I think in this situation you'd either have to get a replacement cable for the camera, or a card reader for your laptop. No cable necessary, just take the card out and plug it in.
But yes, I'm having the same problem - my mom's camera is so bulky but it takes great pics and records video with sound, and my own camera is small with massive megapixel, but eats and craps batteries and hates my face. It's a lovely world of technology we live in!
