According to his profile in Forbes Magazine, Erik Lehnsherr is a "visionary polymath engineer with strong strategic goals and reputation for being simultaneously difficult to work with and highly respected by his employees; however, potential investors are often put off by his extremist views on mutant rights, which gave MagneTech a rocky opening on the markets after going public in 2015."

According to Charles's sister, after listening to him rant about his boss Erik for twenty solid minutes: "Oh, my god, you want to bone him so bad."

(Erik is a high-powered CEO. Charles is his long-suffering PA. Tony Stark is shaking up their industry. It all goes about as well as you might expect.)

Posting chapter by chapter was an interesting experiment! I doubt I'll do that again -- and normally wouldn't, except that the structure of this particular murder mystery fic did lend itself well to a more serialized posting format -- but it was fun to try.

Now that I'm actually back in the habit of writing regularly, it's been weird to come to a stop. I've got another random fusion AU I'm starting to tinker around with, because I may as well embrace the fact that my inner fangirl is now stuck in X-Men fandom circa 2012/13 and has no particular interest in moving on. At least I'm entertaining myself, right?

So as you may have guessed, while I did not sign up for Secret Mutant this year, I did pick up a pinch hit. Which I wrote most of in one frantic all-night session and then finished up the next day, and huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash for the last-minute beta on top of her writing three pinch hits of her own AND, y'know, running the entire exchange.

I didn't try to make a guessing game out of it this year, but this one was mine:

XMFC/Inception fusion, sequel to Boden's Mate. Raven's running her own extractions these days, but the job S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dumped in her lap is a real shitshow. Two marks, two simultaneous dreams, eleven dreamers, and a hell of a lot of baggage. Time to call in a few favors -- and did she mention the job involves inception?

I seem to have forgotten how to, y'know, journal. So. Um. Hello. I'm still alive. I just haven't had anything in particular to say, and then the longer I don't post...it snowballs. Not unlike the polar vortex. I'm really sick of winter.

So instead of coming up with incredibly mundane things to say about my life -- Look! A new chapter of Queen's Gambit! Because you know what's more interesting than my life? Limbo.

At least, I hope so.

ONE. CHAPTER. LEFT. Christ.
kaydeefalls: drunk!raven pointing at YOU (queen's gambit)
My Yuletide fic continues to be more or less nonexistent, with less than 36 hours to deadline, so that's a thing. But in the meantime, Secret Mutant fics have been revealed! I haven't been posting about this at all, because me and the free time this week haven't been very mixy, and I haven't read very many of the fics yet so I can't do a rec post -- um, not that I ever do rec posts, I suck -- but I did get the most fantastic gift EVER: Xmas in Connecticut, by the incomparable Yahtzee. It's already been recced all over the place, for good reason, but guys, it's REALLY REALLY GOOD. Charles/Erik on the homefront in WWII, Raven being SPECTACULAR, and very sweet background Raven/Hank. READ IT. LOVE IT.

So then I wrote a thing. Or, well, two things, one for the exchange proper and one for Secret Mutant Madness. But both in the same 'verse. I feel like these are very obviously my fics, but because the main fic focused on an unpopular ship, not many people read them or would know to link them to me. ANYWAY.

Summary: In which the crew of Cerebro picks up a passenger on a border moon, Emma has a lead on an anti-mutant conspiracy, and Armando might be getting more than he bargained for. (Fusion with the Firefly 'verse.)

My recipient, unveiled, prompted: "Darwin and Havok IN SPACE!" -- which, for me, obviously meant a Firefly fusion, because there is nothing in the world I enjoy more than crossovers with Firefly. Plus, I've always liked Armando/Alex as a ship, but there are tragically few fics written about them, though it's moderately popular as a background pairing in Charles/Erik fics. So this was fun! I've written a fair amount of Alex POV through the Boden's Mate 'verse, but Alex in that AU has a backstory all his own, so it's not the same, and I've never written Armando POV at all. He was a bit tricky for me, because he's a very calm, likeable character by nature, but it was hard for me to work out what his driving motivations would be. And then, y'know, I made it a Firefly fusion, which meant I had to write the entire fic in the vernacular of that 'verse, which was a special challenge of its own. I rewatched a LOT of Firefly to get that voice sorted in my head. But I really fell in love with the fusion as I was writing it, and realized as I was sketching out an outline that I had buckets of backstory for various characters that didn't fit into an Armando/Alex-centric story, plus a whole category of plot notes that I labeled "SAVE IT FOR THE SEQUEL", so, um, this is a 'verse that I will likely return to. I kind of don't care if only like three other people will be reading it. In terms of Firefly, this fic is roughly concurrent with "Serenity" and "The Train Job", about five years after Unification; the crew of Cerebro works a slightly different route than that of Serenity, so while they may have a few associates in common, they don't tend to visit the same Rim worlds or pick up the same sort of jobs, though everyone passes through Persephone at some point.

And since I really liked ALL of unveiled's prompts (seriously, if I had the time, I would have written a fic for all four of them, they were that awesome), and my head was already filled to the brim with backstory for characters who weren't Alex or Armando, this happened:

burn the land and boil the sea (5410 words) by kaydeefalls

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Crossover, First Meetings, War, Romance, Alternate Universe - Firefly Verse, Prequel
Summary: In which the Unification War begins, Erik leads the Browncoats' mutant faction, and Charles searches for something worth fighting for.

This prompt was: "Charles is a world-weary activist and advocate. Erik is the idealistic firebrand who sets his life alight." SO YEAH THAT HAPPENED. I originally thought it'd be Charles POV, at home in the Core as war was breaking out, seeing vids of this random Browncoat mutant on the Cortex and becoming increasingly intrigued, and then maybe Raven introduced them somehow? But that never really took shape in my head, and the more I thought about it, the more it became Erik's story instead. I dunno. This one was written in a rush to make the Madness deadline -- most of it in one epic late-night writing session -- and I wish I'd been able to take more time with it, but I like it anyway.

I have to finish Yuletide and then Festivids, and the final two chapters of Queen's Gambit are next up on the docket -- I'd hoped to have one done before the seasonal challenge madness set in, but alas, that was not to be, although I've made decent headway -- but after that, I'm likely going to return to this playground for a while. It's been a while since I've been this excited about a fic idea, anyway. Continuing with using lyrics from the Firefly theme as titles, because at this point I may as well accept it, I know that "take me where I cannot stand" is Charles POV of the end of the Unification War, when he and Erik finally take down Shaw but lose the war anyway. Then probably "take me out to the black" is the crew of Cerebro gradually coming together in the first year or so after the war ends. I have BUCKETS of Angel backstory -- dunno if that'll fit in there, or if she'll get her own spinoff fic that no one will read. And then I want to start overlapping with the events of Firefly and Serenity more, following up the plot threads left unresolved at the end of the Alex/Armando fic. I know for certain that in this AU fusion, River Tam is also a mutant (telepath/empath -- she can't control people like Charles, but she has a much wider range, and some precognitive abilities). The Miranda broadcast at the end of Serenity will spark off a second revolution of some kind, which Charles&co will be heavily involved in. I haven't worked out the details yet. But yeah.

Queen's Gambit, chapter 7: In which the inception of Colonel William Stryker goes about as smoothly as you might expect.

This actually contains the scene that I wrote this entire fic around, incidentally. If nothing else, it made me very happy to write it.

Two chapters to go on this one, and that'll be a HUGE weight off. This 'verse has been hanging over my head for going on two years now; it's time to lay it to rest.

Speaking of endings, closed a show today. THANK GOD. It was a good show, but was accompanied by more than the usual amount of offstage drama and stress, so I'm very ready to move on to the next one.

Secret Mutant reveal has happened! So now I can 'fess up at last. Both of these fics drew heavily from personal experience, so fair warning, I'm about to blather on a bit.

First up, my original assignment:

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant authors have been revealed! Oh, man. A couple of those I totally guessed; others, I'm kind of smacking myself in the forehead for not figuring out immediately. From the sign-ups, it was pretty clear that [livejournal.com profile] ginbitch and I have pretty damn similar tastes in terms of canon fics set in the 1960s; I definitely got my period research kink on writing it. The prompt was for snow, which to me, obviously meant bb!Ororo had to be in there somewhere, which wound up mostly involving her mother, N'Dare Munroe. I kept their family backstory as close to comics!canon as possible -- N'Dare was Kenyan, one of long line of priestess-sorceresses; she married an American photojournalist, and Ororo was born in Harlem. They move to Egypt when Ororo is very young. I couldn't find anything suggesting N'Dare was herself a mutant, so that bit's all mine. Also, it's kind of a love letter to New York City (my hometown), and it let me get inside Charles's enormous head way more than I've ever really thought about before. Telepathy is weird, guys. So that's that one.

Summary: Canon!AU. "Shaw has someone very dear to me," Charles said in a low tone. "You're not the only one playing for keeps, Erik."

Pinch hit of doom! I have no fucking clue where this came from, except that I had this image in my head of Charles on the Coast Guard ship flanked by Darwin and Angel, and Erik being like, daaaaamn. But it was kind of an intense ride for me -- most of it was written frantically over the course of last weekend, as, um, you might have noticed. I'd originally intended to include flashbacks of Charles & Raven's altered backstory, but when I realized how massive the main plotline was becoming, I cut them all out. Possibly there's another fic in there; possibly there's also another fic continuing the AU version of events through the end of the movie. Possibly I should just leave it be. My main regret with this is that I didn't have the time to fully explore the changes in Charles's outlook on the world due to losing Raven so early on -- I think he'd be much more pragmatic and less optimistic about the Shaw situation, and far less scrupulous about his own use of his powers to achieve his goals. And, on the flip side, he would actually be able to understand Erik's point of view much better -- there wouldn't be such a wide chasm of miscommunication between them, which would serve both them and the team much better in the long run. I'm not sure how well any of that came across. But it was interesting to explore. (Original prompts from [livejournal.com profile] confusedkayt: badassery leading to kissing, holding one another, Erik connecting with Alex. I did manage to incorporate all three!)

So...yeah. That happened. :)
kaydeefalls: havok smirking like the cocky bastard he is (here comes trouble)
Queen's Gambit, chapter 3. In which shit blows up, literally and metaphorically.

So, that. Fun fact: I find it incredibly difficult to write Hank POV, and have no idea why. I can write him as a character through other people's POVs, but getting in his head is hard.

Now taking a breather from that 'verse to work on Secret Mutant fic, which is insisting on having, like, a proper plot and stuff. So much for 500 words of fluffy holiday fic. *facepalm* Also, Yuletide. There's a DC write-in this afternoon, and while I'm not entirely sure how that works, I'll head over anyway because I do, in fact, need to write my Yuletide fic.
kaydeefalls: drunk!raven pointing at YOU (queen's gambit)
Driveby post -- chapter 2 of Queen's Gambit is up. (XMFC/Inception fusion 'verse.)

Posting a WIP will never stop feeling weird to me. It didn't bother me quite so much on the kinkmeme, because that's just how kinkmemes work. But I feel obscurely guilty for posting this fic one chapter at a time, while I'm still in the process of writing it. My brain, IDEK.

My show is slowly driving me insane, but I don't want to talk about that. So, yes. More X-Men as dream thieves, yay! (This is my Inceptionverse!Raven icon, incidentally. She wants YOU on her team. Alex is unimpressed.)
kaydeefalls: charles looking at erik with hearts in his eyes omg (charles/erik)

We can make our choices built from love or from fear. -- Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1926-2004), Swiss psychiatrist, non-fiction author, supporter of hospice care and AIDS lecturer, best known for her delineation of the Five Stages of Grief.

So then this happened. Also available on AO3, if that's what floats your boat. (Seriously, now that AO3 supports embedding vids as well, I will never need another archive again.)

Title: A Hundred Visions and Revisions
Author: [personal profile] kaydeefalls
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (+ Doctor Who)
Rating: R
Characters: Charles/Erik + Canton Delaware III (Who)
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit, don't sue.
Summary: In which the CIA and FBI indulge in some inter-agency snooping, Erik hates Cerebro, a new mutant is found, and Charles is very distracting.
Notes: Written for this prompt at [livejournal.com profile] 1stclass_kink. Crossover with a character from Doctor Who and one comicsverse Avenger, but no knowledge of either other canon required. HUGE thanks to Brenda for the beta, and Quinn for the constant cheerleading.

The DC Pride parade route goes right past my theater today. The actors and I will be watching from the ginormous windows on our 2nd-floor green room. It will be fabulous.

Also, inevitable X-Men fic is inevitable. At least it kicked my writer's block? And trust me to find the only gen prompt on a kinkmeme. But hey, I've never written anything for a kinkmeme before. That was kinda fun.
