that's the thing about gloves, sir.
Sep. 13th, 2009 11:03 pmI've been rewatching a lot of S1 Torchwood, for the first time -- actually, most episodes of the show as a whole, I'd only watched once up until quite recently. (Ironic, I guess, that I've reread a lot of my favorite TW fics a hell of a lot more often than I've rewatched my favorite episodes.) But anyway. Tonight it was "They Keep Killing Suzie", and oh MAN, that last scene is way more ominous and foreshadowy if you take into account the fact that Ianto was originally supposed to get the zombie plotline instead of Owen. That was a bit creepifying.
...love that scene to bits, of course, but also -- seriously, weirdest way to establish an onscreen relationship in a TV show ever, yeah? Though this time through, I'm more convinced that this was not leading up to their first time. I'm still on the fence about whether or not they'd been screwing around pre-Cyberwoman -- I think you could read it either way -- but the stopwatch scene just feels like it's building upon an established sexual relationship. It's not a first (or a first-time-since-Lisa, if that's your background of choice). It still has a sense of newness about it -- Ianto's hesitation just before he makes the suggestion, Jack's little double-take when he catches on -- and I'll buy that it might be the first time Ianto's propositioned Jack, rather than the other way round. But they just seem a little too comfortable with the banter of it, and the smug little looks they shoot each other...I dunno. It just feels like they've got that baseline level of familiarity of have-already-seen-each-other-naked, with a side of the but-still-have-plenty-to-discover-so-let's-get-to-it of a relatively recent relationship.
I'd almost forgotten how fascinating a character Suzie is. I'm reluctantly working on a bit of a five things fic with Suzie -- reluctant because it's not one of the fics I'd LIKE to be working on, but denying the plotbunny for several weeks didn't kill it, so -- and rewatching this helped a lot. She's a great villain. I wish we could've seen more of her.
In other ficcishness, a song came up on my iPod today that hit me hard -- there's a lyric of it that I've been trying to use as a fic title for quite literally several years now, always thought it would fit something in HP fandom, but never quite made it work. And then sort of forgot about it. But hearing it now, I realized it's exactly perfect for the CoE fix-it, and that made me absurdly happy. I like finding the right titles. They tend to bring themes into sharper focus for me while I'm writing. (I don't always figure out the title until after the fic is finished, and those tend to be the ones I'm far less happy with, in the end.) So, that. I hammered out the plot outline a bit more, too, though I've still got a lot to figure out. Still, progress.
Man, it's nice to get a day entirely to myself every now and then. I should do this again sometime. Ah, well.

Date: 2009-09-14 05:06 am (UTC)Ooh, Suzie fic! I await it eagerly.
It's funny how finding the right title can perform some weird alchemy to make a story click. I had a very similar experience with a song title and a post-CoE plotbunny.

Hey, you have a post-CoE plotbunny? Awesome. I look forward to reading that. :D

Wait no, he mentions once that he has a dad. NM.
