battle and hopefully, eventually, SCOTUS. Bring it on.)

IOWA FTW.

(Now there's a statement I never expected to make. Seriously, though. Rock the fuck on.)

This picture of Obama and Rahm Emanuel is just so...oh, my gosh, it is Matt Santos and Josh Lyman, and I can't handle so much love.

OH GOD WHY AM I AWAKE.

Oh, right, because the goal is to get to the Mall by 8:30am to stand around in the cold for 4 hours because this, my friends, THIS IS SPARTA INAUGURATION.

This had so better be worth it, because I am so not a morning person.

ETA: And fail. I spent two hours trying to get anywhere near the Mall, but all the planned pedestrian security checkpoints north of the Mall were closed. And stayed closed. There were people who'd been there since 6am, told that the checkpoint at 7th and D would open at 7 -- by 9:30, nope, they just weren't going to let anyone through. The Mall is already completely packed, which confuses me -- where is the opening where the police are actually letting people through? The cops I spoke to just kept sending us around in circles from one closed checkpoint to another. Fail, DC. Epic fail.

And thus, unable to feel my toes or fingers despite thick socks and gloves, I gave up and walked home, there to watch the inauguration on TV like everyone else. Probably just as well. I just wish I had actually gotten enough sleep instead of getting up ass-early in the morning to fail to watch it in person.

ETA part 2: I spoke too soon! My housemate called me to say that in fact there was easy access down by the Lincoln Memorial, so I ran the mile and a half down 21 St to get there. INAUGURATION ACHIEVED! Possibly some pics to come shortly.

Yes, we did.

The District of Columbia went 95% for Obama. There's a party on the streets citywide. An impromptu rally struck up at 14th and U several hours ago; it's still going strong, thousands of people of every imaginable demographic thronging the intersection, chanting and dancing and shrieking. Every passing car is blaring its horn -- this has been going on since the election was called almost three hours ago, with no sign of letting up. And I'm here. And someday I'll be able to tell my grandchildren, I was there.

President Barack Hussein Obama.

It's a beautiful day.

I am seriously in imminent danger of losing my shit here. SO SOON WE WILL KNOW THINGS. SO SOON.

At least I called in sick to work today and phonebanked for five hours instead.

Back from the Obama rally -- his final rally before the election. I...don't have the words. That was amazing. They told us we were about 100,000 strong, standing in a vast, misty field in the middle of Virginia, straining on tiptoe to see the figure at the podium, his voice over the speakers rolling across us in waves...wow. And afterwards, heading back the two mile to where we'd parked the car in the median of the interstate, thousands of people walking together along the empty highway in the midnight darkness, the thick mist through the trees like something off a film set, this surreal experience shared with literally thousands of others...

I don't have the words.

Yes, we can. Yes, we will.

Okay, I have no idea what this memorial dinner thing was about, but it's apparently the Barack Obama Comedy Hour or something, and it is AMAZING:

"My greatest weakness: I'm a little too awesome."

Whoever wrote him that script wins at life.

(Sorry, this LJ is turning into all politics, all the time, innit? I promise there will be fic or something soon.)

...srsly?

Chicago Tribune endorses Barack Obama for President.

Now, I realize that some of you may see "Chicago" and "Obama" and think, well, OBVIOUSLY, but no. The Trib is one of the most staunchly Republican papers in the country. They have never -- literally, NEVER -- endorsed the Democratic nominee for President. Not once in the long history of the newspaper.

Dude.

I have such a crush on Obama, it is kind of ridiculous.

This has to happen. This HAS to happen. Oh my goodness. And I live in DC, bet your fucking ass I will be at that inauguration, bitches. My only regret is that DC is the last place any presidential candidate in the history of ever even sort of slightly ponders campaigning.

Also? Um, wtf?

Yeah. That was weird.

seriously.

I feel that it doesn't even need saying at this point, but here.

I sent in my voter registration form (or...re-registration? change of registration? anyway, the DC version) over a week ago. I'm wondering if I should maybe call and see if they got it.

Also, Sarah Palin makes my head hurt.

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun.

How about the classic Brown v. Board of Education, which desegregated schools? I mean, that's a fairly obvious one. And, by extension, Plessy v. Ferguson, which Brown overturned (ye olde "separate but equal" argument of great bullshittasticness). Going back a little further in African-American history, we have the Dred Scott case (Dred Scott v. Sandford, which I did have to look up because I don't think the "v. Sandford" part was ever mentioned in my history classes), which was another royally crap decision by a royally racist Supreme Court. Um, I'm not sure what it says about me that these are the three cases that come to my mind first.

But seriously, Palin, how could you not name a single case other than Roe? COME ON.

Today I spent a few hours canvassing in Virginia for Barack Obama and Mark Warner. I've never done anything for any sort of political campaign before in my life, and I get really nervous about striking up conversations for strangers, so I'm doubly proud of myself now.

I mean, it wasn't much, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? And every little helps. I have to believe that. That's what's brought Obama so far already. I don't have the money to donate, but if I have the time, I'll give it. And now that I've gotten over the First Time hurdle, it'll be easier. That was kinda fun! Except for the one belligerent Republican. He was not so fun. Ah, well.
