kaydeefalls: simon/kaylee giggling together (laughter (simon/kaylee))
So...haven't been posting much RL stuff lately. Or at all. work stuff, or, unemployment, yay! )

In the interest of staying positive, though, I put together a Kaylee (from Firefly) costume for Halloween, which I was quite pleased with! Shiny, cap'n! )

So for some reason I decided to stay up until 3am last night playing with graphics. (I hit some kind of critical mass of frustration with not having had Photoshop for eight months, so I downloaded the trial version of Elements on a whim. GOD I MISSED PHOTOSHOP. Something tells me I will be blowing some of my savings on keeping this once the trial version expires.)

I've been playing around with race- and gender-swapped casts of things in my head for a while, so here, have a recast of Firefly if the crew of Serenity actually reflected the Asian-dominant culture of its 'verse. (Originally posted on my tumblr.) Firefly racebending )

I'm bored. I mean, I am eternally grateful that for a short space of time I have had ACTUAL WEEKENDS, and I'm sure I'll be kicking myself this time next week when I realize yup, they're going away again for another few months. But I have no particular fannish projects holding my attention at the moment (still in post-Big Bang slump, though it still needs another round of editing once my betas have had a chance to slog through it) and nothing much to DO. I've watched another disc of True Blood, which finishes the first season. There are other shows I'm vaguely interested in, but none enough to seek out for download. And while I would love to curl up with my laptop and read good fic, I'm still in a Jack/Ianto frame of mind and I've spent the past month rereading just about every halfway decent fic for the pairing, and I want to read NEW fic. But that fandom's taken a bit of a hit since CoE, and even the CoE fix-it phase of fandom seems to have died down, at least for the moment.

And there is no new Doctor Who today. TRAGIC.

So instead I'll knock out a few more of the TV meme, since I am terminally incapable of posting on anything resembling a regular basis.

Day 19 - Best TV show cast

I freaking LOVE ensemble shows. TEAMS! The biggest downfall of Doctor Who, for my particular tastes, is that it focuses too tightly on the Doctor and the Companion. This is why I get so bloody excited about multiple companions, like Nine & Rose & Jack, or Eleven & Amy & Rory, and why for all of the many pitfalls of "Journey's End", I will love it forever for giving us all of those awesome people flying the TARDIS together. The TEAM! element of Torchwood is vastly more important to me than my shipping Jack/Ianto, and my biggest problem with CoE. But I digress, clearly. So: Whoniverse, basically out for this one.

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD ENSEMBLE SHOWS, guys! I clearly cannot pick just one! Here, have a celebratory picspam of AWESOME TEAMS BEING AWESOME. ensembles FTW! )

Day 20 - Favorite kiss

I was going to say, there is no way I can narrow this down. And then maybe try to picspam you again. Because there's Mulder/Scully in "Millennium", and Nine/Rose in "Parting of the Ways", and Simon/Kaylee MAKING THE FUCK OUT FINALLY in "Serenity" (yes I know that's the movie, but it's just an extension of the show and it totally counts), and Stuart/Vince at Vince's birthday party, and and and...

But no. Look, I have a ship for every show, and every kiss is awesome. But I do play favorites occasionally. yeah, that one. )

Look, this is the scene that made me start watching the Whoniverse as a whole. I had seen nothing, and then I saw this scene on YouTube, and then I downloaded the first episode of new!Who and went for it in order to eventually see this in context. That is one damn important kiss in my fannish life.

Also, NNGK.

Day 21 - Favorite ship

DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN.

Picspams take a freaking long time. I'm going to be lazy now.

Torchwood - Jack/Ianto. Doctor Who - Doctor/Rose, Amy/Rory(/Doctor). West Wing - CJ/Danny. Firefly - Zoe/Wash. QAF UK - Vince/Stuart. X-Files - Mulder/Scully. All of these are ships for which I will trawl the internet for quite literally weeks or months on end, to varying degrees of success. Every show has its own ship, but those are the ones that are still my bulletproof kinks. I am not shippy to the exclusion of other pairings, nor to the point of hating any pairings involving just one of my ship. But yeah.

Day 22 - Favorite series finale

...hmm. Most series tend to drift by the end; there are very few series finales that leave me satisfied. I'm definitely not counting miniseries here, because they're written to be one complete story -- otherwise "Points" for Band of Brothers would be an automatic win.

Toss-up: "West Wing" ended VERY well, given how long the show ran; the final episode is a bit sentimental, but god knows it earned it. And I love love LOVE Josh in the Oval Office with Santos -- "What's next?" BIG SPARKLY HEARTS.

But also? Queer as Folk UK. Now there was one show Russell T Davies showed out with style. Everyone gets their own freaking awesome epilogue -- Hazel gets married (for tax reasons)! Bernard becomes a porn baron! Nathan becomes king of the world! -- and, most importantly: There are many rumours about Stuart and Vince -- all of them true. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

To complement yesterday's picspam:

Day 15 - Favorite female character

THIS WAS EVEN HARDER TO NARROW DOWN THAN BOYS. Shows: BSG - Doctor Who - Firefly - HIMYM - Life - Merlin - QAF UK - Sports Night - Torchwood - True Blood - West Wing - X-Files.

GIRLS ARE AWESOME )

BOYS.

What I planned to do this evening: finish the last remaining scenes in my Big Bang fic. (Seriously, there are, like, three scenes I still haven't properly written. And I have failed to finish them ALL WEEK.)

What I did instead: TV MEME!

This is not a big picspam, but I couldn't resist. Shows: Band of Brothers - BSG - Doctor Who - Dollhouse - Firefly - HIMYM - QAF UK - Sports Night - Torchwood - True Blood - West Wing - X-Files.

Day 14 - Favorite male character

Even narrowing it down to one per show -- and not including ALL of the shows I like -- THIS WAS HARD.

BOYS! )

I've really been enjoying reading everyone else's responses to the 30 Days of TV meme, so! This is a bandwagon I need to hop aboard.

Day 01: A show that never should've been canceled.

I veered between a couple of shows for a bit, but in the end, I'm gonna have to go with Firefly.

firefly

Look, I don't need to introduce anyone to this show, right? Joss Whedon, space western, amazing witty snappy dialogue, heists, diverse and interesting cast of characters, etc. The show so rabidly popular among fans they got a movie to finish off the plot. The half-season of episodes we have are so fucking good -- and, frankly, the first half of a first season of a new show is usually comprised of its weakest episodes. Can you imagine where Firefly could have gone? If the events of the Big Damn Movie had been given a full season to develop and reach that climax -- oh, man, the lost opportunities of this show make me so very, very angry. But what we're left with is gorram near perfect, even so.

If you somehow haven't seen it yet, the DVDs are fairly cheap and SERIOUSLY WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR.

the rest of the meme, to keep track )

Just rewatched Serenity for the first time. I've watched the series over and over and over again, but never wanted to revisit the movie -- I didn't like it much the first time, and, well, there is that thing where my favorite character is made dead. But I caved and bought the collector's edition DVD, because it was bound to happen sooner or later. So yeah.

I liked it a lot better this time. Of course, the first time, I had just marathoned the entire TV series for the first time, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] siochan, and the movie seemed quite a letdown after that. I still don't think it's as good as the rest of Firefly -- well, it's better than a couple of episodes, like "The Message", but nowhere near as wonderful as, say, "Out of Gas". But that's what happens when you're forced to cram about a full season's worth of plot into a two-hour movie. I dunno, I was a lot more forgiving of its flaws this time, and noticed the good bits more. And, of course, was reduced to a snivelling wreck at the thing with the leaf and the wind -- which, incidentally, they foreshadow the living heck out of, now that I knew to look, holy shit.

Basically, though, the Firefly love is strong in me. Wah.

So my mom made me watch House tonight. I liked. I kinda suspected I would. But fortunately, one episode does not an addict make, which is good because Tuesdays at 9? Right smack in the middle of UT rehearsal time. Actually, this is why I completely gave up on primetime television when I started college.

Then I tried to show my mom Firefly. She fell asleep about twenty minutes into the pilot, claiming none of it made any sense. Great. This frustrates me immensely, because generally my mom and I have similar tastes in these things, and I was looking forward to rewatching the series with her. Bah.

Have, over the past two nights, succeeded in getting the boyfriend and Roommate #1 hooked on Firefly. Go me!

In other news, vaguely interesting fandom meme:

Ask Me My Fandom Opinion

How this works:

1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
2. Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

By Friday, I need to write a 3000 paper on a topic I'm not interested in. And a show proposal. And this weekend, I have to come up with a lighting design and hang/focus. And prepare a ten-minute presentation for my theatre management course, which also involves a paper. And on Wednesday I have a phone interview for a summer internship for which I'm still missing a letter of rec. And, of course, several hours of class on Thursday and Friday. This is officially the Week From Hell TM.

So what am I doing? Making Firefly icons, of course.

*facepalm*

So, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] siochan, I have now at last seen Firefly. All of it. Great show, really. I can finally understand why everyone was so pissed off about it being cancelled.

Also saw Serenity. cut for unpopular opinions and spoilers )

But, hey, Firefly! Was good! Which everyone already knew and the fandom seems to have mostly deactivated, but, y'know, still.

In other news, christ, could anything ELSE go wrong with my show proposal? No, really, bring it on, it still just barely has a snowball's chance in hell of passing and we can't have THAT, now can we?
