Oh, so THAT'S why I always used to disable that stupid little "zones integrity whatsit" button application (?) thing -- because it is a bizarre internet security type doodad that, among other things, DOESN'T LET ME USE FTP CLIENTS.

Stupid. I am so stupid. Well, at least I finally figured that out.
