Aaand it's time for my favorite meme of the new year: fannish creativity round-up!

I know it's meant for fics, but I'm including vids in here too. Since I've made roughly the same amount of each this year.

Thanks to a burst of viddingness this afternoon, I'm more than 3/4 of the way through an Amy Pond vid. I could probably finish it this week, if this keeps up. Of course, we're only halfway through this series, and every successive episode is a new minefield of Amy clips. So arguably, by waiting, I could make a better vid.

Just...I'm at that so-fucking-close-to-done stage, and I don't want to wait six more weeks for six more episodes, when I know I can make a complete vid with what I've already got.

CLEARLY I NEED A POLL TO DECIDE THIS VERY IMPORTANT DECISION.

[Poll #1566117]

...for the record, yes, I should be writing fic right now, not vidding. But I got over a major hurdle in my Big Bang fic yesterday, so I'm taking a little break from that. (I am now officially past the 20,000 word minimum! Of course, that makes me less than halfway done with the fic I happen to be writing, but whatever.)

VIDDING, christ, stop eating my brain. I'm working on too many vids right now. One being a Merlin vid, of course. Because I already made a Gwen vid and a Morgana vid, so I've given up fighting the inevitable, and I'm making a Merlin-centric vid now. Except, do you know how difficult it is to pull clips for a Merlin vid? He's in EVERY GODDAMN SCENE, making lulzy faces, except trawling through every episode like this gets kinda boring, and then I get distracted by other characters.

Gwen's okay, see, because I'm like, sorry, already did your vid, and she's like, that's okay, I'll just hang out over here being awesome until you need me again. But Morgana? FUCK. She's all like EVERYTHING IS ABOUT ME ALWAYS, and it's really, really hard to resist that, because she's the most interesting character for me, and I'm like listen, I already did your vid, and she's like BITCH PLEASE. And then Arthur keeps being all, HEY IS IT MY TURN YET and I'm like DUDE, this is MERLIN'S vid so basically yes.

This is your brain on vidding, kids. Get out while you still can.

Man, I don't even know. I really, really, REALLY need to get cracking on my [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang fic, a.k.a. the post-CoE fic that's been rattling around in my brain driving me nuts pretty much since CoE first aired. I've done a pretty good job of finishing up my other outstanding fannish obligations over the past couple of months, not to mention extraneous Merlin vids. Today, I sat down at my laptop, put on my writing music, and determinedly opened up the word document.

So how have I spent the past few hours? Working on a Torchwood vid that came out of freaking nowhere.

*facepalm*

At least I'm in the right fandom this time?

So I have over a minute of an Amy Pond vid edited using only her first episode.

Guys, I don't even know.

This song suits her character arc so well, it's not even funny. I'm just going on faith that it will continue to do so for the rest of the season, I guess? Although, honestly, giving the way I'm clipping this, I could probably make a complete vid out of four or five episodes, tops.

oh, girls.

Because a Big Bang clearly isn't enough, I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon as well. As should everyone else, clearly.

Of course, all I'm really in the mood for these days is vidding. I'm currently actively working on three vids (one Morgana, one TARDIS-centric, and, yes ALREADY, one Amy Pond) with another two or three started but on the backburner until inspiration strikes. When did I become more of a vidder than a writer? This is kind of a mystery to me.

I kind of wish I could use the [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon prompt (whatever it winds up being) to drive the focus of a female-centric vid instead of a fic, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a FICathon, so.

I have made a Who/Torchwood vid! I like finishing vids. It's a good feeling. I'm still going to sit on it for a bit, see if there are any more tweaks I want to make tomorrow -- it didn't turn out quite how I'd expected, but I'm not unhappy with that. I kind of wanted more of a narrative throughout, though. Hmmm. On the other hand, it's way less depressing in the end than I'd originally planned, which is probably for the best (though let me tell you, some of the clipping I did from Journey's End/Exit Wounds/CoE really kind of broke me, even if I didn't use them all). It's also way less about the Doctor himself and more about the Companions and how they're shaped and broken by him -- and in Jack's case, how he then transfers that over to his team as his own pseudo-Companions. And yet, again, much LESS dark than I'd originally intended.

Which is probably good, because the other vid I currently have on a low burn is all about the dark and creepy shit that happens in sci-fi media relationships, so I really didn't need to do two bleak-as-fuck vids in a row.

I'm getting more into multifandom vidding lately -- I like how relationships between different fandoms can parallel and illuminate each other. I stuck to the Whoniverse for this one, but the next is going to be Who/Torchwood/BSG/Firefly/X-Files, I think. It really ought to include Supernatural and Buffy, actually, but I don't watch either of those shows, so while I could get my hands on the source material easily enough, I wouldn't have the faintest idea which episodes to go to for clips.

Vidding: how I procrastinate when I have writer's block. At least it's some kind of productivity.
kaydeefalls: rose logs in to v-chat with all her whoniverse buddies (whoniverse)
Oh, fandom.

Exhibit A: Sherlock Holmes trailer. I mainlined the Holmes stories last summer on my Italy trip, so this is really excellent timing. Also, jesus christ, like I didn't ship Holmes/Watson hard enough ALREADY. *fans self*

Exhibit B: Dollhouse renewed, apparently. Excellent. Let's see if Whedon can push it past intriguing into full-blown awesomeness in its second season.

Exhibit C: finally downloaded and listened to "Lost Souls" radio play, which brought my Torchwood love back HARD. Good timing, given BigBang fic.

And I spent all weekend vidding instead of writing BigBang, which, okay, sorta fail on my part. The problem with vid bunnies is that they're IMPOSSIBLE to ignore. You know how irritating it is getting a song stuck in your head? Yeah, well, having a vid bunny is having one particular song stuck in your head on constant loop UNTIL YOU FINISH THE DAMN VID. Try ignoring that for a while without losing your mind.

Real life is kind of too anxiety-inducing right now to think about. OH LOOK SHINY FANDOM.

...doomed.

Oh, hell, I have another vid idea.

NO. STOP. Must finish directing class project first! Which also means, teach myself sound design + create sound design by the weekend. Fuck.

Vid!

I really need to teach myself how to make fanvids. Because I have all these ideas in my head, and vidding's the sort of painstaking, neurotic project that suits my assorted neuroses nicely. I just...have no idea what sort of software I'd need, or how to get started. The matching clips to music I think I can do, the anal retentive futzing with timing so that every second matches up right, all that jazz, but...how do I pull those clips from DVD to...whatever program I need? And match it up with the song?

Of course, it doesn't help that I can't exactly make Doctor Who vids without any source for the video clips. But I could at least practice with the Firefly vid I have in my head, or the old Frodo/Sam vid I plotted out way back when. Except...how?

Maybe Google will help me. Or does anyone know of some brilliant fan-created guide to vidding somewhere? I'm sure at least a dozen must exist.

Also, did my final stint of canvassing for Obama today. THREE DAYS OMG.
