So I'm trying to buy the QAF UK DVDs. So I go on amazon.co.uk because, well, I'm in Ireland. And they have it for about 11 pounds, or about $20 American. But it's region 2 format, and, as I am American, I need a region 1. So I go to US amazon.com, thinking that at least I can order it now and just wait until winter break to watch it. The price for the region 1 encoding? $64. THREE TIMES AS EXPENSIVE.

This is ridiculous. That's about as much as I paid for a full X-Files season, which is 24 hour-long episodes. QAF would be 8 half-hour episodes. WTF?

So, is there ANY way for a nice American girl to purchase this DVD without spending waaaaay more than it's worth?

It's fucking ridiculous, isn't it? No wonder people pirate things, when this garbage goes on routinely.

Wish I could help, but this kind of stuff is why I have an all-region DVD player. Maybe you can find it cheaper on eBay...

Pirating it is, then. I suppose it's possible that my laptop's DVD player could read region 2, but I haven't the faintest idea how to find out.

hire a dvd from the video store? from your uni library? i strongly recommend getting a multi-region player. i think generally, unless your dvd-rom drive is newnewnew, computer dvd drives are multi-region, or there is a crack to get around them.

Hmm. Good idea. Perhaps I shall hit up one of my Irish flatmates for a DVD to test this.

You have an iBook, right? Basically, you can change the region codes (e.g., you stick in the DVD and your computer automagically switches the region to match the DVD, asking you to confirm) something like 5 times, and then in theory you're stuck with the 5th code. So if you're just going to play region 2 DVDs while you're in Ireland, you should be fine. But if you want to play both region 1 and region 2, that could be a problem. I think there might be a hack to get around this, but I don't know it offhand.
