What I planned to do this evening: finish the last remaining scenes in my Big Bang fic. (Seriously, there are, like, three scenes I still haven't properly written. And I have failed to finish them ALL WEEK.)

What I did instead: TV MEME!

This is not a big picspam, but I couldn't resist. Shows: Band of Brothers - BSG - Doctor Who - Dollhouse - Firefly - HIMYM - QAF UK - Sports Night - Torchwood - True Blood - West Wing - X-Files.

Day 14 - Favorite male character

Even narrowing it down to one per show -- and not including ALL of the shows I like -- THIS WAS HARD.

Over the past couple of days, I've been mainlining season 2 of Dollhouse. I'd stopped watching due to life explosion at episode 4, so I've had a fair few to catch up with. It was DAMN GOOD this season, A+++. Highlight for me was definitely Topher and Topher!Victor geeking out together, because THAT SHIT IS AWESOME. Also: "Huh. When did you die?" is SUCH a Whedon line/situation, especially as spoken by Alan Tudyk. Which, all over win, even the parts that are kind of owie and heartbreaking.

However, I just reached the very end of episode 11, and I have to pause a moment to say one thing.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT BOYD LANGTON. WHAT. WHAT WHAT WHAT.

Now there is a twist I never saw coming.

Um. yeah. Only two episodes left. I'm gonna go finish the show now.

hoo boy.

Have caught up with FlashForward, just in time for a new episode. It's not the greatest show ever, but it keeps me interested, that's for damn sure. And "The Gift" just made me CRY, which I really wasn't expecting.

Also, Dominic Monaghan can talk quantum physics to me all day, baby, ohhhh yeah. That really shouldn't have been as hot as it was.

Seriously, how has this show not hit fandom properly yet? The cast list is MADE OF FANGIRL. Ahem. Apart from Joseph Fiennes, obviously, we have: Hikaru Sulu, Commodore Norrington, Merry Brandybuck regularly, with a recurring side of River Song, Zoe Washburne, and Leoben. Not to mention, just about every episode has passed the Bechdel Test, absolutely kickass women (JANIS OMG HAVE MY BABIES) and POCs, a canonical lesbian relationship, and a really intriguing premise with twists in every episode. It's certainly not perfect, but it's well worth a watch. And I would like someone else to speculate with about it, dammit!

In other TV news, Dollhouse has been canceled. Well, hell. I am glad they've promised to air the full season, though, and the premise wasn't really built to hold up for more than a couple of seasons, anyway. Hopefully Joss will use this as an opportunity to wrap up the story with style. I think nine more episodes could do it, so I'm willing to enjoy what we get, even if it's a bit disappointing. Dollhouse has been interesting fun -- and raised some fascinating moral issues -- but it's no Firefly. I'm not crushed.

Oh, fandom.

Exhibit A: Sherlock Holmes trailer. I mainlined the Holmes stories last summer on my Italy trip, so this is really excellent timing. Also, jesus christ, like I didn't ship Holmes/Watson hard enough ALREADY. *fans self*

Exhibit B: Dollhouse renewed, apparently. Excellent. Let's see if Whedon can push it past intriguing into full-blown awesomeness in its second season.

Exhibit C: finally downloaded and listened to "Lost Souls" radio play, which brought my Torchwood love back HARD. Good timing, given BigBang fic.

And I spent all weekend vidding instead of writing BigBang, which, okay, sorta fail on my part. The problem with vid bunnies is that they're IMPOSSIBLE to ignore. You know how irritating it is getting a song stuck in your head? Yeah, well, having a vid bunny is having one particular song stuck in your head on constant loop UNTIL YOU FINISH THE DAMN VID. Try ignoring that for a while without losing your mind.

Real life is kind of too anxiety-inducing right now to think about. OH LOOK SHINY FANDOM.

OMFG

This week's Dollhouse: meh with a side of whatever. I have no interest in stand-alone eps in this show. BUT. Trailer for next week! definite spoiler for 1x12 )

I need need NEED to focus on my Big Bang fic tonight (as opposed to, say, the BoB vid I started futzing with LAST night), but, y'know, we'll see how that works out for me. In the meantime, this is a really fascinating meta analysis of Dollhouse, which does a great job of expressing why I continue to be drawn into this show.

12,000 words written. 3000 words to go by Sunday. 7000 words to the final draft minimum. My concern is that this story has a lot more words than that to be finished. And also that it's really, really boring. >_

Dollhouse casting spoiler )

Completely unrelatedly, I have fallen hard for the Winters/Nixon. I hear that this pairing is referred to as The Obvious in Band of Brothers fandom, and I am okay with that. Because their love is so obvious. I've been seeking out fic where I can -- through [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, mostly, since that tends to be my starting point for any new fandom -- but if anyone has any recs of this nature, please to be bringing them to my attention? (I know there are a few Webster/Liebgott fans on my flist. I mean you no harm. Those two boys are lovely, and I can certainly see the slash potential. But at the moment, I'm not particularly interested in the fic there.)

BigBang fic: I have a massive exposition dump that needs, well, dumping. And I have no idea how to do it without just having the character monologue for a few paragraphs. This is greatly frustrating to me. I hate exposition dumps. There has to be another way to get this information across to the characters (and audience), but I cannot find it, and that's going to hang me up for a really, really long time. Urg. I suppose I should just keep it as a monologue for now, move on, and then go back and figure out how to fix it up later. But it is exceedingly annoying. Stupid characters needing to know things in order for the plot to proceed.

Fandom: I have nothing in particular to say about the latest Dollhouse, except that it managed to hit both one of my biggest kinks AND one of my biggest squicks in the same episode, which left me reeling a bit. Nor have I any deep thinky-thoughts about BSG, except a general HOW IS THIS SHOW ALMOST OVER WHAT THE FRAK with a side of MORE NOW PLEASE.

Also, I finished watching Band of Brothers today, which left me curled into a little ball of WAH. Oh, boys. Also, "Why We Fight" caught me completely off guard, which, really, it shouldn't have, but I was not expecting to see that for some reason. I was hugging myself and shaking, which is rather out of character for me. Ow. In general, though, wow that was good, and I need to go back to the beginning and rewatch it to try to actually keep track of the different characters, since it took a WHILE for me to figure out who was who and follow individual storylines. I mean, I had Winters and Nixon down from the beginning, and Malarkey shortly thereafter (not sure why him, of all of them), but the rest didn't sort themselves until near the end. I mean, it's a bunch of white guys in identical uniforms and HELMETS, it's hard for me to identify characters from their eyes alone unless I already recognize the actor (see: James McAvoy and LEE ADAMA WTF).

I'll need a bit of time before I rewatch, though. Too intense, too much, too soon. Maybe once my show is over.

And in RL: Oh, right, show. Because I'm out of my mind, I'm assistant stage managing a show with a funky independent theater company. We started rehearsals a couple of weeks ago. So I REALLY have no free time these days. But while my current day job in theater admin has been actively working to destroy my love of theater for months now, this ASM gig is reminding me why I wanted to be in this business in the first place, so that's good.

Major casting spoiler for Dollhouse.

Now I'm gonna have to keep watching this show. Bastards. Fine, I'll watch the second episode on hulu sometime this week, despite its mediocre reviews from my flist.

Curse you, Joss Whedon!

But hey, who needs Helo in BSG when we can have him in "Dollhouse"?

Interesting, Joss Whedon. Not fantabulous, but interesting. I'll reserve judgment until I've seen a few more episodes.

Liked the Edward James Olmos shoutout to all the people who are only watching for the Tahmoh Penikett connection. ;)
