So. Troy. Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed myself.
I'm usually cool with adaptations of books into movies. I automatically seek to defend most changes from a cinematic perspective. But I still don't like what they did to Menelaus. I didn't like what they made of his character, I didn't like his death. The whole "battle" between him and Paris was cool, and I lurve "I'm brave and stupid really oh wait don't kill me augh HECTOR SAVE ME!" Paris. Paris is so human here. I like that. But anyway. Yes. Hector killing Menelaus? Um, no.
Also, the ten-year war became, like, the ten-day war. WTF?
Liked Briseis a lot, although the whole romance thing came a little out of left field. But she was cool. So was Andromache. Yay women!
Helen? Meh. She's cute, I guess.
The Boyfriend made fun of me because I squealed every time Odysseus came onscreen. *marries Bean, has his babies, etc* Odyssey, please!
I hate to say it, but I understand why they killed Achilles after the Trojan Horse thing. They set up Achilles as the main character of this film. You can't kill off the main character before the climax. You just CAN'T. The killing of the main character BECOMES the climax, so you can't do that and then be all like, "but wait! then there was this horse! and these secondary characters! you're all still paying attention, right?!" The Boyfriend suggests that maybe Achilles shouldn't have been the main character, thus allowing him to die at the proper time, but that would involve, um, rewriting most of the movie. Not necessarily a bad idea.
I don't quite feel the Eric Bana love, but Hector was awesome all the same. Some moron in the audience started clapping when Achilles killed Hecter. YOU DO NOT APPLAUD THE DEATH OF HECTOR, BITCH. *drags said audience member around theater tied by feet behind chariot*
Heel!
PRIAM! <3
I like what they did withStryker Agamemnon. Evil!Agamemnon is a far more interesting a character than the noble!Agamemnon that I remembered from Iliad. Coolness.
Patrokles was perfect. "Cousin" my ass.
Er, yeah. Fun movie. Not great movie, but worth seeing. I doubt I'll see it again or buy the DVD, but I'm glad I saw it, anyway.
In other news, where the hell did my free time go, dammit? Oh, right, my show opens this week. Funny, that. But still. Want time to finish stupid zinefic already!
