So [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes showed me a couple of episodes of Supernatural (the pilot and "Skin"), which, yes, I know, I am the last person on the planet to have seen any of this before.

Um. It's...all right? I mean, it's certainly not a bad show. Dean and Sam are very nifty, and I really like their interactions. But the episodes seem to be about 25% Dean and Sam being very amusing together, and 75% rather mediocre X-Files. And while that 25% is totally made of win, the other 75% is...not doing it for me. I mean, granted, I've only seen a couple of episodes, and I'm sure the show could grow on me yet, but...meh. So far, I'm really not getting why this is the fandom that ate my f-list.

OMG don't hurt me please.

I have no wish to harsh anyone's squee, though, so be merry with the show you love! Lord knows I wish the shows I am into had such wonderful fandoms.

But we also watched The History Boys, and oh my god, I have seen this movie like five times already and my love for it just grows exponentially every time. Oh, boys. And Dakin is totally my avatar for Marauders-era Sirius, by the by.

ETA: I must say, though, as an X-phile, it did give me quite a start to see Duane Barry in the Supernatural pilot. :) Filming in Vancouver, I'll bet that if I keep watching, I'll see a few more familiar faces among the extras.

I'd say the first half of Supernatural season 1 is decent, but nothing spectacular. After episode 10 or so (somewhere around the midway point) it starts getting INCREDIBLY addicting, and is really fun to watch. Don't judge a show based on a few episodes! Also, don't let all the hype spoil your expectations for the show -- it's one of those that really grows on you, I've noticed. :D

...I really need to see The History Boys, on that note.

It's true -- the Winchesters are always fantastic, but the storylines have some room to grow. After "Home," it becomes a compulsion.

But then, I'm also not coming at it as an X-Phile, which I'm gathering is like coming to Studio 60 after loving The West Wing and Sports Night, so.

I know better than to judge the whole show based on early episodes, and I'm sure it must get better, given the fanbase. It's just hard for me to get enthusiastic about watching any further right now, when I've got several other shows to work through (BSG, Heroes...) that DID pull me in from the start...

EVERYONE must see History Boys. It is made of awesome. ;)

I don't understand the Supernatural thing, either. I watched it once or twice and thought it was kind of lousy.

Yeah. I don't think it's bad, it just really doesn't do it for me.

*g* For every person I know who's been hooked, lines, and sinkered since the pilot, I know about three who took multiple episodes to get hooked. Personally, I watched the first season in order and didn't really go from "enjoyably entertained" to "dangerously obsessed" until Asylum, episode 10, though the "Oh, Dean" factor starting around Dead in the Water sustained me through some of the shakier early episodes.

I never watched X-Files (though I'm thinking of starting now because I'm told it shares many of SPN's best elements, and vice versa) but I'm told by those who would know that there are recognizable faces and places all over the place. The shows also share Kim Manners (speaking of Dead in the Water, that was the first SPN eisode he directed, at a lake that was used in at least one X-Files episode) and some writers.

I just don't know that I can sustain an interest long enough to keep watching, honestly. Ah, well, we'll see.

Oh, just glancing at the DVD set, I already caught Kim Manners (director) and John Shiban (writer) -- but Shiban's episodes of X-Files were always decent but nothing special, so that doesn't really draw me in. From what I've seen so far, SPN is more into the horror genre than X-Files generally was -- XF was more sci-fi/conspiracy, overall, though they did have more horror-based eps.

*g* Yeah, if it's really not doing it for you at all, don't push it! Just, if there is enough interest there to keep watching, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Interesting to hear that about Shiban. I loved all three of his season two episodes (Everybody Loves a Clown, Tall Tales, and Folsom Prison Blues) but his season one episodes were very mixed. A lot of people love The Benders to pieces and Scarecrow and Skin are in the good-not-great category, but Hookman is kind of amusingly bad, and Dead Man's Blood is the only episode of the show that's actually bored me silly, to the point that I've never even finished it.

Do you know [livejournal.com profile] ignipes at all? I don't believe she considers herself an X-Phile, but she's seen a lot more of it than I have and she gave me this take (http://sasha-davidovna.livejournal.com/219114.html?thread=716266#t716266) on the two shows after Tall Tales (which was an X-Files homage). Thought you might be interested to read it. (I got distracted by FNL, Bones, and BSG, but X-Files is still on my to-rent list.)

That is EXACTLY what the show is. LOL.

I just watch it and then run off and read really good Wincest. (The fic is better than the show. Huzzah.)
