HA! TREES!

Excerpt from an interview with Dom and Billy, shamelessly stolen from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] andraste_oz's transcript.

Interviewer: Can I ask why you have 'trees' written on your hand?
Dominic Monaghan: That is a very good question. Billy and I realized that these press tours are kind of a stage for us to talk about whatever issues we think are important. And with this movie, being Merry and Pippin up a tree, and a tree eventually doing his bit to save mankind, we think that it would be a good thing to get into the world's psyche through the media that we need to save the trees.
You know, Tolkien was talking about this in the 1940s and it doesn't seem to have been a problem that's been addressed. I've been hanging out with people who work for Greenpeace in Los Angeles. They were telling me that the size of eleven football pitches of rain forest are destroyed every single day. And don't come back. This is something that will eventually end up killing us. And ending the world because the forests are the lungs of the world. They're what help us breathe and we seem hell-bent on this war for oil which, at the end of the day, is a war for money and power. And I think it's ridiculous when the real things that we should be concerning ourselves with are continuing to live on this planet. And it won't happen -- it just simply won't happen if the forests are destroyed.
At the moment, there's something going through New Line which -- fingers crossed -- will happen and involve planting trees on every single continent in the world. Through the Lord of the Rings movie. We'd like to get people concerned with preserving their environment. I think it's the most important issue today. Otherwise there won't be a world to save.

Trees = Wood = Dom + Lij 4eva? Uh-uh. Nope. Didn't think so. And please don't try to tell me that this interview is all a huge PR cover-up scheme. Occam's Razor, guys. The most likely explanation is probably correct...

Just saw Gangs of New York. Okay, kids, let's count the Oscars:
1. Best Picture
2. Best Director - Martin Scorsese
3. Best [Supporting?] Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
4. Best Score - Howard Shore (again!)
5. Best Cinematography
6. Best Editing
7. Best Sound
And a whole bunch of other awards whose names I've forgotten. Makeup/Costumes will probably go elsewhere (my bet is TTT, unless they think last year's was enough), as will any acting awards Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win. Although, hell, I'm willing to give him all of them. I don't think it deserves any kind of special effects awards, either. But, okay, yes, this movie kicks LotR's ass into the ground. I never expected TTT to win, but at least now I know it's losing to a movie that deserves it.

Now we need to sit Peter Jackson down to watch this movie, and take a few notes. If RotK delivers HALF the dramatic and emotional impact of GoNY, it stands a chance at next year's Oscars. But this year? Gangs of New York. Period. That's it, the Oscar race is officially over, we can fast-forward to December 2003 now...

It appears that there has been a bit of kerfluffling in Fandom Land. Somehow, I doubt that my one lousy Trees!post inspired it all, but I can't help but feel vaguely guilty all the same. In the spirit of [livejournal.com profile] uluviel, a disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER: This post may, in some twisted unearthly light, somehow appear to be an attempt to somehow refute the entirety of the existence of Domlijah by theoretically disagreeing with a single minute aspect of the theoretical proof of the theoretical D/E OTP. This was not the intention. It is, instead, continuing proof that fandom is fucking funny. Read at your own risk.

Calm down, people. I'm just amusing myself, here. I'm not trying to offend anyone, or discredit anyone's beliefs. I just happened to notice an interview which happened to support MY beliefs. It certainly doesn't prove or disprove anything. Heck, I'm still a Domlijah shipper, I just don't think "trees" has anything to do with the theoretical existence of their relationship. Damn. This fandom could take the fun out of anything.
