And Festivids are revealed! I only made the one. And man, it was brutal to make.

While my favorite film of 2014 was probably CA:TWS (um, if that wasn't obvious), I do think Snowpiercer may have been the best movie I saw last year. Even though it was incredibly difficult to watch.

I managed to edit down a 7-minute long song to under 5 mins for this vid. I'm pretty proud of that. It had to be this song -- something about the sheer relentlessness of it, the slow and inexorable build, the ticking underneath like a time bomb or a train rattling rhythmically over endless tracks...yeah. It's bleak as fuck. And look, ma, I made a Festivid without using Vienna Teng or Tom McRae! I think this is a first for me.

I may have gotten a bit attached to Danny Pink on Doctor Who. I knew I wanted to make a Danny/Clara vid pretty early on, but decided to wait until the end of the season. Boy, am I glad I waited. This would have been a very different vid if I hadn't.

This song has also wanted to be a vid since June or so. I knew it was right for this fandom, but at the time, I'd pretty much burned out on vidding Doctor Who, and I thought it was too similar in theme to previous Whoniverse vids I've done (particularly One Mississippi). So I held off, waiting for another fandom to fit itself to the song. MCU never quite connected for it. When I received my Festivids assignment -- for which I match SEVERAL fandoms -- I gave it another listen in case it would work for any of them. It didn't. It just made me think of Danny instead.

kaydeefalls: raven smiles brilliantly (raven hearts you)
Vidding is easier than writing. Fuck writing.

Also, while DoFP was pretty much the anti-plotbunny for me (it's hard for me to explain why, exactly, but seriously), it did give me all the Raven feels. And this song has been bouncing around in my head as a theoretical Avengers vid for many months now, but it definitely suits the X-Men universe better than the MCU.

I feel confident that this will be the least popular fanwork I post this year, because most of fandom seems to either actively dislike or feel entirely indifferent towards Raven. Whatever, I DO WHAT I WANT.

Am I done vidding Winter Soldier yet? No. No, I don't think so.

I've wanted to make a Sam vid from the beginning, but couldn't find the right song for it. Then last week I briefly revisited the Inception fandom (to help finish off Queen's Gambit), and while rewatching a couple of old Inception vids, I remembered that [livejournal.com profile] tricksterquinn had told me about wanting an Arthur vid to this one song, and it occurred to me that while yes, this would still make a most excellent Inception vid should she ever revisit her old idea, it would ALSO work exceedingly well for Sam Wilson.

Also, this wound up very Sam/Steve shippy. Which I am totally okay with. :D

For the record, I was supposed to be done vidding CATWS now. I had Firm Beliefs that there were no more Marvel vids that needed to happen in my life for the moment, at least until the DVD comes out and I can make them properly. (For example, I have a very different Steve vid started and shelved until then, because fuck cam footage, seriously.)

So Saturday was the first rehearsal for the latest show I'm stage managing, which is partly a dance theater piece, and they spent the day choreographing the first piece of music, which meant I got to listen to it approximately twenty or thirty times in the space of three hours. Like you do. And when I'm listening to the same damn song that much, my mind tends to mentally vid it, because that's just how my brain works. (I have roughly three hundred theoretical vids in my head at any given time, 99% of which I'll never actually make because the ideas aren't strong enough to bother with.)

Yeah, well. Then I went home and vidded the first 2/3 of the damn song in one sitting, and at that point, you may as well concede defeat.

This is not the sort of song I generally vid. Or at least, I don't think it is. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe all of my vids are basically the same at this point, except with different characters in them. I dunno. Anyway, look, I made a thing. It's about Natasha. My feelings about Natasha aren't as immediately gut-wrenching as my feelings about Bucky (and, by proxy, Steve), but damn, she's a compelling character.

For the record, I have seen the new X-Men movie, and very much enjoyed it. But it didn't seem to deter my fannish brain from being all Steve&Bucky, all the time. Alas.

I planned on having a Steve vid ready for Memorial Day, but I needed to rip the draft apart and rework it for actual coherency, so whatever, it's a week late for the deadline I made up in my head. Anyway. Apparently I now possess a multitude of Steve feels as well as Bucky feels, who knew? I'm kind of embarrassed that he was my least favorite Avenger up until Winter Soldier came out, but in fairness, I still don't think the first Cap movie was all that great. It's a lot easier to rewatch when I fast forward through all the cartoonish fight sequences and just focus on the parts that include Bucky, Peggy, Stark, or the Commandos. Or Steve being a goober and running into things. I did not include Steve running into things in this vid, which is a pity, because he does that a lot and it's kind of hilarious. But it had nothing to do with the story I was trying to tell in this one, so. Maybe next time.

So I posted a Bucky fic yesterday, because Bucky Barnes has taken over my life lately. But this vid bunny came first, even if I couldn't start it due to lack of source. Then I unexpectedly found decent cam footage.

I will almost definitely remaster this once CA:TWS comes out on DVD. And I do feel weird vidding with, y'know, cam source. But I'd rather make the vid now with what I've got while I'm still in this stage of new fandom obsession, and fix it with proper source later, than wait until better source video exists when I may no longer have the motivation to make the vid.

This song IS WinterSoldier!Bucky for me, obviously, since I wound up stealing the lyrics for the fic title as well.

Final festivid for the year. This one I just couldn't resist. I like reading through my friends' Dear Festividder letters, and I'd very much hoped to be matched on Cloud Atlas as my Festivids fandom, so when one of my very favorite vidders made a very lovely request for that fandom, I had to make it happen.

Again, I realize that the Vienna Teng kinda made it obviously one of mine. I don't even care. [personal profile] such_heights loves Vienna Teng even more than I do. It had to happen.

I know this movie has some problematic elements, but the overarching themes are gorgeous, and I love the book as well, and the cinematography is just too pretty not to vid.

Next up from Festivids: yes it's another Pacific Rim vid to the soundtrack of Tom McRae. I never claimed that my vids weren't INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS.

See, the thing is, when I saw the assignment and starting shuffling through my iTunes in search of a good song to vid, this is actual the first one that really jumped out at me as a THIS MUST BE A PACIFIC RIM VID RIGHT THE FUCK NOW. Except that it was also obviously going to be a Newt vid, and my recipient wanted a Mako&Raleigh vid, and I very badly wanted to make a Mako&Raleigh vid because I love their faces an awful lot. (It also meant that I was ODing a bit on Charlie Hunnam around mid-December, because I was simultaneously making that vid and rewatching Queer As Folk UK for my Yuletide fic. It was a confusing time.)

So once I made my assigned vid, I came back to the Newt bunny, and browsing through the Festivids requests, saw that someone else had actually requested a vid about the scientists. So that was all the excuse I needed. I really do see this one as a sort of companion piece to But I'm Hopeful Yet -- the missing parts of the story. It also provided me with an unexpected challenge: how to vid a character who talks ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I generally try to avoid talky-face in vids, as a rule, but man, it is impossible to get clips of Newt in which he isn't running off at the mouth.

So in addition to working my way through the WIP fic of doom, I've also been trying to slog through my vidding WIP folder of late. I've blathered a bit about the Ponds vid. That's still in progress. But I did finally finish up a Hunger Games vid that I've been storyboarding since, oh, five seconds after seeing the movie for the first time.

Caesar Flickerman makes a few more jokes, and then it's time for the show. This will last exactly three hours and is required viewing for all of Panem. As the lights dim and the seal appears on the screen, I realize I'm unprepared for this. I do not want to watch my twenty-two fellow tributes die. I saw enough of them die the first time. My heart starts pounding and I have a strong impulse to run. How have the other victors faced this alone? During the highlights, they periodically show the winner's reaction up on a box in the corner of the screen. I think back to earlier years. some are triumphant, pumping their fists in the air, beating their chests. Most just seem stunned. All I know is that the only thing keeping me on this love seat is Peeta - his arm around my shoulder, his other hand claimed by both of mine. Of course, the previous victors didn't have the Capitol looking for a way to destroy them.

Condensing several weeks into three hours is quite a feat, especially when you consider how many cameras were going at once. Whoever puts together the highlights has to choose what sort of story to tell. This year, for the first time, they tell a love story. I know Peeta and I won, but a disproportionate amount of time is spent on us, right from the beginning. I'm glad though, because it supports the whole crazy-in-love thing that's my defense for defying the Capitol, plus it means we won't have as much time to linger over the deaths.

I'm not gonna lie, I have planned to make a Korra vid to this song since the existence of the series was announced. Not a single episode of LoK existed, and I already knew I would vid this song about Korra and Aang and the Avatar line and how fucking pressuring and confusing being the Avatar is, and how they both suffer and learn from past lives' mistakes. And then the series actually aired, and the song continued to obviously be completely about Korra. Ugh, the lyrics are just too perfect to pass up -- "then you had to bring up reincarnation over a couple of beers the other night / and now I'm serving time for mistakes made by another in another lifetime", or "but then again it feels like some sort of inspiration to let the next life off the hook / but she'll say look what I had to overcome from my last life, I think I'll write a book."

So, I'm super glad that [personal profile] kouredios requested a Korra introspection/aangst vid, because it was exactly the excuse I needed to actually make this thing. :D

As I was clipping, I noticed all kinds of AWESOME parallels between the Gaang and Korra's Team Avatar that I badly wanted to include, but it started getting too bloated and disjointed, so for this particular story, I stuck with Korra and Aang. Someday I will find the right vid to tell the story of the parallels between Zuko and Asami, for damn sure, and also all the rest of them. (I feel like Asami's true inheritance is from Sokka and Suki's line of nonbender genius, but goddamn, she and Zuko have an awful lot in common. Another time.)

Lullaby for a Stormy Night from kaydee falls on Vimeo.

It took me a long time to settle on a song for this vid. I had really wanted to find a quiet arrangement of "Bye Bye Blackbird", actually, like the version sung in the film History Boys, but hours and hours of hunting provided me with nothing that felt right (every cover I could find was either way too jazzy or way too slow). So I trawled through my iTunes library for something else, and, well, I do tend to default to Vienna Teng. I've seen a couple of vids to this song before -- [personal profile] such_heights did a fabulous Amy Pond vid to it, and it turned up on Festivids a few years back as well -- which made me wary, because I don't like retreading ground others have covered better. But it just WORKED so well for Ofelia, with Mercedes' lullaby, and brought out the darker undertones of the song in ways that kind of gave me chills just imagining it. (The wind makes creatures of our trees / and the branches to hands / they're not real, understand, except, of course, for Ofelia, they ARE real, UGH MY HEART.) So, yes. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, in the end.

And Quinn was SUPER HELPFUL listening to me blather about it and pointing out things that weren't quite clear or working in the first draft, so thank you, again!

I would very much like for this one to count for [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo as well, but none of my prompts really fit (except "stars", in the rockstar sense, but already filled that with the other vid). And not gonna lie, looking at the unused footage I clipped, I could've made the entire vid about just Natasha and/or Pepper alone. But what fun would that be? With apologies to Betty Ross, who I hear is a hell of a dame, but I just haven't ever seen any of the Hulk movies.
