children of earth: day one
Jul. 6th, 2009 08:33 pmHOLY MOTHER OF GOD THAT WAS AWESOME.
This is going to be the best week ever.
Okay, I totally fell for Rupesh. Holy SHIT. I was 100% fangirling him as the new medic-to-be, AND THEN. Look, I love twists, I love predicting twists, and that caught me completely by surprise. And then they fucking KILLED him, too! Way to fuck with my head, show.
Like Lois, still trying to figure out how to recruit her to Torchwood. She doesn't seem to have any particularly exciting tech skills, so she can't fill Tosh's shoes -- but on the other hand, if Ianto is swinging more in a techie direction, maybe she can fill in his old role as general support? I dunno, man, I'm just trying to reconstruct the team here. (There's a reason my BigBang was so singlemindedly devoted to plugging in the team gaps with ex-companions; I WANT TO BE PLAYING WITH A FULL TEAM.)
Nice excuse for Martha's absence. Yay, Martha/Tom!
Preggers!Gwen = win. It's the next logical step in her particular character arc as trying to maintain the life/work balance. Series 1 was the lure of the dangerous overwhelming reality (Jack vs. Rhys, Torchwood vs. police work, etc); series 2 was struggling toward a happy medium (letting Rhys in on the secret, going ahead with the wedding); now series 3 is sorting out whether a family outside can be compatible with the work inside, with Jack and Ianto's individual family issues providing a nice counterpoint. Of course Jack fathered a child at some point -- hell, I'm shocked that there's just the one -- and, similarly, of course he never really figured out how to make that work.
And Ianto. Um, we're all aware that my love for Ianto defies all reason and knows no boundaries, right? Right. Glad that's sorted. So: OH IANTO OH OH OH. PURE LOVE. His awkwardness around his niece and nephew! His utter inability to connect with his brother-in-law! His SISTER! Oh, gosh, I love him to bits, he's such a fish out of water in that scene.
And the plot of the episode really drags you in right from the get-go, and never stops, which I also adore. Torchwood isn't too big on plot in general, quite frankly, and I'm used to handwaving it a bit, and I'm sure if I looked more closely at this one I'd find plenty of holes. But that's not really why I'm here, is it? It's a hell of a fun ride, and that's all I'm looking for. I love characters over story any day, and for me, Torchwood is ALL about character.
So...that leaves me with the obvious. That shrill, eerie sound you heard in the episode? That was not the children screaming. That was the sound of twelve thousand Jack/Ianto shippers squeeing. Let's be honest. This show has officially moved into fanfic territory, and I LOVE IT. Guilty pleasure, check. I was giddy from Gwen's first "shenanigans in the dark" line, frankly. The ongoing bicker about the word "couple", the utter woobie-ness of IANTO'S LITTLE FACE, the absolutely adorkable back-and-forth they had at the hospital, the conversation about Jack with Ianto's sister, just...everything. Oh my god. And Jack bodily dragging Ianto over to the lift, of course. Nngk. Thank you come again. Look, I'm a shipper. I fall in love with a character, and then I fall in love with whoever that character falls in love with, and that is my entrance point to just about everything I'm fannish about. (I certainly enjoy plenty of shows/movies/books without being particularly shippy, but I rarely participate in those fandoms at all, so.) In Torchwood, my love is primarily for Ianto, then Jack/Ianto, then the show as a whole. This is just how I am. And it is not all that common that my ship is catered to in canon quite this spectacularly, so I'm enjoying the hell out of this.
And, in conclusion: OH HOLY SHIT THAT WAS JUST THE FIRST EPISODE, WHAT THE FUCK IS GONNA HAPPEN IN THE REST?
ETA: I ALMOST FORGOT TO SAY. They have no car and they have no Hub! WHAT THE FUCK. I don't think the loss of the Hub will hit me properly until we see the wreckage in the next episode -- or, at least, I assume we'll see the wreckage in the next episode. I dunno. I can't imagine the Hub being gone.
And while we're at it, please tell me Myfanwy was out hunting that night! ASKLHJFLKANLIOEDLHASKFB DON'T KILL THE PET PTERODACTYL.
ETA2: Eh, fuck the fannish glee stuff (now deleted), you can bitch here if you want. I'll just disagree. :)
Although, I will say: that joke was not funny, Jack Harkness. You know the one I mean. STOP TRYING TO FORESHADOW IANTO'S DEATH, WRITERS. Urg. Please no, please no, please no, la la la la la.
ETA3: Guys, this is how Ianto looks at Jack:
Just sayin'.

Date: 2009-07-07 01:24 am (UTC)Dear GOD no, start them properly at the beginning first. Or at least do a highlights tour of series 1 and then set them through series 2. This is NOT a good place to start.

Date: 2009-07-07 01:29 am (UTC)I just.....
I don't even....
Can I just point to what you said? OMG Rupesh! I don't fall for stuff very easily in tv shows, I'm pretty good at spotting things, usually. But there I was, just adoring him, and the fucker shot Jack! I might have literally shrieked (in a relatively quiet, don't want to alarm anyone else in the house way).
And IANTO! Oh god, oh god.
Can I count on you to co-lead the angry pitchfork wielding mob should things go badly on the Ianto front?
I need a moment to calm down. I just now turned it off.
Breath, Shannon, breeaathe.
I'm going to try to compose myself and then I'll have to post some more squee of my own. :D
It needs to be tomorrow, RIGHT NOW.

Date: 2009-07-07 01:36 am (UTC)Oh, honey, there will be no pitchforks in my mob. There will be freaking SHOTGUNS. And possibly rocket launchers. *twitches* I am so not thinking about that right now.

Date: 2009-07-07 02:09 am (UTC)Ianto: "You are going to get us killed."
Jack: "No, you are gonna get killed, not me. You'll die like a dog. An ugly dog!"
kaydee: OH YOU FUCKING DIDN'T.
Also, Jack's coat! OH NOES! I hadn't thought of that!

Date: 2009-07-07 02:12 am (UTC)Ianto always makes me want to just give him a hug.
I recall seeing some pictures from the set a few months back...it wasn't in tonight's episode so I'll assume it's coming up. The coat was intact. I guess it's sort of like Indiana Jones' hat. Maybe it regenerates with him. Or maybe Ianto has a closet full of identical coats for him somewhere.
I loved Ianto's sister.

Date: 2009-07-07 02:23 am (UTC)Oh. I love them so much.
And by the way...I read your big bang fic and I don't think I commented at the time because it took me awhile to finish it but I LOVED it. It was really really good. I've been thinking of a big long TW fic, but I can't quite work out the story yet.

Date: 2009-07-07 02:27 am (UTC)Oh! Thank you! Hey, just start writing it -- it's amazing how the plot details work themselves out when you're 20,000 words in and realize that you have to tie those three threads together somehow or it'll all fall apart...
