yearly writing/vidding round-up

Aaand it's time for my favorite meme of the new year: fannish creativity round-up!

+ 2 vids for
festivids, which will be revealed later this month
Leitmotif(s) of the year: In fics -- memory, and time, and history repeating itself over and over again. These are always my favorite themes to play with. Nearly of the fics I completed this year played with timey-wimeyness or memory in some way. here is my song for the asking was told in reverse chronological order, how Morgana became Morgan le Fay; The Myth of Fingerprints was completely non-chronological, Jack across time and lovers and memories seeping into the very fabric of his skin; To Her Coy Mistress was all timey-wimey everything and the intersections of two nonlinear lives (three, if you include Jack); lovely branches was echoes of the Bad Wolf across time and universes; The Rose of Jericho integrated flashbacks with chronological storytelling to show how Ianto became the person he is and beyond, not to mention stories and memories becoming entwined to save the world; Because it is bitter, and because it is my heart plays with dreams and memory and the definition of reality; and So We'll Go No More A-Roving wraps it all up into the conclusion that all times are now, and everything is happening at one everywhere. Look, I am not subtle with my themes, okay? And I'm sure I'll continue to play with that going into next year, although I'm currently transitioning thematically into storytelling and truth and reality, so memory will remain important but time itself may become secondary.
In vids, I'm all about the character studies. Fairly simple. Cobb and addiction; Amy and adventure; Gwen and love; Morgana and isolation... et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Favorite(s) of the batch: Deep down, I think I love lovely branches the best. Amy and Rose and fairy tales and growing up and moving on. Oh, my girls. In vids -- well, I love all of my vids always and forever, but probably Harbor, because GWEN IS THE AWESOMEST ALWAYS, and it also began my love affair with vidding Vienna Teng songs.
Best of the batch: I can never judge this. The Myth of Fingerprints just worked. The Rose of Jericho is not perfect, but that's the biggest and most comprehensive, sprawling saga of a plot I've ever attempted, and I'm really quite proud of it. Vids -- god, I really don't know. Possibly Stray Italian Greyhound. (Actually, I think one of my festivids was the best, technically, but cannot speak of that right now.)
Most underappreciated by the universe: Eh. For the most part, vids will never get as much love as fics, which saddens me, but I'm not really going to complain. HOT SHOT got by far the least feedback of anything, but it was also WEIRD -- a fun, interesting experiment of a gift vid, but very, very different from my usual style. So I'm not really fussed that it didn't get much of a response. I do wish End of the World News had gotten more attention, because I loved it lots, but it wasn't Arthur/Eames, so I'm not particularly surprised.
Favorite opening line: Jack maps out the universe in echoes. - The Myth of Fingerprints.
Runner-up: Frankly, as brawls went, it was nothing to write home about. - The Curious Incident of the Harpies in Broad Daylight
Favorite closing line: "When she looks back at the CCTV, the street is empty." - The Rose of Jericho, because it's so simple: they're there, and then they're gone, and that's all.
Runner-up: He closes his eyes and waits for the kick. - Because it is bitter, and because it is my heart
Favorite line from anywhere: Look, this is hard to choose. I tend to be particularly proud of either paragraphs or banterrific exchanges, not single lines.
"Remember the time he threatened to shoot you? Because that was like two minutes ago." - Andy Davidson, The Rose of Jericho. I just cackled a lot to myself writing this.
Runner-up: Instead, he settles with it, slowing, letting the worlds wash over and around him until he is perfectly still, putting down roots and inhabiting the universe of memory, filled to the brim with the spaces of those left behind. - The Myth of Fingerprints
Most fun to write: The Curious Incident of the Harpies in Broad Daylight. Hands down. Jesus fucking Christ, I don't even know where that came from. Parts of To Her Coy Mistress were also great fun. And I loved vidding Stray Italian Greyhound. Also, though it was a relatively small part of the fic as a whole, I loved loved LOVED writing John Hart's voice in The Rose of Jericho. He just has no filter whatsoever, it's enormously entertaining.
Sexiest fic: This was a virtually sex-free year in fic for me. Ah, well. I never really write explicit sex scenes, anyway.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: I don't think I broke my own brain at all this year. Because it is bitter, and because it is my heart was a bit twisted, but mostly in terms of shifting definitions of reality. There was some violence, but it was more disturbing in terms of Arthur's psychology than actually graphic. In vids, as previously mentioned, HOT SHOT was kind of weird. And violent, but that's the source.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: All of them, always. Well, and To Her Coy Mistress, but I'd never really given Lady Christina or Jenny much thought before that fic happened, so I'm not sure that counts. I found new shades of Ianto (and, to a lesser extent, Martha and Gwen) in The Rose of Jericho, and I really think that was the last story I needed to tell in the Torchwood fandom. (Not that I'm writing it off for good, because who knows? But yeah.) And I learned a lot more about Cobb in vidding End of the World News, and even more again in a fic I'm currently working on, but anyway.
New pairing/genre/fandom you never predicted writing in January: Well, no one could have predicted the Inception fandom, so. Also, probably no one could have predicted the epic adventures of Gwaine and Lancelot, Not-Quite-Knights For Hire (While We Wait For Arthur To Become King). GodDAMN.
Hardest fic to write: The Rose of Jericho took me about a year to write. In fairness, it was also 63,000 words -- by far the longest fic I've ever written. That PLOT, holy shit.
Biggest disappointment: What Am I Gonna Do Now just sort of seemed to fall flat. I still like it, though. I may not love all my fics equally, but I don't post the ones that fizzle, so nothing there.
Biggest surprise: The Curious Incident of the Harpies in Broad Daylight got a RIDICULOUSLY large reaction, considering that it's pointless crack with no redeeming value. And I wrote it in the space of a couple of days. Just. What. I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive feedback I received for Harbor. Apparently I should stick around the Merlin fandom if I want comments.
Most telling fic: Nothing in particular this year, or all of them at once. See: leitmotifs. This was the year of the ladies for me -- of eight fics and seven vids, four fics and three vids focused exclusively on female characters, and most of the others were ensemble-oriented and featured the girls prominently. Only two fics and two vids were exclusively male. It's a start.
What's next?
festivids will be posted! I'm also nearly done with an Ariadne vid. Hopefully, I'll actually finish my two Inception WIPs, and there are several vids in the works -- one Amy/Rory, one Arthur Pendragon (to round out my Vienna Teng character study vids for Merlin), a few others of various fandoms. And the
white_lotus A:tLA exchange, for which I'm almost certainly vidding. And a Toshiko fic that I'd like to finish, probably for
halfamoon. And...
No, what's really next? Well, my show is closing in a couple of hours, and there will be much rejoicing. :D I get my life back! Hopefully this will enable more fannishness.
I know it's meant for fics, but I'm including vids in here too. Since I've made roughly the same amount of each this year.
