OH MY GOSH IANTO.
Is pretty much my entire reaction to that. Like, okay, twelve thousand Jack/Ianto shippers just had all their fanon confirmed. I'm pretty sure I've READ that Ianto monologue in some form in at least ten fics. "Blip in time" and all. So cheesy, and yet SO MUCH LOVE. And of course Jack heard him, and oh god, I have such a massive kink for characters saying "I love you" without using those three words, so pretty much, yeah, IANTO with a side of OH JACK right at the end.
Also? My heart is going to shatter into a million tiny pieces. I have heard NO SPOILERS in this regard about series three, so this is pure speculation on my part (and speculation that's been making its way around fandom, as well). So, again, this is not a spoiler, because it has no basis in anything I've seen or read about Children of Earth, okay? PURE speculation.
But after that radio play in particular? I'm now about 80% convinced that Ianto is going to die in "Children of Earth". If not more so. And that's going to be the end of me and Torchwood. Owen was tough. Tosh was heartbreaking. Ianto? I won't be able to handle any more canon without Ianto. I just can't. But I do know that Russel T Davies is that much of a bastard -- he loves winding us up and then breaking our hearts, you can tell from the interviews, and this isn't meant as a criticism, he's bloody brilliant at it -- and, god, I hope I'm wrong, but...yeah.
They're setting it up for Ianto to die. I mean, too many standard narrative devices foreshadowing this have been utilized to ignore. And that is going to SUCK.
...unless, of course, they subvert it at the last minute, which there is absolutely precedent for, particularly with this show, and I'm hoping against hope will prove true. Also, it wouldn't be particularly smart, from a practical standpoint -- when you've already killed off 40% of your primary characters in one fell swoop, you really don't want to immediately bump off one of the remaining THREE. Not until you've had at least a good season to develop some replacements. Hence only 80% convinced. But oh god, I am currently terrified. Because I love Ianto beyond all reason, and I really love this fandom to bits, and I really don't want to abandon any of my Torchwood/Who WIPs or germinating plotbunnies, but if Ianto dies, they'll be too badly jossed for me to complete. And I really don't want to see what the Jack/Ianto fandom does to itself after. Just, no, there's enough badfic already, this will be too much.
Gah, I'm not usually this much of a doomsdayer. But I'm too goddamned scared right now. Oh, Ianto. IANTO.

Date: 2009-07-04 05:21 pm (UTC)The radio plays are nothing spectacular. "The Dead Line" is only really worth it for the shippiness - but oh my GOD the shippiness.

Date: 2009-07-04 02:01 pm (UTC)As for writing in this fandom, I'd finish the things I've promised to finish, if that happens, but then I'm not sure that I could write any more. I try not to write badfic, and I worry enormously that if I tried to write Jack and Ianto after Ianto died, it would turn into that.
Not thrilled with RTD and his attitude towards 'fat fan-girls', just now.

RTD -- man, I dunno. I love his creations, but I often completely disagree with his take on his own characters, going back to Queer as Folk. Haven't heard that particular quote, but it doesn't surprise me, sadly.
