I just spent more than an hour doing research online. What's worse, I think I'm actually going to have to go to the library and take out a book or two.

You have to understand, I'm not in school, and when I'm not in school, I don't do research. It's very simple.

So, how do all you lovely people who write historical AUs manage it without going crazy?

I've barely even started the thing, and it's already eating my brain. Heaven help us.

Oooh, 15th century Venice. That sounds even more obscure than 1901 Cleveland / Buffalo. Coooool. Good luck.

1901 Cleveland/Buffalo? Does this have something to do with the McKinley assassination?

Date: 2003-08-20 10:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kaydeefalls.livejournal.com
Yes and no. It's based around Emma Goldman's speech in Cleveland in 1901 - the one that supposedly inspired Czolgosz to assassinate McKinley - and Czolgosz has a couple of cameo appearances, but it's really supposed to focus on the anarchist movement and the working-class people involved.

If I can ever get it off the ground, that is. My grand scheme involves a longer and more complex storyline than I'm used to writing.

grarghAU...

Ahahaha I'm starting to feel really guilty 'cause I just figured out what has to happen to one of my main boys at the end for the whole thing to be logical, and it's not very nice. Whoops.

Eee! Historical AU! *bounce*

If there's anything I (and my student card, which gives me access to a number of electronic journals) can do, do feel free to shout.

Hmmm...

Of course, I'll probably have a student card myself by the time I actually finish this thing (if ever!). But I appreciate the offer. ::grins::

Yup. Just starting to experience this phenomenon. Current ETA for historical AU: 2010. Although this is probably a good thing.

Ugh. College. Don't even remind me how much actual research I'll be doing in a month. (I've decided that it doesn't count as research if you're actually interested in it. ::nods primly::

Anarchists in 1901 Cleveland/Buffalo, thus effectively combining two of my eccentric history!obsessions: Emma Goldman (leading anarchist of her day) and presidential assassinations (President McKinley was shot and killed by an anarchist in 1901).

Ahahaha randomness and obscurity in historical AU form! And Billeh, who unexpectedly switched places with Dom two pages in and decided to be the main character. Meh?

Six pages and barely even started. Send help.

I can't go into a lot of detail, because it's the ex-fandom monster fic from hell that's taken 9 years so far to finish, but...let me put it this way: I love the research, love the history, can get totally & happily engrossed in the research & history and forget all about the story. I'm never EVER doing it again unless it's for a short story. It can eat your life right up, and you might not even mind until it's too late.

Oh, man, do I ever know what you mean. I started reading completely unrelated essays that sort of branched out from my topic, and two hours later... look, Ma, no fic! ::smacks forehead::
