*twitches impatiently*
Jul. 10th, 2007 02:46 amThe boyfriend and I have tickets to the midnight showing of OotP. It's weird, I'm more excited about this movie than about book 7. Possibly because movie 5 promises lots of Sirius and Remus, which book 7 certainly doesn't. (Well, no Sirius, anyway. Ought to be some Remus, although probably nowhere near as much as I'd like.) But also? I don't particularly want the series to end. It's more fun this way, the sense that the possibilities are endless. I don't want to be told what happens, I want to make it up for myself!
I realize that not everyone shares my love of ambiguous or unresolved "endings", and I know I'll still probably read the entirety of book 7 in the space of a day. But yeah. I don't like endings. Especially when I know at least one character I'm fond of is going to kick the bucket, and that's going to piss me off.
I've seen a couple of other people doing this, so...
My absolute top bet on Who Kicks It: Draco. He will redeem himself unequivocally in the process, probably, but he's the Regulus Black of the modern age (we've all figured out who RAB is, right?), and JKR likes her parallels. My guess is he'll go out destroying a Horcrux. And then all the Draco fans will curse JKR's name, and bitch about it for years.
Well, either that or he'll survive in order to Set An Example About Why Prejudices Are Bad, which is possible, but would irritate me quite a bit.
Also, someone we like has to die. (Well, Draco has his fair share of fans, but you know what I mean.) It might be Ron or Hermione, but I don't...that would be beyond cruel, really. Possible, though. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Neville, actually, but he's also got to take out Bellatrix (I'm about 99% positive on that), so maybe not.
Ginny will live. Harry will live. They will have many red-haired, bespectacled children. Just accept it. Hopefully, Harry's scar is indeed the last Horcrux, and he'll have to make some ginormous sacrifice in the end (giving up his magic, maybe?), but JKR is not going to kill him off. I kinda think it would make the most sense, but she's not.
Snape's a goner. He's also on the side of light, but that won't save him. Wormtail, similarly, is doomed. I hope to god he redeems himself in the process (doesn't he still owe Harry a life debt? yeah, thought so), or at the very least gets his own personal revenge on Voldie for treating him like crap all these years, but there's no way in hell he's surviving the book. Voldie dies too, incidentally. Shocker, I know.
Speaking of parallels, we haven't figured out who the Peter Pettigrew of Harry's generation is yet. But he (or she) is there. Someone will betray them. Someone in the D.A. Someone we're not expecting. I'd keep an eye on Colin Creevey, if I were Harry. (SERIOUSLY. I JUST REALIZED THIS TWO MINUTES AGO. CREEVEY IS JUST LIKE PETER. AUGH.)
At least one Weasley must die. Probably not Bill. Probably Percy. I think it would be fascinating, dramatically, if one of the twins kicks it, but I'm morbid and twisted that way. Arthur becomes Minister of Magic, probably. Molly continues to be nagging and annoying. Charlie continues to be noticeably absent.
Luna has the key to the solution of everything ever, because the magical flying whomprats tell her. Or something. Possibly she dies in the process, but she's going to be responsible for the discovery or destruction of at least one Horcrux all on her lonesome.
Remus and Tonks marry and have many multicolored wolf pups. That pairing continues to not make sense. Remus definitely lives, though, because he is The Survivor. Surviving is just what he does. Seriously, though, and not just because I will hurt people if he dies.
Dumbledore is still dead. Sirius is still dead. Cedric is still dead. James and Lily are still dead. There are no resurrections in Harry Potter World, except possibly as Inferi. Accept this and move on.
Expect at least 75% of the following to die tragically: Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnegan, Lavender Brown, Parvati Patil, Professors Sprout and Flitwick, Hagrid, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Insert Slytherin Here, Ernie Macmillan, Lee Jordan, Zacharias Smith, Creevey brothers, Cho Chang, etc. This is war. Remember how many of the original Order survived the first war? Dumbledore's Army is TOAST.
I had more speculations than the live-or-die stuff, but it's late and I've forgotten the rest of my grand theories. Alas.

Date: 2007-07-10 08:36 am (UTC)Weirdly, it hasn't really struck home until now that this is it: the last book, the end. Then the canon, such as it is, will be complete and the endless speculation will be over. Instead, we get rants how the wrong people were killed off and how it doesn't make sense at all...
(Though I seem to remember Rowling saying just recently that this might not be the end. I'm not sure how I feel about that.)

Date: 2007-07-10 03:56 pm (UTC)Also, I agree completely on Snape dying. And Peter. And definitely a Weasley. But not on Draco. Or on Neville. Hell, I'll buy one of the Triumvirate dying over Neville. *g*
Oh, book, why aren't you OUT yet????
