seeking new fandoms!

Lately I've been going down the rabbit hole of old fandoms, and luxuriating in (re-)reading fics for OTPs past, mostly in fandoms I never properly touched as a writer. Went through a Man from UNCLE spree a few weeks ago; that somehow transitioned into Inception and now 007/Q. Apart from the white-boys-fucking monotony (and always one dark- and one fair-haired, wtf, why is it ALWAYS that? asks the fangirl who is just as guilty of writing all those OTPs herself), it's been fun swimming through the cloak-and-dagger type fandoms. I'm not sure why I never landed properly in any of these -- they hit most of my favorite narrative tropes, and provide the sort of plotty adventure framework that I most enjoy as both reader and writer.

I guess Man from UNCLE (the reboot film, not the original series, which I still haven't seen) was too short-lived a fandom to ensnare me, and while 007 is an insanely long-running franchise, it's also less active in terms of fandom -- at least in my fannish circles, anyway. And I likely would have tipped into Inception more solidly back in the day if X-Men: First Class hadn't slammed through fandom like a freaking hurricane within a few months of its release. No regrets on that score, though I did orphan a couple of Inception WIPs on my drive that I really, really wish I'd managed to finish before jumping full tilt back into X-Men fandom.

ANYWAY. That's a very roundabout way of getting to: What fandoms are you all excited about these days? Where's the really good fic at right now? What do you really wish more people were talking about? I'm current on the MCU nmovies (but found Infinity War deeply underwhelming and am not really looking forward to Endgame, so that's soured me a bit), but the only TV I'm keeping up with right now is Doctor Who (yay great new cast and amazing Jodie Whittaker, wish the writing were better for them) and The Good Place (flawless perfection). So I'm feeling very out of the loop.

My two new happy places are Venom and Voltron: Legendary Defender. Venom is all about the delicious love story between a boy and his alien. Lots of new fic, lots of monster-fucking. I'm mostly reading here.

Voltron: Legendary Defender is the new Netflix version. My pimp post is here. Basically it's fun, teamy goodness with a surprising amount of depth. Fic is all over the place, especially since the juggernaut pairing is not the one I would have pegged, but that's fandom for you.

Fair warning the fandom is wanky as hell, and there's lots of people upset about how they handled the LGBT representation (not gross, just underwhelming), which I think while not invalid, their hopes were set way too high for a major kids show property (I might be a little jaded coming out of The 100 fandom, which was way worse, and exhausted from the same conversations so I stick with what I love and fic the rest). I'm happy to go into detail if you want. I mostly chat about it with three other people.

Other than those two, I've been revisiting Avatar the Last Airbendeer as I've just started a rewatch, and Star Wars which is new-to-me.

Doctor Who, for sure - lots of surprising femslash now that we have Yaz and Thirteen.

If you missed Black Sails (it was massive for a while) I'd suggest stopping there and checking stuff out - there's a breadth of choices, lots of pairings, some really good historical gen.

I'm currently in Person of Interest, which is closed canon now, but had a bit of a renaissance last year with a fic exchange and a big bang, so if that was ever your cup of tea, I would suggest checking that tag out?

I have not found a way to watch BBC's Les Mis, but Les Mis was my first ever fandom and I am looking forward to seeing a revival of it. Fingers crossed.

I also feel like I should watch the current doctor who.

I still go back and re-read SGA fic :)

I recently moved by AO3 email to an email address that I have on my laptop, so I get kudos emails there. I've been reading some of my old fic and thinking, 'hey, I can story'.

Kaydee, I just for the first time watched your Winter Soldier Hymn of Acxiom vid and I am DEAD.

OMG Check, Please! is pretty toxic as a fandom, but I can't seem to quit it. There are still songs that light up my brain with certain characters, and I find myself writing.

As far as media goes, I'm into The Good Place and Brooklyn 99 and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and KJ Charles's romance novels. But I'm not sure which ones are going to shake down into collaborative, transformative fandom for me vs. a thing I intensely enjoy but don't really want to join fandom in working with.

Guardian is a Chinese supernatural cop drama which has one of the best meet cutes I have ever seen in its first episode, and the central relationship is *incredibly* romantic and compelling. It's based on a m/m novel, and because of Chinese broadcasting rules the creators of the show had to tone down the romance a bit... but they definitely didn't tone it down much, and the actors are 100% on board with it.

The fandom on Dreamwidth is quite active, and there's some great fic (my bookmarks, which are all recs, are here)
