kaydeefalls: tosh has a geekgasm (geek out)
SO. I don't think I've mentioned it much here, but in the past year I've become very active with a large social group called the Gay Geeks of NY (like, I'm on their board now and it's eating up ALL OF MY FREE TIME but in a good way, that's how active). We host geek-themed events on an absurdly regular basis, and in particular, we hold GEEK TRIVIA once a month. WHICH IS AWESOME FUN. Sci-fi, fantasy, comics, gaming, horror, anime -- all brands of geekdom are well represented. And this month, I'm the one running the damn thing, along with a friend of mine. And I thought it would be even more awesome if a few of my online fandom friends also showed up. Because I wrote more than half of the questions, and we're devoting an entire category to fandom itself.

HERE'S THE INFO.

Gay Geeks of NY GEEK TRIVIA
This Sunday, April 13, from 5:30-8:30pm
@ the LGBT Center (208 W 13th St, Manhattan)

ALL ARE WELCOME, assuming you're in the NYC area and can physically get here. LGBTQ + straight allies (seriously, you don't have to be queer-identified in any way to participate). It's four rounds of geeky trivia of increasing difficulty on a wide range of fandoms, from Captain America to Narnia to Final Fantasy to Star Trek and beyond, and you know I've made sure my favorite fandoms are all represented somehow. For this month, we're randomizing the teams, so everyone's going to be meeting new people. And honestly, while I love this group dearly, it's still very dude-heavy, so I'd love a bit more female representation among the ranks. :) The cost is a grand total of $5 (which just covers our expenses hosting the event, it's not for profit). There are always a stupid amount of unhealthy snacks, and probably everyone present will be geeking out over the Winter Soldier movie between rounds. Come on by! Bring a friend! Bring lots of friends! And we always go out drinking at a nearby bar afterwards.

The link above directs you to the facebook event page -- feel free to join up and invite anyone you like. It's my first time hosting the trivia, so I'm a bit nervous. And I feel like I've spent the past few weeks doing nothing but writing trivia questions. Come and curse my name! Or rejoice because we share all the same fandoms and you wind up winning the grand prize! :D

My DW/LJ fen, I turn to you. My flatmate of 2+ years is abandoning me to move in with her boyfriend. This is very awesome for her, and very sad for me, because we were great roommates, and now I have to find someone new to live with. At first I thought craigslist was my only hope, but then I thought, wait! Why must I throw myself upon the mercy of skeevy strangers, when there is a whole marvelous community of fannish types who might know someone nifty in need of a place to live in the DC metro area?

SO.

I'm looking for a fan-friendly female (or female-identified) flatmate to share my comfy two bedroom/1 bathroom apartment in Arlington starting on or around Dec 1. more info/pics here! )

So...yes. Any signal boosting would be very much appreciated, you can link them here (DW or LJ) or contact me at kaydeefalls at gmail dot com. Fandom is awesome, and it would be really nifty if I could find a fannish flatmate rather than, y'know, posting this up on craigslist and risking total sketchballs.

Science fiction FTW: Kepler Spacecraft Will Search Cosmos for Earth-like Planets. (NY Times)

"In my 25 years of working with NASA this is the most exciting mission I’ve worked on," said Dr. Fanson, who will step down as project manager after the launching. "We are going to be able to answer for the first time a question that has been pondered since the time of the ancient Greeks. Are there other worlds like ours? The question has come down to us from 100 generations. We get to answer it. I find that tremendously exciting."

When a reporter departed from journalistic objectivity to venture a hope that other Earths are out there, Dr. Fanson happily joined in. "I hope the answer is yes," he said. "I hope the universe is teeming with planets like Earth."

How cool is that, seriously?

The twenty-first century is when everything changes, and you've got to be ready. /torchwood

This picture of Obama and Rahm Emanuel is just so...oh, my gosh, it is Matt Santos and Josh Lyman, and I can't handle so much love.

HA.

Dude, I knew I knew that guy! There's a bit part in Across the Universe -- and I mean barely a step up from extra -- Sadie's pianist. He's the guy she's hanging out with when Jojo auditions for them, he turns up in every scene with her performing with her band, and from pretty much the first time I saw the movie, I thought, man, he looks like a guy I knew in high school. Finally tonight I eyeballed the credits very, very carefully, and indeed, he IS that guy from my high school. That amuses me a lot more than it should.

So today one of my roommates in a hostel in Riomaggiore is a New Zealand girl. Got to talking about LotR (like you do), she mentioned that her cousin had a small part in those movies.

Her: "He was, like, the elf king, or something. You know, Cate Blanchett was the queen, and he was her king."

Me: "...your cousin is Marton Csokas?"

Her: "Wow, I can't believe you know who he is, no one's heard of him."

Me: "..."

I managed to refrain from informing her that, in fact, I knew several people who rather enjoyed writing stories featuring her cousin and his friends having kinky gay sex.

I love this vacation.

WHAT.

Okay, I totally had a brain fart and forgot the Tony Awards were tonight. My bad. Not that I have a TV to watch them on anyway. But that's besides the point, the point being HOLY SHIT LIN IS NOW IN POSSESSION OF MULTIPLE TONYS.

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA IS A TONY-WINNER.

I KNEW THAT KID IN HIGH SCHOOL WTF.

Seriously, this is mind-bogglingly awesome. Lin! Has won Tonys! When I started high school, he was a senior. He was crazy popular and directed the school musical and had half the school in love with him, and I totally idolized him. Then when I was a senior myself, he was back as the new English/drama teacher, and he totally made my day by remembering me from when I was a wee thing (seriously, I was so excited about this, it was ridiculous), and then he was my faculty adviser on the first play I ever directed. And now he has won Tony Awards. Two of them. I just...oh, my god. This is unreal. He is living my dream.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (so sleepy)
I hate insomnia. Hate hate hate. Especially after a long-ass exhausting and fairly active day, when I fall into bed pretty much as soon as I get home and then cannot fucking sleep. Two hours later, still awake. Goddamnit.

I did have the pleasure of going to breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] airgiodslv, which was delightful albeit brief (she had to get back on the road by 10am). But considering that this woke me up several hours earlier than usual, followed by a brief nap, then running around all day (selling Chinese buns to raise money for Midsummer, class, work, a cappella rehearsal, Midsummer dress rehearsal, no there was no break in there at all, which brings us to nearly 11pm) -- I SHOULD NOT BE UNABLE TO FALL ASLEEP NOW. I should be pleasantly all tuckered out and fall swiftly and enjoyably into the deep dreamless sleep of the well and truly exhausted. But no.

Ugh. Just ugh. So now I'll be tired all day tomorrow, too. Joy.

Seriously, why doesn't the human brain come with an off switch?

It's so foggy right now. The whole city is just shrouded in mist. I love it.

And I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] willtoburn today! She's so lovely and engaging and wee. *grins* And shall be hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes later tonight, yes. My weekend is working out after all.

In other news, I see that DVD-style fic commentary meme is doing the rounds again. I've never done it, but if anyone's interested in me doing commentary on any of my fics, I'd be interested in giving it a try. All my fics can be found either on my site or in my LJ memories, here.

[livejournal.com profile] airgiodslv, I got your card today! Thank you!

I didn't add my address to anyone's card-sending posts this year, because I knew that I wouldn't be sending out any cards of my own, but I should've known you'd send me one anyway. :)

[livejournal.com profile] airgiodslv was here on Sunday/Monday, and she is all kinds of awesome, as would generally be suggested by knowing her on LJ but is marvelously reinforced by wandering about with her in person.

Just so's you all know. :)

[livejournal.com profile] newredshoes! I HAVE DISCOVERED THE MOST AMAZING THING IN DUBLIN.

RESTAURANT OTP OMG.

Erm, I've been wandering around taking pictures of the things in Dublin what I actually like. I've got a couple more places to hit up tomorrow, and then I shall probably post, because I can. But this just couldn't wait. OMG.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (watchin' all the guys go by)
Oh, man. I totally pwnz0red that last paragraph. I have the proper academic jargon down to an ART FORM, my friends. Maybe this essay won't be so bad after all.

And I really love the fact that this entire essay is essentially going to be thinly veiled squee along the lines of OMG IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GAY. Except, you know. Restrained and academic-like.
kaydeefalls: The Last Unicorn by Samantha Darko (i write the bestest stories)
So! Yes. I was responsible for Faintly Falling, a Remus/Sirius what is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] kenazfiction's Neither Sign Nor Symbol. The original is better. Go forth and check it out.

And [livejournal.com profile] penknife wrote a most splendiferous remix of my fic 'Can't Run But', which is probably better than mine, which looks at both Regulus and Draco from Snape's POV and actually tells the story in a linear fashion, making my love of flashbacks look rather silly. Read it! It's here.

In other news, I met up with [livejournal.com profile] siochan on Saturday, who is most lovely, even if she is a Viggorli shipper. :P We watched a truly insane amount of QAF US and wandered about and saw Inside Man. See it, it's a lot of fun, although I was hoping for a bit more of a twist at the end. And at soem point we hung out with [livejournal.com profile] smittenrosebud for a bit as well. I should meet up with my LJ friends more often, they're much more fun than normal people.

Oy. I should be writing my essay. And yet.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (watchin' all the guys go by)
All right, I know I've got a few Queer Theory scholars on my flist. I'm trying to write an essay on the construction of homosexual identity in a couple of plays for one of my courses, and I need your help. What are considered to be the foundational texts of Queer Theory (or whatever the proper term for it is)? I could just dive into the field on my own, but I'm a Theater major, and I don't think I'd know where to start. I've had a reasonably solid education in the social sciences, but not this particular branch. Any suggestions?

And along similar lines, I know there are other theater people out there. Go forth and read a play or two by Frank McGuinness, if you haven't already. All of his plays have at least one strong gay character, without the plays themselves being "gay plays". It's so lovely, really, to read something where being gay is just a part of the many things that make up a character, without either needing to be the primary focus of the work or reducing itself to a secondary and oversimplified role of comic relief. I'm a particular fan of McGuinness's "Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme", which is a beautiful exercise in slashtastic subtext, among other things.

Craig: Well, you're a rare buckcat anyroad.
Pyper: Funny word that.
Craig: Buckcat? It's a--
Pyper: No. Rare. Are you rare, David?
Craig: When I want to be. Army's no place for rareness though.
Pyper: Why not? It takes all sorts to make an army.

Oh, <3 .

oscar noms

kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (do we all have our thinking caps?)
Huh. The Oscar nominations are very...interesting this year. I dunno, I was surprised by a few of them. Like Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actor. I mean, I LOVE me some Jake, but I really didn't expect that. Interesting.

Okay, now you all need to help me, because I haven't missed watching the Oscars since I was, like, ten, and the thought that I'll probably miss them this year makes me INCREDIBLY SAD. Like, I wouldn't have minded missing last year's, which were boring and I hadn't seen more than two or three of the major films and hadn't liked any of them much anyway. But this year, there's Brokeback Mountain and Capote and other coolness up for multiple awards, and I WANNA SEE. But I'm in Ireland. And I have no TV. Does anyone know if there's some sort of live internet feed, or something, so that I can get my Oscar fix? I don't just want to read a list of the winners; I want to WATCH the damn things, and make fun of people's outfits, and be amused by Jon Stewart's monologues, and all that jazz.

For those of you who might not have heard, Kia ([livejournal.com profile] punkmeanscuddle) passed away last night. One of her friends posted about it in a locked post a few hours ago.

I can't say I was all that close to her, but she was one of my first friends on LJ three years ago, and now I wish I'd gotten the chance to know her better. She will be sorely missed.

I just. There are no words.

Finally actually ran into [livejournal.com profile] brandybuck. It obviously works better when I try to do it on purpose, rather than just wandering around campus and assuming I'll recognize her if I pass her, which does NOT work particularly well.

It's nice knowing that there's someone in the same general area who is interested in short creatures with big hairy feet having gay sex. Er. Yeah. And mutants, too.

Right, on to the unexpected Kafka paper of mild doom.

I met [livejournal.com profile] msilverstar today and you didn't. Neener. *grins* She's a lovely person, and we talked many things slash (even when strange French-speaking man sat down at our table!), and it was good. And her three-year-old is ADORABLE. Yay!

In other news, that Two Lines challenge? Can I just, like, post a story I've already written which manages to fit my lyrics perfectly? Because I feel silly writing essentially the same sort of fic all over again. Bah. (I like the lyrics, it's just that I already wrote a fic like that, and I hate repeating myself.) Or, failing repost, anyone wanna suggest a pairing? I need somewhere to start this thing.

Haven't seen roomie all day. It's like having a single. Meh. Whatever.

I feel ridiculous going to bed before midnight, but I'm actually that bored right now...

Second of all, 'tis [livejournal.com profile] wolfsage's birthday. And so...

Summary: Series of drabbles. Will knows nothing about boats.

Okay, so there were only two and a half people there (Kim counts as a half because she had to leave halfway through), but still! [livejournal.com profile] reishin is an extremely cool person who has EXCELLENT taste in books. Very good for spending an hour or so in Barnes & Noble with. And lo, though our toes froze off, and though the wind was friggin' freezing, we did speak slashily and long, and ate chicken noodle soup, and sniffed mango-scented lip balm, and wondered which lost tourists were or were not slashers. And such. [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida was not allowed into the city for some reason involving subways and cabs and parents, but fear not! For it shall happen again. ::nods firmly::

French quizzes to finish grading, then off to bed. No, seriously. Need more than five hours of sleep for once.
