While some of the most recent Doctor Who episodes haven't really done it for me, I'm seeing a lot of meh in the fandom regarding Clara, and that just won't do. Because Clara Oswin Oswald is pretty great. And I believe the only way to properly welcome a new companion is with a vid. Obviously.

For the record, this song has always been a Doctor Who vid waiting to happen for me. First it was gonna be a Doctor/Rose vid, then an Amy/Rory/Doctor vid, but in the end, I'm glad I waited for Clara for this one.

So in addition to working my way through the WIP fic of doom, I've also been trying to slog through my vidding WIP folder of late. I've blathered a bit about the Ponds vid. That's still in progress. But I did finally finish up a Hunger Games vid that I've been storyboarding since, oh, five seconds after seeing the movie for the first time.

Caesar Flickerman makes a few more jokes, and then it's time for the show. This will last exactly three hours and is required viewing for all of Panem. As the lights dim and the seal appears on the screen, I realize I'm unprepared for this. I do not want to watch my twenty-two fellow tributes die. I saw enough of them die the first time. My heart starts pounding and I have a strong impulse to run. How have the other victors faced this alone? During the highlights, they periodically show the winner's reaction up on a box in the corner of the screen. I think back to earlier years. some are triumphant, pumping their fists in the air, beating their chests. Most just seem stunned. All I know is that the only thing keeping me on this love seat is Peeta - his arm around my shoulder, his other hand claimed by both of mine. Of course, the previous victors didn't have the Capitol looking for a way to destroy them.

Condensing several weeks into three hours is quite a feat, especially when you consider how many cameras were going at once. Whoever puts together the highlights has to choose what sort of story to tell. This year, for the first time, they tell a love story. I know Peeta and I won, but a disproportionate amount of time is spent on us, right from the beginning. I'm glad though, because it supports the whole crazy-in-love thing that's my defense for defying the Capitol, plus it means we won't have as much time to linger over the deaths.

I'm not gonna lie, I have planned to make a Korra vid to this song since the existence of the series was announced. Not a single episode of LoK existed, and I already knew I would vid this song about Korra and Aang and the Avatar line and how fucking pressuring and confusing being the Avatar is, and how they both suffer and learn from past lives' mistakes. And then the series actually aired, and the song continued to obviously be completely about Korra. Ugh, the lyrics are just too perfect to pass up -- "then you had to bring up reincarnation over a couple of beers the other night / and now I'm serving time for mistakes made by another in another lifetime", or "but then again it feels like some sort of inspiration to let the next life off the hook / but she'll say look what I had to overcome from my last life, I think I'll write a book."

So, I'm super glad that

kouredios requested a Korra introspection/aangst vid, because it was exactly the excuse I needed to actually make this thing. :D

As I was clipping, I noticed all kinds of AWESOME parallels between the Gaang and Korra's Team Avatar that I badly wanted to include, but it started getting too bloated and disjointed, so for this particular story, I stuck with Korra and Aang. Someday I will find the right vid to tell the story of the parallels between Zuko and Asami, for damn sure, and also all the rest of them. (I feel like Asami's true inheritance is from Sokka and Suki's line of nonbender genius, but goddamn, she and Zuko have an awful lot in common. Another time.)

It took me a long time to settle on a song for this vid. I had really wanted to find a quiet arrangement of "Bye Bye Blackbird", actually, like the version sung in the film History Boys, but hours and hours of hunting provided me with nothing that felt right (every cover I could find was either way too jazzy or way too slow). So I trawled through my iTunes library for something else, and, well, I do tend to default to Vienna Teng. I've seen a couple of vids to this song before --

such_heights did a fabulous Amy Pond vid to it, and it turned up on Festivids a few years back as well -- which made me wary, because I don't like retreading ground others have covered better. But it just WORKED so well for Ofelia, with Mercedes' lullaby, and brought out the darker undertones of the song in ways that kind of gave me chills just imagining it. (The wind makes creatures of our trees / and the branches to hands / they're not real, understand, except, of course, for Ofelia, they ARE real, UGH MY HEART.) So, yes. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, in the end.

And Quinn was SUPER HELPFUL listening to me blather about it and pointing out things that weren't quite clear or working in the first draft, so thank you, again!

In between driving actors to the airport and packing up all my shit and moving out of Colorado, I somehow made one of those crazy 48-hour turnaround vids. O_O I'm uploading this from my aunt's house in Denver, and now I shall begin yet another long cross-country drive, to New York. At some point after that I'll finish the other Avengers vid I started in the past couple of days (which is all about the ladies, to counteract the massive amounts of testosterone and manpain produced by THIS vidbunny).

Apparently I'm doing spring cleaning on my vidding WIP folder! Basically, I spent all of last night editing together a soundtrack for the Hunger Games vid I'm itching to make, and then tonight I channeled my frustrations at the lack of accessible HG source into finishing off a Doctor Who vid that I hadn't touched in over a year. This one is nothing special, but it's been sitting unfinished and taunting me for about two years now, so here we go. (Seriously, I started it around the end of Doctor Who series five.)

I originally meant this as a sort of companion piece (ha!) to Book of Days, which was all about the kickass ladies of Doctor Who. So this one's in honor of the many dorky boyfriends of Rose, Martha, and Amy. ♥ I cut myself off at the end of S5, because that's where my headspace was when I'd started it, and because it's almost unfair how much more awesome footage there is of Rory than of the other guys once S6 is taken into account. (Sure, Jack got his own show, but he's only in a handful of actual DW episodes; Mickey lasted for the entirety of RTD's tenure, but only sporadically. Rory has a distinct advantage at this point.) One-off boyfriends include Adam ("Dalek" and "Long Game"), Riley ("42"), and Tom ("Last of the Time Lords").

This wasn't the prompt I matched on for

terajk, but after spending a fair amount of time and frustration bashing my head against a wall of fail while I tried to write a post-war Mai & Ty Lee & Gaang fic, I went back and looked at the other two prompts, and, well. I have a lot of trouble finding the characters' voices in fic, but it's very easy for me to connect with the show on a visual level, and there are just so many fascinating parallels to explore between Toph and Azula. I knew I wanted to use this song from the start, though I flicked through a couple of other Björk songs at first just to be sure; her voice and music is just so eerie and childlike and beautifully strange, which I think suits Azula in particular very well. I do think this vid wound up skewing a bit too far toward Azula over Toph, but still, it was fun to make. And now I do kinda want to read fic about the two of them interacting postwar.

In other news, one more week on this show, and then another break for about a month. And I'm slowly but surely chipping away at the next chapter of Queen's Gambit. (HI ARIADNE HI.) I can't believe I let myself go more than two months between updates, ugh, this is why I should never be allowed to post WIPs. BUT IT'S COMING I SWEAR. Even if I still kinda want to just skip this chapter and go straight to the job instead, argh.

Nothing says Monday like starting off with a generically angry caller screaming at me for five minutes straight. Memo to anyone who ever intends to call any organization about any issue: I am absolutely willing to go into this conversation under the assumption that you have a legitimate issue/complaint/need that we can help you address. But ranting at the receptionist for five solid minutes without letting them get a word in edgewise and demanding to know WHAT WILL YOU PEOPLE DO ABOUT THIS but refusing to allow them to transfer you to someone who actually works in a department with any relevancy to your area of complaint? Yeah, not the best way to get your problem addressed. And screaming at the receptionist right off the bat is also not a good way to make me WANT to help you. Just a thought.

And this is why we have caller ID and a harassment line set up on our phone systems.

In case you hadn't noticed, I ♥ X-Men these days. Which kind of makes this the longest I've ever been actively involved in one fandom, since I got hooked on X2 when it came out eight years ago. Um, unless you count the bit after X3 where my interest DIED because X3 sucked so much and there were only so many desperate post-X3 sort-of-fix-it fics I could write. (Three, to be specific.)

That's the only excuse I can give for this vid, really. I just love this universe SO MUCH, except for the parts I pretend didn't happen. Like the beach divorce. Or X-Men 3. Or the boring bits of Wolverine. BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL STILL AWESOME OKAY.

Unexpected lack of daytime rehearsal today is unexpected! Time to do some housekeeping. By which I mean post a vid.

I realize that it may appear that I am being absurdly productive when it comes to vidding these days. Which, okay, having finished my Buffyverse watching, needs must lead me to other activities in my spare time. But I'm also mainly just going through my backlog of half-completed vids and actually, y'know, completing them. This one I started back in December or thereabouts, but it took the new season of Who and PONDS ON MY TEEVEE, ALL OF THE HEARTS FOREVER to reignite my interest in it.

And returns me to my endless love affair with vidding Vienna Teng. Never let it be said I am not completely predictable in every way.

So, this. I suppose it's yet another vid about Joss Whedon's broken dolls attempting to reclaim their feminist narratives.

Basically, while watching Buffy for the first time ever, I started to notice some...really, really obvious parallels. That everyone else was already well aware of, but hey, I'm new here. And I thought I might want to do a vid about all these "chosen" women, and how deeply fucked up that made them, but how hard they worked to reclaim their own identities and kick ass on their own terms. And I've done a couple of vids to Tom McRae songs, and his music had the right sort of tone for the vid I wanted to do. So I'd just downloaded several of his albums that I'd never previously heard, and I glanced through the song titles, and this one just JUMPED out at me. So I listened to it. And, wow, yes.

This one was tricky because the source is all about the words, and talky face is DOOM in vids. But I tried! I also experimented with incorporating dialogue from the source for the first time, which was fun, and I futzed with video effects probably more than I should have. It took me a while to settle on a song for this one -- I knew going in that I wanted to use Rufus Wainwright, but finding the right one took time. (It was going to be "Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk" for a while, but I got frustrated at how slow the beat on that was.) Overall, though, I'm rather fond of this, and I very much hope Avendya enjoyed her gift!

But one festivid was clearly not enough, so then I picked up a pinch hit.

SO. Every now and then, I make something that is sort of someone else's fault. Sometimes they are well aware of this (

tricksterquinn), sometimes it is completely unintentional and they don't realize it at all. This one is partly Quinn's fault, because she came out of Inception basically going OMG ARIADNE SQUEE. But it is also partly

newredshoes's fault, though she doesn't know it, because guys, I don't listen to Tori Amos. Nothing wrong with her music at all, it's just not my usual. There is only one Tori Amos song on my iTunes, and it is this one, and I only have it because lo these many years ago, Esther put it on a mix CD for a college show we both worked on.

I'm glad she did.
