WHONIVERSE FANS. You have failed me! I realize that many of us (including me) tend to overlook SJA. I am very guilty of this myself. I've seen a handful of SJA episodes and enjoyed them all, and yet I keep failing to watch the whole series properly.

But guys, the Doctor was in the latest episode. THERE CAN BE NEW ELEVEN IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW.

[ETA: really, really minor SJA spoilers )

This is almost as exciting as the fact that I finally figured out what song to use for Festivids.

Speaking of children's shows, I've been mainlining Avatar: the Last Airbender lately. Have finally got to the first Toph episode, which is nice because everyone talked about her so much and I was curious. And, yes, okay, this show is kind of amazing. You win. Katara kicks much ass, as expected, and Aang is...not my favorite, but it's not his fault he's a twelve-year-old boy, and other than that I like him. Zuko makes my heart flutter in ways animated characters really shouldn't, and also I feel like such a stereotypical fangirl, but whatever. I kind of randomly ship Zuko/Katara? Which I know is stupid, because Katara and Aang are clearly True Love Destiny etc etc etc. And they're cute, too. I just can't get over Aang being twelve, it kind of squicks me to imagine him in any romantic connotation. Eh, whatever, SO not the point of the show. WHICH IS AWESOME.

AND I LOVE SOKKA SO MUCH I KIND OF DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF. He's all snarky and sarcastic and sidekick-y, but he absolutely kicks ass despite having no magical powers, and it's really nice to see that you don't need to be special in any way to be loyal and brave and AWESOME. Especially with the power of snark on your side. Which isn't to say he doesn't have utter asshole moments -- hello, teenage boy -- but he generally learns from his mistakes and becomes a better person for them, and Katara is always there to kick him down a notch when he deserves it. SO WE'RE ALL GOOD.

Sokka: How did you guys get out?
Aang: Just like the legend says. We let love lead the way.
Sokka: Really? We let huge ferocious beasts lead our way.

SOKKA ILU FOREVER.

...yeah, this is what happens when I have a whole evening to myself. Wacky fun.

Watching SJA: TOTALLY WORTH IT FOR THE DOCTOR EPISODE HOMG.

Look, the show is cute and silly and fun, I can totally see the appeal, even though I've only watched a handful of episodes in no particular order. K-9 and Mr. Smith snarking at each other is kind of hilarious, too. But EEE DOCTOR HI DOCTOR.

I haven't missed Ten at all in the latest series, because Eleven and Amy are so awesome. And because I was kind of sick of the last year of specials. But it's kind of fantastic to get to see him again in SJA. (Apparently Tennant filmed this episode AFTER End of Time, so this is actually his last work as the Doctor. N'awww.)

Also, K-9 has a NEGOTIATING STAIRS function, which made me LOL.

Can these kids grow up to be the Doctor's companions someday? PLEASE? Because the prospect of Luke/Rani/Clyde running rings around the Doctor on the TARDIS for always is pretty much the greatest thing ever. Doesn't need to be anytime soon, I am quite fond of Amy. But maybe by the time we get to the Twelfth Doctor... ETA: I am obviously not the first person to consider this.

So I'm about five minutes into the first episode of Sarah Jane Adventures, and I have exactly two things to say, right off the bat:

1. Maria is ADORABLE.

2. WHAT THE HELL IS TOSH'S PSYCHO ALIEN GIRLFRIEND DOING WITH SARAH JANE?

(I realize that by her own race's standards, Mary was a criminal; ergo, the other members of her species are no more or less likely to be evil than any given human. BUT SERIOUSLY NOW.)

Presumably all will become clear, and again, I'm all of five minutes in. I just had to register my SRSLY?!

ETA: Okay, apparently not!Mary has nothing to do with anything. Thanks for the wtf, Rusty. But more importantly - "Hello, Maria. Hello, screaming girl." LOL LUKE YOU WIN AT LIFE.

SO. There is a branch of the New!Whoniverse I have basically no experience with, and that is SJA. I love Sarah Jane lots and lots, don't get me wrong; it's mostly that Who is close enough to being a kids' show for me already (fortunately with edge of dark fucked-up-ness), and I'm not particularly interested in an ACTUAL kids' show. I know the basic premise (i.e. Luke's origins), have read a few fics that crossed SJA over with Who or Torchwood, and that's about it.

But now I would like to include Sarah Jane in a Whoniverse fic I'm working on, and for that, I need a better sense of what exactly she's been up to these past few years.

FLIST, I TURN TO YOU. I'm sure a few of you watch SJA. I know where to find the episodes. What are a good couple of episodes -- say, two or three -- that I should watch to get a good sense of the SJA universe? I'm not actually trying to get into the show, or I'd just start at the first ep and work my way through. (Which, hey, if I really love it, I might do anyway, but that's not my goal at the moment.) I don't care about mytharcs or really cool villains. I just want to get a good feel for the world SJA inhabits -- who the people are, how they interact, what on earth that supercomputer is capable of. What are the most representative episodes of SJA?

Emphasis on Mr. Smith. If there's a really good Mr. Smith episode, gimme.

Recs?
