Today sucked about as badly as yesterday. But then I got home and saw that [livejournal.com profile] msallegro posted the next part of "New Roles," and [livejournal.com profile] juweldom posted the next part of "Slightly Crooked" and "Wisdom." And believe me, a double dose of Dom/Lij plus one part Merry/Pip made me feel a helluva lot better. ::sighs happily::

And now for something completely different:

Fanfic survey, gacked from just about everyone.

your pseudonym:
kaydee falls.

how long have you known about/read/written fanfiction?
I think I first discovered it...four years ago? And wrote my first fic about three years ago.

what fandom(s) do you read/write/are you involved in?
At the moment, LotR and the RPS therein. Used to be majorly involved in Rentfic, but now I only read it every other month or so, and I've stopped writing it completely. Might go back to it eventually. Also did a brief stint in Aida-fic. And my first ever fandom was (like so many other people's) X-Files. I read much more XF fic than I ever wrote, which is a good thing.

who is/are your favorite character(s)
LotR: MerryPippin. They go together. Can't pick one over the other.
RPS: hobbitsnorli. Especially Domlijah.
Rent: Benny. He's criminally overlooked.
XF: I was an incurable MSR shipper, but Krycek rocks hard.

do you identify with certain characters?
I can identify with any character, if it's a good fic. Especially in Rentfic -- I wrote fics from just about every possible character's POV, including Alison, April, and the squeegee man. Good times, good times...

what type/genre of fanfic do you read/write?
Nowadays, slash.

why do you read/write fanfiction?
I have absolutely no idea. I just love it. Well, most of it. ;)

do you read official novel adaptations of TV shows?
I did, once, but it just wasn't the same. Weird, huh?

what are your favorite subgenres and why?
I like angst, but in the hands of the wrong author it can be dreadful. Humor/parody is always fun.

is there any kind of fan fiction you wouldn't read?
Overwhelming sappiness/fluffiness. Bad characterizations. BDSM. And I'm extremely cautious around rapefic.

do you prefer to read fanfiction online or in zines?
Does anyone actually GET zines anymore?

are you a member of a mailing list?
Oh yes. Several.

if yes, do you participate actively on the list or do you prefer to 'lurk'?
I post fics occasionally, but other than that I'm a lurker.

how actively are you involved in your fandom(s)?
Moderately, I guess, although it's a lot harder now that school is back in session.

do you know other fans personally?
Just a couple.

do you have friends who read/write fanfiction?
::points at [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud:: It's all her fault! SHE'S the one who got me started in this crazy fandom. Oh, and Tari's into fanfic. I have another friend who read Rentfic.

do you talk about fanfiction with your friends and/or family?
Lydia's fault, all Lydia's fault. And I sometimes mention it to my closest friends, and then they roll their eyes. I used to talk about it with my mom -- actually got her to read an XF fic or two -- but not anymore.

how intensely are you involved with fanfiction/the fan community?
It occupies most of my free time, does that count?

do you attend conventions?
Haven't yet, would like to.

do you send feedback regularly?
Only if I REALLY like a story, or if the author is a friend. I'm a lazy bum.

do you like to read AU stories?
I've seen a few good ones, but most just don't work.

how important is feedback to you?
More important than it should be.

would you write even if you didn't get any?
Don't see why not. I like writing. But feedback definitely helps. ;)

do you reply to every feedback/fanmail you get?
Yes. They took the time to write to me, I can certainly spare a minute or so to respond, if only to say thank you.

do you have your stories beta'd before you post them? if you do, do you think the comments/suggestions of a beta reader help your writing?
This is the first fandom I've used a beta in, and boy is that a good thing! I'm pretty anal about spelling/grammar already, but having someone else read my stuff is incredibly helpful. I might not notice plot holes, and I have trouble with showing-not-telling, so a good beta is invaluable. And I've got the best. ;)

in your favorite fandom, what are the major differences between canon and fanon?
Merry and Pippin are sometimes distressingly sappy-fluffy in fanon. And the boys probably aren't all shagging each other in RPS canon...

have you ever worked as a beta reader?
Yup. Exactly twice.

if you beta, how frequently do you do that?
Um...exactly twice?

what is your primary motivator for accepting a beta reading assignment?
I was bored, and someone sent out a beta plea to the list, so I bit. A couple of weeks ago, I beta'd her second fic. I might whore myself out as a regular beta eventually, but right now I don't have the time.
