Recently, I watched the HBO miniseries Angels in America, based on the award-winning plays by Tony Kushner. I didn't think it was perfect, and parts dragged a bit, but all in all it was well worth the six hours (!) I spent watching it. Stellar acting, intriguing story, and Kushner writes dialogue very, very well.

Then I made the mistake of checking out the IMDB comment boards.

Okay, AIA is a story of AIDS in 1985 (I'm oversimplifying a LOT here, but yeah). Most of the characters are gay men, some of whom have AIDS. There are sex scenes between men, a "normal" heterosexual sex scene, and even sex between a female angel (Emma Thompson) and another woman (Meryl Streep). For the most part, fairly straightforward movie-type sex scenes. Not even close to porno. But, yes, gay sex which was very hot and pretty but that's another story.

One of the IMDB comments (emphasis mine):
Seems the Gay community will do anything to try to find acceptability. I don't pretend to understand what being a homosexual is like nor am I trying to bash them. But lets face it, this is just another attempt to try to get people to accept an mental problem as normal. I feel that gays should have the same rights as anyone that has weird fetishes. I did find the title very misleading, but this seems to be the case for most gay movies. The acting was good, to say the least. If this movie was to focus on the sad facts of AIDS it didn't. However, I found some scenes very sackening and distasteful. I am surprised they have not had scenes with animals, dead people, etc. to also add to the grossness. If HBO is trying to get viewers by shock they failed.

Many other commenters had complaints along similar lines.

I really hate stupid people.

Honey, if you're trying to bring a point across, at least try to not grossly misspell the adjectives meant to express your deep disgust. My sackened, heterosexual ass.

Seriously. An mental problem, indeed.

Question: where do the angels come in? I've always been pretty curious about that show, but I had no idea what it was about until reading your synopsis just now. (Hey, I don't have cable, so all I had to go on were those not-very-illuminating ads on buses and subways.)

As for the IMDb people...::sighs:: People are so dumb.
