I finally caved and called in sick to work today, after having actually been sick for the past week and a half. Except today the exciting new symptom is feeling like I've got a golf ball lodged in my throat that hurts like hell to swallow around, plus parents visiting this afternoon and a show to run tonight, so. Sick it is. I don't want to see a doctor, because I've already done the clinic thing this week and she was all "yeah, so you've got a cold, take some sudafed" -- which, really, not worth the absurdly high copay that comes with my really crappy insurance coverage.

Seriously, does anyone know how to get rid of invisible rhinovirus-related golf balls lodged in one's throat? Advil cuts the pain down somewhat. Tea with honey accomplishes fuck-all, and I don't even like tea. But I'd like to be able to eat at some point today, and that involves swallowing, and right now swallowing water is painful, so.

Also, really unfortunate colds should not be allowed to last a week and a half. With symptoms that switch off every couple of days, which makes treatment hard to qualify. At least the whole-head-stuffed-up-can't-breathe-or-hear stage passed after the first few days, and I'd feel more or less fine right now except for the golf ball. But, y'know, GOLF BALL, ow.

Be careful! That "golf ball," as you describe it, are most likely your swollen glands which can get infected. You probably need antibiotics at this point. If you have, or start to get, a fever then I'd suggest you get yourself to the clinic again for a perscription. As for the swallowing, nothing really touches that kind of pain, I know! Take care and rest when you can, it's the best medicine. :)

All I know is it's not the lymph nodes, because I know where those are and what they feel like swollen. Ugh. No fever, at least. :/

Well, no fever is a good thing! At least that's something. :D I once had wicked throat pain with no other synptoms. I went to a clinic that time and I'm sure the doc thought I was drug seeking because there was no visible sign to explain it. It hurt so much to swallow but I never found out why. It didn't last too long. Hope u feel better soon. :)

Blick, I hate that pain worst of all, it's just miserable. *hugs* Man, something really seems to be going around. May your lymph nodes unswell soon!

It's not even my lymph nodes! Those are on the sides, and I've had strep before and I know what they feel like swollen. Whatever this gland is, it's right in the front where my adam's apple would be if I were a dude. STUPID THING. :(

Can you speak okay? It could be an inflammation of the larynx.

I'm really looking forward to the future, when we have friends who are doctors.

Maybe try gargling with warm water and salt? That sometimes helps for me when my throat is really sore. When I had mono, my throat was SEVERELY sore, and the doctor had me gargle with Karo syrup, I think. I only vaguely remember this so you might want to google it...

Hope you feel better!

In the UK you can get over the counter antiseptic, anti-inflammatory stuff in a bottle with a long nozzle that you use to spray it directly onto the back of your throat. It's amazing.
