Now I've seen Inception twice in the past week, and hope to add a third viewing soon. And don't get me starting on all the fic I've been mainlining. This is some serious crack, guys. As someone else noted somewhere, Inception is the perfect universe for fandom -- it's all about worldbuilding, a story about storytelling and the power of suggestion and creating worlds in which anything is possible (sort of) and everyone who watches it can take away something completely different and everyone's individual perception is correct every time, and no one can even say for sure what even happened. Brain!porn, basically. (And incidental suit!porn, nngk.)
Simultaneously, I'm still all a-glee over the BBC Sherlock. And this may not be obvious, but I have a bulletproof kink for good crossovers. (Seriously. I will read good crossovers regardless of whether I know both canons. I don't even sort of care, I love that shit SO HARD. Hence my abiding love for the broader Whoniverse, where everything crosses over itself in canon.) But I digress.
Basically, I badly need someone to write the crossover where the Inception team gets hired to do an extraction on some really twisty-minded clever bastard, and Eames is all, "So I went to school with this Sherlock bloke, no really hear me out--" and Sherlock and John are hauled in for a consult and of course Sherlock totally hijacks the whole dream-heist process and AWESOMENESS ENSUES. Internets, get on this.
Or the AU Torchwood crossover, where team Torchwood is a rival extraction team. Jack's the Extractor, Ianto's his Point Man (of COURSE), Tosh is the Architect (she would be so brilliant, wouldn't she?), Owen's the Chemist, and Gwen is the Forger. (No, hear me out. Eames has his own certain style, but I think Gwen's driving need to understand and empathize with others would make her an awesome Forger.) I have no idea what the plot would be, but I feel it would be excellent. Ianto and Arthur would bond over matters sartorial and bicker about who knows more about everything. Okay, yeah, basically I just want a fic with Arthur and Ianto in.
And now for some completely unrelated Top Fives.
Road trip songs, via
tardis_stowaway
1. "Alice's Restaurant", Arlo Guthrie. That shit goes on for like twenty minutes, and it still makes me fall all over myself laughing. Which, actually, maybe not so good while driving. But still.
2. "Oh What A World", Rufus Wainwright. BLISS. Why am I always on a plane or a fast train, oh what a world my parents gave me...
3. "American Pie", Don McLean. OKAY I LIKE THE CLASSICS, WHATEVER. Another one that's like ten minutes long, and yes I can damn well sing along all the way through.
4. "Across the Universe", Beatles or any cover artist. Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes that call me on and on across the universe...
5. "Ikea", Jonathan Coulton. Because it makes me so happy, and I have no idea why.
Eclectic playlist is eclectic, I guess. You should see the full playlist I listen to most regularly, it's all over the place.
Random things that make me happy, via
kalliopeia
1. My aforementioned "mood enhancer" playlist. It's a completely random-ass collection of songs that make me GRIN. Which makes commuting on the Metro far more pleasant, let me tell you.
2. Good long plotty team!fic in any of my fandoms of choice. Team Torchwood, team Inception, you get the picture. LONG and PLOTTY being crucial. I love that shit. Bonus side of my OTP also nice.
3. Falling in love with a new fandom. You know, that honeymoon period where all the fic is new and you devour rec lists like crazy and everything is new and shiny and wonderful. See: above post re: Inception and Sherlock.
4. BAKED GOODS. This is self-evident.
5. The Zone of creating, when you're writing so fast to keep up with the thoughts tumbling around and you emerge five hours later with no idea where the time went. Also applies to vidding, for me.
Stories I've written that I'm most proud of, via
zephyrprince
1.And Indeed There Will Be Time, Torchwood. Last year's Big Bang, and the longest fic I'd ever written at that point. It basically included every fic element I love best, and I think it all holds together really well.
2. lovely branches, Doctor Who. Because it's a fairy tale about Amelia Pond and the big Bad Wolf. I love fairy tales, and I love Amy, and I love Rose. It was inevitable.
3. The Years of the Rat, Harry Potter. Haven't reread this in a while, and I'm very done with that fandom, but man, I got Peter Pettigrew and how he went from Marauder to villain, and I wish JKR had actually bothered going into that a bit herself.
4. The Ivory Horn, His Dark Materials. I've mentioned my love of crossovers, right? This was my surprise!crossover fic, and I'm very, very pleased with it, still, even if I did sort of break my childhood in the process of writing it.
5. To Her Coy Mistress, Doctor Who. Whoniverse rare!pair femslash for
tricksterquinn! That was so much fun. And timey-wimeyness out the whazoo, man, I needed some very complicated flow charts to write this one. :D
