So so so I received the book Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell for Christmas and started reading it over winter break but didn't finish it and brought it back to college with me and then had no time for reading so never read more than a couple of pages at a stretch and then this past week I've had time again and tonight I was only about 100 pages away from the end which is not very much at all given the length of this book so I said fuck it and spent the past couple of hours reading and I just finished it and OMG BEST BOOK EVER. I have a thing for endings and how things come together and this was INCREDIBLE and WONDERFUL and everybody needs to go out and buy this book NOW.

As you were.

Ah, I started reading that on the high recommendation of one of my geekier friends (ie a good thing), and it was nice and it was interesting and had little pictures and a kind of fanciful charm, but about one third in I realised it was taking too long to do everything, and so I stopped for a while, gearing up so to speak, to heft the huge thing back into reading position, and never got back to it and didn't miss it at all and have never been sorry about it til now. So it really got better, did it?

Yeah, it's slow going for a while, thanks to the lovely Regency writing style. I found that the best way to get through it was to read only a few pages at a time -- that way it's charming and enjoyable, but doesn't get boring.

It picks up a lot in the third section -- "The Raven King" -- and it's physically impossible to put down for the last hundred pages. So, yes, it's very worth it in the end.

well, i've lugged that brick of a book twice into town to try to give it back to the pal who lent it to me, with no luck so far (at the giving-back) so it's still doorstopping my door, which may be a sign.

i'll give it another go, because i really want to like it, and if you say it gets better... it wasn't that i wasn't enticed, but it just seemed to take so long to do everything.

thanks for the encouragement, i'll read it with a nice picture of you in my mind (as i break my little fingers holding it up in bed).

It's SO worth it. Although, be forewarned: it can feel like slow going at first, but once you get into it, there's a wonderful payoff.
