SO. There is a branch of the New!Whoniverse I have basically no experience with, and that is SJA. I love Sarah Jane lots and lots, don't get me wrong; it's mostly that Who is close enough to being a kids' show for me already (fortunately with edge of dark fucked-up-ness), and I'm not particularly interested in an ACTUAL kids' show. I know the basic premise (i.e. Luke's origins), have read a few fics that crossed SJA over with Who or Torchwood, and that's about it.

But now I would like to include Sarah Jane in a Whoniverse fic I'm working on, and for that, I need a better sense of what exactly she's been up to these past few years.

FLIST, I TURN TO YOU. I'm sure a few of you watch SJA. I know where to find the episodes. What are a good couple of episodes -- say, two or three -- that I should watch to get a good sense of the SJA universe? I'm not actually trying to get into the show, or I'd just start at the first ep and work my way through. (Which, hey, if I really love it, I might do anyway, but that's not my goal at the moment.) I don't care about mytharcs or really cool villains. I just want to get a good feel for the world SJA inhabits -- who the people are, how they interact, what on earth that supercomputer is capable of. What are the most representative episodes of SJA?

Emphasis on Mr. Smith. If there's a really good Mr. Smith episode, gimme.

Recs?

Are you looking for Maria episodes or Rani episodes? Or both?

Either way, for Mr. Smith, "The Lost Boy" explains his arc. A good general Maria episode is "Warriors of the Kudlak." A good general Rani episode is "Mona Lisa's Revenge."

(And by "general" I'm going with "my favorites." I also feel like they give a good idea of what the show's about without being bogged down in arcs. Though the arcs in SJA are much less twisty than Who or TW, as you can expect.)

Personally, SJA was my favorite Whoniverse show before S5 of Who. I have more fun watching it than I do TW, and I feel like I'm secure in knowing it won't obliterate my heart. It's fun and sweet, but it definitely IS a kids' show, so I can see how it's maybe not what everyone is looking for :)
