In Defense of Sociology: familiarity with these dead white guys really is part of being an educated person, and you'll be amazed at the number of times their ideas come up in plays as well as all other writing. They were revolutionaries, overthrowing the established order, and offering amazing insights even when they were wrong (Freud was such a sexist, omg). So I think you're being taught very badly, but the idea isn't all wrong.
