kaydeefalls: theater as viewed from the wings (i live on the stage)
My Lighting Design class is going to be all kinds of awesome. The prof is incredibly enthusiastic about lighting in an oddly low-key sort of way, and he's all about being blatantly honest and telling lots of stories and messing around with lights a lot instead of taking exams, and how our final assessment is to light a show and he hopes we all do terrible designs because then we'll be able to analyze them more interestingly and learn more from them and get higher marks. Gah. I signed up for this class because, as a director, I'm sick of feeling like an idiot when I talk to my lighting designer and I want to actually be able to talk intelligently about it. But this guy makes me want to BE an LD. So much coolness.

My other classes here so far have just been, well, classes. You know. Interesting enough, in their way, but nothing brilliant. So this is a huge improvement. Maybe I really will get something out of being here.

So I finally went to one of the stupid IS network clinics, the final step to connect my laptop to the internet, and did all the things I was supposed to, and everything was fine with my computer and so on... and, of course, at the second-to-last step within the clinic instructions, something went wrong. Three people out of the clinic, myself included, were unable to open the connection to the network. Why, you may ask? BECAUSE THE IS SERVICES SERVER WAS BACKLOGGED. Which meant, sorry, it won't work right now and we close at 4, so you'll have to come back on Monday to finish. Will it work in an hour? Yes, probably, but we're closed then.

I was there for a fucking hour and a half, and because something went screwy on THEIR part, NOT MINE, I can't complete the connection process until Monday. Because they close at 4pm. And aren't open weekends. If they'd just turn on the network point in my dorm room, I would be able to complete the connection there when the server straightened itself out, but nope. Won't turn on the network until we complete the process. Never mind that the ONLY part of the process I HAVEN'T completed is typing in the network address and clicking "Okay". Seriously. That's all I have to do. Nope. Have to wait 'til Monday. Have to lug my laptop BACK to IS on Monday. Or, alternately, lug my laptop to the library and finish the connection there...and then come back in to IS on Monday to verify that it's been completed. And once it's been verified -- whether I do it myself and come in to verify, or finish the process there with them, it takes another day before they'll process it and turn on the internet in my room anyway. So no matter what I do, no internet until Tuesday. At the earliest.

I WILL HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THIS ROOM FOR MORE THAN TWO WEEKS BY THEN.

Then again, it could be worse. One of the other two people at the clinic having the same problem? Has to download software for her class. And has been trying to connect to do so since mid-September.

These people are MODELS of inefficiency. So much hatred.

I have decided to apply myself to properly embodying the stereotype of the friendless nerd. In order to further this most noble ambition, I have elected to spend my Friday night alone in the campus computer room. Perhaps I shall meet someone else of similar persuasions and equally socially inept.

Oh, this is getting pathetic.
