festivids!

So basically everyone else can go home, I totally won Festivids this year, OH MY GOSH. I received the two most gorgeous and perfect vids ever, and I do not say these things unless I mean them.

First, continuing the Sports Night theme of my holiday exchanges (seriously, I'm kind of baffled myself, I requested tons of other things too), this lovely ensemble vid, To Make You Feel My Love. THEY ALL JUST LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH OKAY. I'm really impressed by how the vidder made such a slow-paced song work with a TV show that's so quick and talky, but it really, really does. And while obviously the lead characters get the most screentime, all the other characters get their moments, too, and I LOVE THEM ALL.

Then, this weird and gorgeous Donnie Darko vid, I'm Not Done, which captures the essence of the movie and Donnie's unbalanced mental state absolutely perfectly. It's eerie and unsettling and very, very beautiful.

SO MUCH AWESOME. Now to dive in and check out the rest!

(If anyone guesses mine, I'll...write you a thing? IDK. There are a lot of vids. Mine is...obviously mine if you know what you're looking for, but I don't think I've ever really discussed the fandom on this journal before. It's not anything I've ever vidded or written for.)

Happy Yuletide Day! Or whatever you happen to celebrate, y'know. I got a Sports Night fic, which is very appropriate given the Sorkinverse kick I've been on lately: The Team Player, in which Kim is a total BAMF and saves the show. WHICH IS THE TRUEST OF FACTS. And people should check it out. :D

My recipient seems to like her fic, which is awesome. I...feel like I've gotten WAY fewer responses to my fic than usual, which made me feel very insecure for a minute, and then I browsed through the Yuletide archive again and realized that a lot of fics have similarly low hit counts/kudos/comments/what have you, so I'm going to stop being a selfish brat and not whine about it again. There are just SO DAMN MANY Yuletide fics this year, it takes a while for people to work through them. So yeah. Leave your fics some love, is all I'm sayin'. I'm trying to at least kudos every fic I like. ♥

Saw Sherlock Holmes 2 with the parents today. Great fun, though the plot was kinda eh. Holmes & Watson are totally shtupping. And I WANT TO MARRY MARY MORSTAN OMG. In all other incarnations, including the original stories, I am a diehard Holmes/Watson (or Sherlock/John) shipper; in the Ritchie version, which are probably the most outright slashtastic, I'm all about the Holmes/Watson/Mary OT3. BECAUSE MARY MORSTAN ♥ ♥ ♥

And then my coworker from my day job texted me a photo of my reception desk, which has been kind of destroyed and one computer monitor is missing. So that kind of put a damper on my day. Not my personal property or my mess to clean up, but still. What the hell.

Anyway. Time to find a Doctor Who Christmas Special download! And I am SO EXCITED about [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant fics being posted starting tomorrow. (And may have picked up a pinch hit, which may have requested a very simple fluffy scenario which I am bracketing with MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PLOT, but that's kind of business as usual for me. Except, oh god, I need to write the entire thing in a week. Good thing I'm on actual vacation!)

'Tis the season, clearly. By which I mean, Yuletide is upon us!

(I have been participating in Yuetide every single year since it started. I feel so old school.)

SO. Dear Yulebat,

Basically, you are awesome. Because there is nothing about the fandoms I requested that I don't love. (Except the Dating Plan. If this is the fandom we matched on, you know of what I speak. But anyway.) More importantly, there are no characters in any of these fandoms that I don't love with an all-consuming passion, because seriously, THEY ARE ALL AMAZING AND BRILLIANT AND SPARKLY. Yes, even the dumb ones. I don't care, I love them all.

So here are some quick and dirty things that I like and don't like in fics in general:

LIKES: witty banter, wacky hijinks, random shenanigans, everyone being a BAMF in their own particular way, long plotty fics, quick incisive character studies, romance, friendship, TEAMS, gen, ensemble casts, happy (or realistic but generally hopeful) endings, boys being boys, girls kicking butt and taking names, first time fic of any rating.

DISLIKES: torture porn, excessive angst, excessive schmoop, mpreg, hardcore kink, kid!fic, character bashing of any kind, humiliation, death!fic.

But really, my dear Yulebat, I'm pretty easy. As long as you avoid the "dislikes" list, write whatever suits you and the fandom and the story you want to tell, and I will LOVE it. Sure, I'm a fan of happy-ish endings, but if you want to break my heart instead? Go right ahead and shatter it into a million pieces, it's all good. The "likes" list are by no means mandatory in any way, write what you want, I have complete faith in you. Why? Because you love the same fandom I do, because we matched on it, and that means you have preemptively won Yuletide. :D

I have nothing fandom-specific to add that wasn't on my sign-up form, but for posterity, here it is: Sports Night, Mairelon the Magician, The Sting )

I'm bored. I mean, I am eternally grateful that for a short space of time I have had ACTUAL WEEKENDS, and I'm sure I'll be kicking myself this time next week when I realize yup, they're going away again for another few months. But I have no particular fannish projects holding my attention at the moment (still in post-Big Bang slump, though it still needs another round of editing once my betas have had a chance to slog through it) and nothing much to DO. I've watched another disc of True Blood, which finishes the first season. There are other shows I'm vaguely interested in, but none enough to seek out for download. And while I would love to curl up with my laptop and read good fic, I'm still in a Jack/Ianto frame of mind and I've spent the past month rereading just about every halfway decent fic for the pairing, and I want to read NEW fic. But that fandom's taken a bit of a hit since CoE, and even the CoE fix-it phase of fandom seems to have died down, at least for the moment.

And there is no new Doctor Who today. TRAGIC.

So instead I'll knock out a few more of the TV meme, since I am terminally incapable of posting on anything resembling a regular basis.

Day 19 - Best TV show cast

I freaking LOVE ensemble shows. TEAMS! The biggest downfall of Doctor Who, for my particular tastes, is that it focuses too tightly on the Doctor and the Companion. This is why I get so bloody excited about multiple companions, like Nine & Rose & Jack, or Eleven & Amy & Rory, and why for all of the many pitfalls of "Journey's End", I will love it forever for giving us all of those awesome people flying the TARDIS together. The TEAM! element of Torchwood is vastly more important to me than my shipping Jack/Ianto, and my biggest problem with CoE. But I digress, clearly. So: Whoniverse, basically out for this one.

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD ENSEMBLE SHOWS, guys! I clearly cannot pick just one! Here, have a celebratory picspam of AWESOME TEAMS BEING AWESOME. ensembles FTW! )

Day 20 - Favorite kiss

I was going to say, there is no way I can narrow this down. And then maybe try to picspam you again. Because there's Mulder/Scully in "Millennium", and Nine/Rose in "Parting of the Ways", and Simon/Kaylee MAKING THE FUCK OUT FINALLY in "Serenity" (yes I know that's the movie, but it's just an extension of the show and it totally counts), and Stuart/Vince at Vince's birthday party, and and and...

But no. Look, I have a ship for every show, and every kiss is awesome. But I do play favorites occasionally. yeah, that one. )

Look, this is the scene that made me start watching the Whoniverse as a whole. I had seen nothing, and then I saw this scene on YouTube, and then I downloaded the first episode of new!Who and went for it in order to eventually see this in context. That is one damn important kiss in my fannish life.

Also, NNGK.

Day 21 - Favorite ship

DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN.

Picspams take a freaking long time. I'm going to be lazy now.

Torchwood - Jack/Ianto. Doctor Who - Doctor/Rose, Amy/Rory(/Doctor). West Wing - CJ/Danny. Firefly - Zoe/Wash. QAF UK - Vince/Stuart. X-Files - Mulder/Scully. All of these are ships for which I will trawl the internet for quite literally weeks or months on end, to varying degrees of success. Every show has its own ship, but those are the ones that are still my bulletproof kinks. I am not shippy to the exclusion of other pairings, nor to the point of hating any pairings involving just one of my ship. But yeah.

Day 22 - Favorite series finale

...hmm. Most series tend to drift by the end; there are very few series finales that leave me satisfied. I'm definitely not counting miniseries here, because they're written to be one complete story -- otherwise "Points" for Band of Brothers would be an automatic win.

Toss-up: "West Wing" ended VERY well, given how long the show ran; the final episode is a bit sentimental, but god knows it earned it. And I love love LOVE Josh in the Oval Office with Santos -- "What's next?" BIG SPARKLY HEARTS.

But also? Queer as Folk UK. Now there was one show Russell T Davies showed out with style. Everyone gets their own freaking awesome epilogue -- Hazel gets married (for tax reasons)! Bernard becomes a porn baron! Nathan becomes king of the world! -- and, most importantly: There are many rumours about Stuart and Vince -- all of them true. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

To complement yesterday's picspam:

Day 15 - Favorite female character

THIS WAS EVEN HARDER TO NARROW DOWN THAN BOYS. Shows: BSG - Doctor Who - Firefly - HIMYM - Life - Merlin - QAF UK - Sports Night - Torchwood - True Blood - West Wing - X-Files.

GIRLS ARE AWESOME )

BOYS.

What I planned to do this evening: finish the last remaining scenes in my Big Bang fic. (Seriously, there are, like, three scenes I still haven't properly written. And I have failed to finish them ALL WEEK.)

What I did instead: TV MEME!

This is not a big picspam, but I couldn't resist. Shows: Band of Brothers - BSG - Doctor Who - Dollhouse - Firefly - HIMYM - QAF UK - Sports Night - Torchwood - True Blood - West Wing - X-Files.

Day 14 - Favorite male character

Even narrowing it down to one per show -- and not including ALL of the shows I like -- THIS WAS HARD.

BOYS! )

Jeremy Goodwin makes everything better. Even a show that's already awesometastic can only be improved by judicious application of Jeremy Goodwin.

I suppose at some point I'll have to start referring to him as Will Bailey, at least in a West Wing context, but in my heart of hearts, he's just Jeremy loving politics instead of sports for a change.

And lord knows he'll fit right into the press briefings -- half of the Sports Night control room are now White House reporters.

I have some Sports Nights icons now. I seem to be going through a textless phase of icon-making. Anyway, I think I shall use this as my directing icon, because it is the control room and Dana is kind of like a director, in a TV news sort of way. I wish I could give orders straight to my actors' ears in the middle of a play soemtimes, that's for damn sure. Anyway, last night was the first rehearsal for one of the two short plays I'm directing as part of a new works festival in June, and oh, bliss. It's been so long since I've directed my own damn show, I almost forgot how happy it makes me. I mean, first rehearsal, so some awkwardness, and getting the cast sorted out, and flying by the seat of my pants as always, but that's part of what makes it fun.

And tomorrow I'm leaving work at noonish to get on a plane and fly home for Passover, which makes me very happy indeed. I've missed NYC. Family shall be, as always, stressful and argumentative and endlessly entertaining, and there will be seder, and possibly catching up with old friends, and a day and a half off of work, and respite from the general suckiness and loneliness that has been my life in Chicago of late.

I think, secretly, the best part of moving to D.C. will be taking me that much closer to home. Not my parents, necessarily -- we get along much better when we only see each other a handful of times per year -- but I really am an East Coaster, and more specifically a New Yorker, at heart. Chicago's a great town, it's entirely possible I'll move back eventually. But it's not home.

In other news, I started reading Kushiel's Dart a couple of days ago, and I'm loving it to bits. Although every now and then it hits me that I'm reading incredibly kinky smut at work. :D
