I'm starting to think sleep is a mythological construct. Or possibly reality is, and I'm just dreaming. I'm at the state or tired where I'm not sure I can tell the difference anymore. Possibly it doesn't matter.
Anyways, the show I'm stage managing is opening tonight. And I don't usually put blatant RL plugs here, because it can so easily link my fannish identity to my real one, but I don't even care. This show is good. It's very good. It's part of a conversation on race and identity that I think people in this fannish community will grok far better than most of the people I know in "real life". And our production is bloody hilarious.
It features four of the most talented and devastatingly funny actresses I've ever had the pleasure of seeing on a stage, and it breaks my fucking heart that members of the broader media fandom communities will probably never know their names or see their work, because they are Asian and female and work in regional theater and will probably never have a noticeable role in popular film or TV. It makes me wish I were a producer rather than a stage manager, because I would work my ass off to get these ladies the recognition they deserve -- if only anyone were writing scripts with roles for them.
Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, by Young Jean Lee, at the Studio Theatre. Running through the end of October. If you're in the Washington DC area, please consider checking it out. It's smart, it's funny, it's biting, it's more than a little disturbing, and it's wildly creative. And it deserves to find its audience.
