Winter Soldier question

Okay, yes, Bucky Barnes has taken over my life, I admit it. Second viewing of Winter Soldier impressed me much more than the first, for some damn reason, possibly because I'd already become mildly obsessed with Bucky. And I badly need decent source for the vid bunny that's eating my brain.
BUT ANYWAY.
Continuity question: What is the Winter Soldier's mission objective when he encounters Steve/Nat/Sam in the middle of the movie? You know, the fight scene that ends with Steve recognizing him. Because the first time we see him, his mission is to take out Fury. Got that. And at the end, his mission is to take out Steve -- at least presumably, since he doesn't seem overly concerned with protecting the three helicarriers. (And then there's the whole "You're my friend!" "You're my MISSION." exchange, so.) But why is he wreaking havoc on the bridge? If it was just to take out Sitwell to protect HYDRA's secrets, then mission accomplished within like the first five seconds, well done you, bye now. But then there's a whole protracted fight sequence. I assumed his mission was already to eliminate Steve at that point, and he failed in it, but then in the conversation with Pierce, he asks -- "The man on the bridge. Who was he?" Which makes NO SENSE if eliminating Steve was his mission -- he'd already know SOMETHING, at least. Or he'd refer to him by something other than "the man on the bridge", which makes it sound like Steve's presence was totally incidental to his plans. (And Pierce replies, "you met him earlier this week", which, again, you'd think he'd know already if Steve was his target.) So what the hell was his mission objective? I suppose it could have been Natasha -- he does seem more focused on her for the first part of that sequence -- but he gives up and turns his attention to Steve really quickly. (Maybe because the memories are already pushing through?)
Any thoughts?
Yes, I'm writing a damn Winter Soldier fic. LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ON THE INTERNET. So sue me.

Date: 2014-04-18 12:41 am (UTC)I think he was asking in a non-mission sense - he knows "one of my targets" and maybe basic mission-relevant information, but he suddenly needs to know more. He might not have been told Steve's name or cape name or anything but the basics.
