fics and vids and Yuletide and 2010...
Jan. 1st, 2010 03:30 pmHAPPY NEW YEAR! Oh please let 2010 be a better year for everyone than 2009 was.
Yuletide reveal! To no one's surprise, I was responsible for Eight Candles, a History Boys Posner/Scripps fic. It was very amusing to discover that my assignment was not only the same fandom but the same pairing as last year's Yuletide. Fortunately, it's a fandom and pairing I'm quite fond of, and it was fun to write a Hanukkah-ish fic.
And the yearly fanwork round-up for 2009! So for me, this was the year of Torchwood and vidding. I completed about as many vids this year as fics, and that's weird. I guess I should consider myself a vidder as much as a writer now. So I'm combining both fics and vids into one round-up of creative works, because, yeah.
Fics:
five times Death stopped for Jack (and once he didn't), Torchwood(/Doctor Who)
falling faintly, Band of Brothers
And Indeed There Will Be Time, Torchwood
Telepathy for Beginners, Torchwood
one by one my tales are told, Torchwood
Eight Candles, History Boys
Vids:
Chiron Beta Prime, Doctor Who
Street Light Halos, Band of Brothers
The Boxer, Band of Brothers
What It Is, Merlin
Spaceman, Doctor Who/Torchwood
Book of Days, Doctor Who
END OF THE YEAR ROUND-UP
Favorite(s) of the batch: And Indeed There Will Be Time, hands down. I'm still fairly boggled that I managed to write all of that. I'd never participated in a Big Bang challenge before, and the fact that I wound up churning out more than twice the minimum word count, just, WHAT. And, really, we all write what we want to read, and this was where I went all out. Long and plotty and timey-wimey, check. Historical research, check. Team shenanigans, check. OTP, check. I still reread this one.
Best of the batch: Spaceman is a vid that just worked. I spent a year teaching myself how to vid, and that was the end result -- and it all just flowed together so quickly and easily. I'm pretty proud of it. (In writing, And Indeed There Will Be Time, again.)
Most underappreciated by the universe: Eh, nothing is underappreciated. I didn't get that feeling at all this year. Okay, so BoB is a much smaller fandom than the Whoniverse, so the fic and vids got less feedback, but who the hell cares?
Most fun towrite create: Book of Days. Easily. It's not a great vid, but clipping all of those awesome women being awesome just filled me with such glee, you don't even know.
Sexiest fic: I don't really write sex scenes. But I have a bit of a kink for understated emotional hook-ups, in case you hadn't noticed, and I'm pretty happy with the Jack/Ianto reunion at the end of And Indeed There Will Be Time.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: Nothing really this year. Although coming up with all the deaths in five times Death stopped for Jack (and once he didn't) was more fun than it should have been. Particularly the death by pterodactyl. Sorry, Jack.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I don't slip into Ianto's head easily, which is odd because he's definitely the character on Torchwood I most closely identify with. But I need to for the post-CoE fic I'm working on, and Telepathy for Beginners wound up being the writing exercise I used to get myself in there. The first scene in that was originally a snippet intended for the CoE fic, but worked better in this format.
Hardest fic to write: I think And Indeed There Will Be Time goes without saying. That was a PROCESS. My poor artists never got to see a full draft, because I'd write up to the draft minimum word count and then just give them the rest as an outline. SORRY SORRY SORRY. But I've got three current WIPs that really should earn this -- more so because clearly, I have not finished them yet. In particular, there's a Rose fic that I've been working on for more than a year, and damn well intend to finish in 2010. It wins this category hands down.
Biggest disappointment: The fact that I haven't finished those three WIPs yet! Gah. Um, I guess Chiron Beta Prime -- great, fun idea, but I simply wasn't a good enough vidder to do it justice. (It was my second vid ever.) But I learned a lot about vidding from the process of making it, so I'm not really all that disappointed with it.
Biggest surprise: The Boxer. I have no idea where that came from. BoB in general took me by surprise this year -- it's not my primary fandom, but I fell deeply in love with it, and it's awesome. I'm only sorry I didn't create more in this fandom.
Most telling fic: And Indeed There Will Be Time shows most about my narrative preferences, but Eight Candles is the most revealing about me, I think. Because I'd already written two Posner/Scripps fics from Scripps's POV (he's the character I most closely identify with in the fandom), I decided it was time to tackle Posner for this year's Yuletide assignment. The entry point I used to get in his head was his relationship with Judaism, which is something I have conflicted feelings about in my own life. But from there, I found...perhaps a little too much of myself in Posner. I'm not altogether comfortable with that, much as I love him as a character. Anyway. That fic has a lot of me in it.
What's next? I will finish my three WIPs! One is a Merlin fic, Morgana/Gwen, which I'd gotten about 3/4 finished with when the second series started, and has been on hold since. I haven't seen any but the first episode of series 2 yet, but I know I should watch the rest before finishing the fic, because I'm pretty sure it'll affect how I should be portraying Morgana in particular. I just kind of don't want to. Bad fan. Then there's the Rose fic, which is AU from S3 Who on, and a major Torchwood crossover. Because I really want the kickass Rose we saw in Turn Left to get up to mad shenanigans with team Torchwood, basically. (It's also technically a sequel to Life in Technicolor, though only in terms of plot, not stylistically.) And lastly, the post-CoE fic that ate my brain, of course, which is going to be a MONSTER -- currently at 15,000 words and only a quarter of the way finished, oh hell, what is WRONG with me.
And I have a funny feeling more vids will sprout up. They're rarely planned in advance, they just HIT me and demand to be completed. We'll see.
Here's to a more creative 2010!

Date: 2010-01-01 10:46 pm (UTC)I think I may steal your 'roundup' format for a later post of my own, though The Divine Whatever knows when that'll be.
Heh. Some thief I'd be - announcing my plans to steal something before I did it. Darwin Award for me, yes.
*hugs* Have a fantastic 2010! ♥
