I actually got the idea reading a very different, Remus-centric fic, in which it was mentioned almost off-hand that Sirius had never really fit back into the world, that it was better for him to have died than lived. That really struck me. Because in a horrible way...it's true, isn't it? Maybe Rowling killed him off as a kindness.
