freezer burn
Nov. 24th, 2014 07:21 pmCrowdsourcing time! I'm starting to poke at a multifandom vid, and I need some suggestions beyond my own usual scope of source material. Specifically, I'm looking at the women in refrigerators trope. More specifically, I'm looking for sci-fi/fantasy/comic book movies and TV shows that feature main characters' girlfriends/wives who are 1) killed off and then 2) appear to them later in dreams/visions/hallucinations.
Example: Jean Grey's death in X3 and then reappearance in Logan's dreams in The Wolverine.
I will also accept girlfriends who are believed to be dead and are later revealed to still be alive. (i.e. Bucky Barnes, except, y'know, the female equivalent.)
Any suggestions? :D?

Date: 2014-11-25 02:40 am (UTC)A less modern option would be Madeleine Elster/Judy Barton in Vertigo. The plot's a bit complicated, but that's a fairly early case of a woman in a refrigerator (there's a flashback that reveals that Judy impersonated the already-dead Madeleine; Judy also dies at the end of the film).

Date: 2014-11-25 01:53 am (UTC)Buffy: probably lots of varied First Evil appearances, but I know it appeared as Drusilla to Spike. (It appeared as Jenny Calendar, but only to Angelus, not Giles. And it appeared as Nikki Wood to Robin, but that's mothers.)
Hercules: the legendary journeys: Hercules sees a vision of Deianeira in the Elysian Fields.
Arrow: Shado appears as a hallucination a LOT in season 2, and she's a total damn non-canonical fridging.
Vampire Diaries: Anna appears to Jeremy after she's dead. And never comes back. Because Julie Plec hates joy and happiness.
Angel: Darla appears in "Inside Out," but to Connor, not Angel.
Doctor Who is weird, because timey-wimey. Arguably River is fridged the first time we ever meet her and then everything we see after that is post-fridging, but it's an unfair characterization. (And a fair one at the same time!)
What about mothers? That's pretty common. Fraser's mum in Due South appears in visions in the finale, for example -- and in a much less characterized way than his ghost dad.
...going through my DW and fic tags it is obvious to me how successfully I tend to avoid fandoms with these tropes. Go, me!

Date: 2014-11-25 02:01 am (UTC)Shado is already at the top of my list -- she's the reason I started brainstorming this vid.
Doctor Who is pretty good at avoiding outright fridging. There's Lisa on Torchwood, though.
I know mothers are the most commonly fridged, but the song I'm using works a lot better for love interests. I guess I can expand it if I don't find enough, but I think it should be fine.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I haven't seen Hercules or Vampire Diaries, I'll look into those.

Date: 2014-11-25 02:09 am (UTC)Anna is amazing, and for extra credit, she's the biracial girlfriend of a white character. Also the showrunner has explicitly stated she was killed to create angst for her boyfriend, Jeremy. He has a lot of visions of her, because for a while, he can see the dead, so there should be a ton of clips, including a sad goodbye and her watching him hook up with another girlfriend.

Any episode she's in for seasons two or three.
I'm looking forward to seeing the vid. :D

Date: 2014-11-25 10:00 am (UTC)*SPOILERS FOR THE EP IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT*
When Angelus has kidnapped Giles and they get Dru to pretend to be Jenny so Giles will tell them how to wake up Acathla. Is it OK if it's Dru? It's definitely a dream sequence, it seems to be a one-off thing Dru can do that's never referred to before or after.

Date: 2014-11-26 03:10 am (UTC)Kate's technically not romantically involved with any of the characters in canon, but if you need footage then I think you could definitely go with footage of her ghost/mass hallucination/whatever it actually was interacting with the characters of Gibbs, DiNozzo, or Abby. There was some pretty blatant subtext and flirting with those three at various points during her two years in the main cast.

Date: 2014-11-29 04:41 pm (UTC)And I was just re-reading the post, and I totally missed that you were only looking for sci-fi/fantasy/etc. shows. Which these two aren't. I mean, they have some slight fantastical elements at times, but they're still not genre shows.

Date: 2014-11-25 03:51 am (UTC)Vampire Diaries does this all the time, with both genders. Jeremy sees his dead ex Anna, as well as Bonnie. Damon sees Katherine, who is later revealed to be alive. (It's probably going to be really hard to use an iteration of that for a vid though, because Nina plays like five characters, Jeremy might be easier as Bonnie and Anna aren't doppelgangers).
Supernatural did it straight off the bat with Jess, but also later with both Ellen and Jo, as Ellen returns later married to Bobby, but it's just an alternate future they have to undo, effectively killing her again, and Jo comes back as dead and she and Dean always had some romantic what-if chemistry.
I thought Game of Thrones did it, but now trying to remember, the only actual vision-seeing of dead that I remember is inverted, with Dany seeing Drogo.
Hannibal has visions of dead ladies hanging around, but they're not love interests.
Shado from Arrow was a good one too, but I see you got that covered!

Date: 2014-11-26 03:07 am (UTC)Walking Dead...hmmm. Definitely the right genre, but oh god, I don't want to watch that show.

Date: 2014-11-26 03:16 am (UTC)If it's something you think you would like to have, I could probably scan through and find the episodes it's in for you, but it sounds like you have plenty without suffering through a show you'd dislike looking at!

So they, uh, bring his wife back to ask him things. Because aliens.

Er, how do you feel about using comics? Too difficult? Cuz obv then you have the whole website of suggestions at your disposal... Alternatively, I'd suggest poking the website and seeing how many of them got made into movies?

Hee, I assumed, don't worry, I think that'll be true of a lot of people. :)
