Dec. 23rd, 2002 07:35 pmJust saw Gangs of New York. Okay, kids, let's count the Oscars:
1. Best Picture
2. Best Director - Martin Scorsese
3. Best [Supporting?] Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
4. Best Score - Howard Shore (again!)
5. Best Cinematography
6. Best Editing
7. Best Sound
And a whole bunch of other awards whose names I've forgotten. Makeup/Costumes will probably go elsewhere (my bet is TTT, unless they think last year's was enough), as will any acting awards Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win. Although, hell, I'm willing to give him all of them. I don't think it deserves any kind of special effects awards, either. But, okay, yes, this movie kicks LotR's ass into the ground. I never expected TTT to win, but at least now I know it's losing to a movie that deserves it.
Now we need to sit Peter Jackson down to watch this movie, and take a few notes. If RotK delivers HALF the dramatic and emotional impact of GoNY, it stands a chance at next year's Oscars. But this year? Gangs of New York. Period. That's it, the Oscar race is officially over, we can fast-forward to December 2003 now...
