[This entry was mostly written about two weeks ago. Just got around to finishing it.]
I love movies. I want to be a real film geek. Unfortunately, my knowledge of films has always been severely limited when it comes to anything pre-Star Wars. Thus was born my Classic Film Self-Education Project, wherein [almost] every week this summer I went out and rented two movies out of the "classics" section of my local video store. In alphabetical order, even (although I skipped a few letters due to lack of interesting-looking films). I doubt anyone will be interested in my findings, but...
-12 Angry Men (Best Non-Courtroom Courtroom Drama Award)
-2001: A Space Odyssey (WTF?! Award for ten-minute-long shots of pods landing and classical music)
-African Queen (Dirtiest Man Award for Humphrey Bogart being so damn dirty)
-Bridge on the River Kwai (OMG Everyone Dies Award for somewhat unexpected massacre)
-Cabaret (OT3 Award for the beauty of the theoretical behind-the-scenes threesome sex)
-Dr. No (Bond Award for starting the franchise)
-Harvey (Bunnies! Award for having a very large imaginary one)
-In the Heat of the Night (Best Use of Racial Prejudice Without Being Preachy Award)
-Joan of Arc (MST Award for badness and being THAT easy to make fun of)
-King Rat (Unfini- Award for being so boring that I gave up 45 minutes in)
-Lady From Shanghai (Best Use of Mirrors in Otherwise Eh Film Award)
-Lolita (Peter Sellers Is The Coolest Award for Peter Sellers being, well, The Coolest)
-Maltese Falcon (Film Noire Award for setting all the stereotypes)
-North By Northwest (Most Creative Location For Sex Award for sex in a train cabin compartment; also, Mount Rushmore Award for having people fall off it)
-On the Waterfront (Contenduh Award because he coulda been one)
-Philadelphia Story (Much Ado About Nothing Award for making so much nothing so entertaining)
-Rear Window (Best Suspense Movie EVER Award)
-Some Like It Hot (Canon!Slash Award because Jack Lemmon looks hot in drag)
-To Kill A Mockingbird (Awwwww Award for being genuinely heartwarming and family-friendly without being cutesy)
-Vertigo (Meh? Award for being so good and yet leaving me so oddly unsatisfied)
-Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Alcohol Award because the four characters consume so bloody much of it)
-Z (Best Foreign Political Film Award for the realness of the events portrayed)
To be continued next summer...
