I haven't been posting much lately because I'm too busy/tired to fandom these days. (Apart from reading epic-length fics on my phone in bed. I've been doing a LOT of that.) So! Meme!

Comment with the title of one of my fics and a number (or more than one of either) and I'll witter egomanically about:
1) how I came up with the idea
2) something I deleted
3) my favorite bit
4) something I struggled to write
5) what the writing process was like
6) how I thought people would respond
7) how people actually responded
8) something I wish I’d done differently
9) something I think I did right

Date: 2015-03-24 01:00 am (UTC)1) I came up with the idea roughly five minutes after CoE ended. Because my entire brain basically noped the fuck out. It took me a year to actually finish writing it (which, in fairness, 63k words), but I knew I had to Bring Ianto Back in a way that still jived with canon for both Torchwood and Doctor Who (and I knew that it would end with him LEAVING with Jack, not Jack coming back to Torchwood). Paul Simon's song "Further To Fly" is one I've mined for titles more than once, and I'd actually had "Rose of Jericho" in mind as a title that needed a fic for a while already, so that came together nicely.
4) I tend to struggle with action sequences/logistics, mostly because I fret over what I don't know (and can't easily research), and what I don't know is how a special ops group would run an op. I got stuck in the middle for rather a while, trying to work out a way to actually break Ianto out of the facility without being super boring and technical. I'm not sure I succeeded, but at least I got past that bit. Also, all of the flashbacks in the last chapter were written in a frantic rush the week before the Big Bang posting deadline, whoops.
9) Something I did right -- I really fucking like the ending I chose for it. That neither Jack nor Ianto can ever really go back to Torchwood. And also that Ianto chooses to be with Jack because he wants it, not because he can't live without him.
And also John Hart. I REALLY LIKED WRITING JOHN HART OKAY. :D

Date: 2015-03-24 01:58 am (UTC)One of the things that I love about this story is how you made it all make sense in-universe, and keeping track of all the story lines and how they converge.
I love the ending. I love how Jack doesn't think he deserves Ianto, but Ianto deserves Jack, and they both have to move forward because they've both been broken but there's this sense that they're going to get through it together.
JOHN HART IS THE BEST OMG!

Date: 2015-03-25 11:28 pm (UTC)1) Getting the prompt for Yuletide! Except really the idea came from me being like "Gallifreyan outfits look like penises" and then coming up with the title on the spot, and then having to fill in everything else that was accidentally erotic about Doctor Who from there.
2) I don't think I deleted anything! I had a few bullet points of Things That Need To Be Included, like the Doctor Who/Harry Potter actor overlaps and Michael thinking about penises and Katie failing at puns, and then it all flowed very stream-of-consciousness from there.
4) Getting from Point A to Point B by way of Point Epsilon was a bit of a challenge, as was circling back to parallel universes. But seriously, I wrote this fucker pretty fast, I didn't struggle with anything in particular.
5) A lot of cackling to myself, mostly. Let's just say that if Michael and Katie had an improbably love child, she would be my brain. ;)
