I think it is because (and Gabe, take note) that "large" is an innately funny adjective by sole virtue of its low frequency...ordinarily, a word such as "big" or "huge" or "ginormous" would be used in the place of "large," but here "large" is used to great effect as an understated modifier, implying that the monkey is large and that this is not terribly exciting. Somehow, that's funny.
