HUGE thanks to
ldmoonflower for giving me the heads up.
From today's Newsday interview with Neil Patrick Harris:
Q: Are you still [going to do "Assassins"]?
A: From all I hear, it's planned to go into Studio 54 at the beginning of next year, with Joe Mantello directing. If it happens, I would be involved. I would play the balladeer, who is kind of the voice of hope and reason. Then at the end I turn into Lee Harvey Oswald, which is fun, because originally, two different actors played those parts.
You have to understand, I am an insane Sondheim FREAK, and Assassins is one of my favorite Sondheim shows of all time. PLUS, about a year ago, I was going through this whole my-god-if-I-ever-could-direct-Assassins phase, and I babbled to everyone about how the Balladeer and Oswald should be played by the same person, because symbolism and interesting shit and all that. AND IT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING! Dude! DUDE! I so totally called this! ::bounces off walls:: And Neil Patrick Harris! Who has this incredible, beautiful Broadway-type voice! And...and...::spontaneously combusts from the coolness of it all::
(Yes, underneath this whole LotR slasher facade, I'm actually more of a Broadway nut than anything else. Please indulge.)
