genderswapping for the win

Today was my day off, so I spent it applying for nine different jobs. Which I feel is fairly productive considering I've been wearing my pajamas all day. \o/ ?
And last night I again stayed up until 3am putting together a cast swap: Avengers full genderswap on Tumblr.

The Avengers:
Toni Stark, Iron Man - Lena Headey
Stephanie Rogers, Captain America - Evan Rachel Wood
Thor, Goddess of Thunder - Lucy Lawless
Ruth Banner, the Hulk - Amy Acker
Nathan Romanoff, Black Widower - Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Kit Barton, Hawkeye - Katee Sackhoff
The Rest:
SHIELD Director Nicole Fury - Audra McDonald
Loki, Goddess of Mischief - Eva Green
Peter Potts, CEO of Stark Industries - Benedict Cumberbatch
Philippa Coulson, SHIELD Agent - Gillian Anderson
Dr. Erika Selvig, astrophysicist - Helen Mirren
Dr. Jake Foster, astrophysicist - Fran Kranz
Col. Jaime “Rhodey” Rhodes, War Machine - Gina Torres
Becky Barnes, the Winter Soldier - Eliza Dushku
I know that everyone and their mother have already done this, but it's a fun concept to play around with, so. Katee Sackhoff as Hawkeye was my starting point for all this, and it kind of spiralled out of control from there. Lena Headey IS f!Tony in my head whenever I read a genderswapped fic. And come on, you know Eva Green would be fucking amazing as Loki.
There are a couple I'm less happy with -- in perfect honesty, I can't think of a single young actress who has the physique and the acting ability to pull of Captain America, largely because Hollywood so strongly encourages its women to be waiflike and super-skinny rather than brawny/muscular. The only actress who comes to mind with the right body type is Gwendoline Christie (Brienne in Game of Thrones), but I don't know if she could act the part, and of all the cast, that's the one I really, really wanted an American actress for. So I compromised. Evan Rachel Wood could play Steve really well -- just not sure about the physical aspect.
And Lucy Lawless is probably a bit old to play Thor, but fuck that, she's awesome.

When I read genderswap, I have a hard time picturing Stephanie Rogers or Toni Stark and making them as brawny and physically strong as their male versions, because until the Olympics started up, it had been a long time since I'd seen images of women who were both model-pretty *and* muscular in the way that RDJ and Chris Evans are both pretty and muscular.

Date: 2012-08-08 05:46 pm (UTC)The physicality issue bothers me less for Stark, because he's...fit, especially in the arm area, but not supposed to be some kind of super soldier. He's still an ordinary human who's hitting middle age and parties too hard, etc. But the whole point of Steve's character is that he was this scrawny, sickly kid who was injected with this super soldier serum, so his body has to be kind of ridiculous post-serum. Which is...not so common in women in Hollywood.
