So. POTC:AWE. Yarrr.
Just my immediate reactions:
-The opening was a bit slow, I thought. Pretty, but slow. Took me a little while to get back into it. Maybe because I only saw the second one once, right when it came out, and I haven't really been in a POTC mindset in a while. But it picked up once they got into the Singapore pirate lord's lair.
-Jack's personal afterlife really, really amuses me. And the film went all weird and vaguely existential for a bit there, which was unexpected yet oddly refreshing.
-Elizabeth seeing her father floating quietly off to the underworld? Broke my heart just a wee bit. I knew Beckett was going to kill him, but I didn't expect the film to handle it in such a bittersweet, understated sort of way. Oh, <3.
-Speaking of death, ZOMG NORRINGTON. I was spoiled for that, but it still made me cry. Like, actually. And how wonderful/sad that he finally got to kiss Elizabeth, too.
-TIPPING THE SHIP OVER. WHAT.
-Love love love all the double-dealings and backstabbings going on. Oh, pirates. And about time Will soiled his precious noble honor, too.
-Tia Dalma for the win. Calypso!
-And her touching Davy Jones, and us getting one glimpse of the man he once was. Mmm. Nicely done.
-Back to the heartbreaking -- Bootstrap and Elizabeth, and realizing how much he's forgetting...
-I haven't really mentioned Jack, but we all know that he's made of awesome, right? Well, yeah, so he's still made of awesome.
-Elizabeth the pirate king! Well, we all knew who really wore the trousers in these movies already, so DUH.
-Fewer rum jokes. Thankfully.
-Final showdown also made of awesome. SHIPS DOING BATTLE IN MAELSTROM. I mean, really, they couldn't lose.
-I feel like there were things that vaguely annoyed me at the time, but I've forgotten them already, so whatever.
-How happy am I that Pintel & Ragatti's Navy counterparts finally got to be pirates? SO HAPPY.
-Was spoiled for Will becoming captain of Dutchman. Still thought it was awesome and so poetically perfect, ya know? You escort those dead souls to the underworld, Will. Suits his tortured sense of morality way better than piracy.
-I sincerely doubt that Elizabeth will live on one shag every ten years, but y'know, whatever.
-Drink up me hearties, yo ho!
-Scene after the credits? So lovely and perfect. Although, damn, was that one lucky day Elizabeth and Will spent on that island. Jeez.
Basically, I thought it was a fitting end to the trilogy, definitely worth seeing. Unspoilery advice to those who are planning on seeing it: Pirates movies have scenes after the credits. This one is no exception. Stick around, it's worth it.

All in all, though, it was a very good end to the trilogy. *nods* Well, except for the way Norrington died. Oh, James...

Date: 2007-05-27 03:00 pm (UTC)D'you want to know something funny? The DH and I were talking about POTC2 beforehand--I *knew* we had seen it, gone to the movies *and* rented it later on DVD. But I'm blessed if either of us could remember a *thing* that had happened in it! I remembered what Davy Jones looked like, and I seem to recall a scene with Elizabeth's father. But other than that, we both drew a total blank!
I don't think we'll have that problem with this one! Just the scene of Jack in the desert with the Pearl, and all those crabs, and the multiple Jacks talking to one another will stick for a long while. And did anyone else find the scene of Will and Elizabeth being married during a wild fight reminiscent of "The Princess Bride"--just that whole frantic, romantic silliness?

Elizabeth as the pirate king--THE BEST.
