So last night (or this morning) I had a very vivid dream in which I was trying to persuade my boyfriend that we should go see that Casanova movie, citing Heath Ledger's hotness and this one fantastic review I read in the NYTimes a while ago and so on. The dream went on to other strange things from there, but it was a very reasonable argument, so when I woke up I checked online, and sure enough, Casanova just opened in Dublin this week. So I bought a ticket and went.
OMG, most amazingest movie EVAR. It's high farce at its greatest, pure fluff of the best sort. You can tell that all of the actors are enjoying themselves immensely. It's got all the things you expect from a period farce, with your mistaken identities and double entendres and, of course, swordfights. The plot is ridiculous and fun, and the twists -- particularly the final twist -- are joyfully predictable, in the sense that you know it's coming and it's all so beautifully satisfying once it comes. It's got its cheesy moments, but they're very forgivable in light of everything else, and fortunately the script doesn't linger long enough on them to hurt the fun. And oh my goodness, Heath Ledger makes a wonderful Casanova. *fans self* I didn't even project Ennismuch. I highly recommend seeing it, or renting it -- it's not the sort of movie that needs to be seen on the big screen, but it's well worth watching when you need a bit of an upper. Good stuff, that.
