better than nothing

In an attempt to get past my block on the YA fantasy thing, I've been free-writing for the main character in the journal I've set aside for the project. It's been kind of fun, and while the actual text I've produced won't ever see the light of day, I think I'm getting a better grasp of the character and where she's coming from, which is never a bad thing. My real problem right now with where I am on
elementmages is that I'm stuck in an expositionary pit from which no actual action is emerging. ANd fun as it is to have characters engage in fantasy world political debates...well, yeah, not so much with the being of interest to anyone else. Any general ideas how to get unstuck from that? Apart from throwing in a random crisis and seeing how the characters react. Argh.
In other writingness, I am in fact working on the ficlet requests from a couple of weeks ago, in that I've got several pages written. My real problem there is that I am, apparently, incapable of writing ficlets, and they've each blossomed into actual full-length fics. Oops. I'd like to finish at least one of them up this weekend, but me and free time don't see much of each other these days, so who knows.
