It's sad that I don't own this movie. Because I have to watch it every time it comes around on TV, and it comes around so often that not only can I recite most of the dialogue, I've also memorized the placement of the commercial breaks.

("No ticket.")

This is my 500th post. That frightens me.

In the spirit of [livejournal.com profile] filmelder and his pretentious film school opinions, and the fact that I can't resist a [indirect] challenge, kaydee rewrites the AFI's 100 best films list. Except I'm including foreign films, just because I can. (And keep in mind that I haven't seen very many pre-1985 movies, so there are a few Greats that I'm not listing because I haven't seen 'em, not because they aren't Great. Oh, and yes, there are a few children's movies on there, because...still great.)

...On second thought, I'm only doing 60. Because I really haven't seen enough pre-1985 movies, and that makes my list seem a little...unfair. There are a lot of "Classics" that I haven't seen yet but really want to, and something tells me a bunch of them will make it on my list after I see them. And yeah. So.

60 coolest films ever )

AUGH! THIS JUST IN -- SPOILER PICS MAY CAUSE CARDIAC ARREST. Holy fucking shit. MerryPippinFrodoSamEowynAragornLegolasEEEEEEEE! Is it 12/17 yet? No? WHY THE FUCK NOT?!
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (don't ask.)
Am loving that movie, yes precious. So much fun, in that "Look, it's a 60s romantic comedy the way they SHOULD have been made!" kind of way. Brilliant. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be satirizing the genre or embracing it, but it was damn enjoyable either way. Predictable but with a twist, cheesy but brilliant, just...ah, wonderful. Yes.

And then there's the Ewan McGregor factor. See, he's playing this playboy type who seduces all the girls, the eternal bachelor, yadda yadda yadda. You're supposed to think he's a real sleazebag, a slimy womanizer, etc. And you do -- or would, if you weren't so busy wanting to have sex with him. Like, you look at the broads he seduces, and you think, "Aw, poor girl, she's being so used -- that bitch, I want to be used by him!" Of course, it's a romantic comedy, so by the end Renee Zellweger reforms him and all that, and he gives up his slimy, womanizing ways, and you want to be all "Yay, he's given up his slimy womanizing ways!" but instead you're more like, "Damn, why'd he have to give up his slimy, womanizing ways before I could have my way with him?"

So, yes, down with love! Up with wild hot monkey sex with Ewan McGregor!

And, incidentally, Catcher Block (Ewan) and Peter McManus (that guy from Frasier) are SO fucking. Even Peter's girlfriend says so.

meh.

Matrix: no spoilers, but know that the action sequences kick much assage, Agent Elrond Smith rocks very hard, but the dialogue BURNS. Also, Neo and Trinity have no friggin' chemistry whatsoever, and this is the first time I've ever disliked Laurence Fishburne as an actor. The plot is five parts cool and three parts contrived. So, final score (out of 10):
Special FX / Action sequences: 11
Plot: 7
Acting: 4
Dialogue: 2
FINAL SCORE: 6
Look, if you just wanna have a good time and let the visuals blow you away, then have at it. It's brilliant. But don't look for anything impressive or fulfilling otherwise.

In other news...
AI - whew. Still have Clay.
Home - wow, I just spent over an hour of solid mopping in the kitchen. The friggin' dishwasher leaked. And by leaked, I mean POURED WATER OUT OF EVERY OROFICE. For fuck's sake.

Top five most watched films:
1. LotR (both FotR and TTT)
2. A Fish Called Wanda
3. Indiana Jones trilogy
4. Star Wars trilogy
5. tie between Robin Hood: Men In Tights (shut. up.) & Monty Python and the Holy Grail

And, yes, trilogies count as one film.

BUT, for a little flavor...

What (in my opinion) are, in fact, the Top Five Best Films of All Time (in no particular order):
-The Lord of the Rings (All three. Even though RotK ain't out yet.)
-Schindler's List
-The Usual Suspects
-The Godfather (but only part I and the "olden days" half of part II)
-Star Wars trilogy (the impact this has had on filmmaking...)

And, the five movies with the Best. Endings. EVER. (I love tricksy endings):
-The Usual Suspects (::cackles evilly::)
-Memento ("...Right, now where was I?")
-The Sixth Sense (come on, you KNOW you flipped out the first time you saw it)
-The Godfather part I (not tricksy. just GUH.)
-Silence of the Lambs (::shudders::)

Saw Far From Heaven today. Hence, subject line. Yes, Dennis Quaid and one of his boytoys kiss passionately onscreen. For, like, two seconds, but it's a start.

Men kissing aside, this is a gorgeous film. Come, drool over the cinematography with me! Lavish and overdone in true technicolor 1950's style, with the lushest score you've ever heard. Just stunning. And Julianne Moore is quite good, as is Dennis Quaid. Dennis Haysbert is pretty good, too, although he sorta pales in comparison to the other two. Some of the dialogue could use a bit of work, and I'm not thrilled with the ending, but a thoroughly decent film throughout. And not hideously depressing, so neener to you, [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud.

Now, back to my original subject. Last week I found a book of movie lists in Barnes & Noble (written by Richard Roeper, of Ebert & Roeper). Things like, "Movies in which a white woman and black man have racial issues whilst hooking up," and such. One such list was a comparison of reasonably well-known actresses who have kissed another woman onscreen vs. actors who have kissed another man. There were about thirty women on the list, vs. maybe three or four men. Roeper's explanation? Majority of directors/producers/writers in Hollywood are men, and therefore turned on by lesbians making out -- but women are not interested in gay men kissing.

I beg to differ.

I could go into a rant about double standards and men fearing for their masculinity, but that's a whole 'nother morass of issues, and I'm sleepy. But needless to say, Richard Roeper is not on my favorite person list.

So I was merrily writing my AP Hell paper, finally happy with my thesis and such. Lots of quotes ready to be used, flowing style, and it's always nice when I know where I'm going. After cranking out 3+ pages reasonably quickly, I was feeling pretty good.

Then I suddenly, violently lost all interest. And so I'm procrastinating again, unable to write a single sentence. Damn you, senior slump!

As you were.

Edit: While I'm at it, shall answer [livejournal.com profile] dreamspeak's question - Favorite Shakespeare that ISN'T Midsummer Night's Dream. (Inspired by your icon. :P)
"Much Ado About Nothing." Is my favorite Shakespeare play. EVER. Technically not the best one he wrote, but I love it to death and always shall. Three main reasons: 1) Benedick & Beatrice's war of the words, 2) everything Dogberry ever says, and 3) Kenneth Branaugh's movie version, which I saw at a youngish age and completely fell in love with. Rent it today. Seriously. Best cast EVER (Kenneth Branaugh, Emma Thompson, Robert Sean Leonard, Denzel Washington, and Keanu Reaves is remarkably good as the villain). ::wallows in Shakespeare!love::

See the icon? Yup. That was me. TTT viewing #9, and I was all alone, and that scene came up, and, well... I can't say that I'm proud of myself, but DAMN it felt good! The theater seemed to appreciate it, too. I'm turning into [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud. It's so scary.

I mean, technically I was going to see The Hours, but... Look, I could see an intellectually stimulating film, and leave feeling all pensive and depressed, or I could see TTT. Let's face it, The Hours didn't stand a chance.

Now to watch X-Men on TV. Homework? Qu'est-ce que c'est "homework"? I know not of what you speak...

Saw The Pianist today. Expected yet another typical Holocaust movie. Was wrong, oh was I wrong. Why The Pianist will rock your socks off. Spoilers ahead. )

So, yes. Awesome movie, best WWII-related film since Schindler's List (which is one of my Top Five Films of All Time, incidentally). I still kinda want Gangs of New York to take Best Picture, but The Pianist most definitely earned its nomination. Now to figure out why I had never even HEARD of this movie before the Golden Globes...

I am such a film geek. And loving every second of it!
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (random wackos)
Everything just kinda feels dead. Bleg. Need something different. Hence, iconage no longer limited to LotR and the actors therein. Three "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" icons added. Feel the Colin/Ryan love. Or something. Yeah. Go forth and be random!

Finally saw Chicago. ...and this is my response to it. )

Why is LJ being a slowassed bitch tonight? Bah.

Anyway, what with all the Oscar hubbub, and people trying to gauge the frontrunners in all the categories, and which-will-be-the-top-five-up-for-best-picture and all, I thought I'd take a slightly different approach.

Homage to the Top Three Overlooked Films )

Just watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the first time since I saw it in theaters. Oh, man, I'd forgotten how wonderful that movie was. Just bawled my friggin' eyes out. Anyone who knows me in RL will tell you how cynical I am. I don't cry too easily. This is at the top of an extraordinarily short list of movies that make kaydee cry. And not just a little teary at the end, or whatnot. Real, honest-to-goodness sobbing. Oh, the benefits of watching movies alone...

All right, Peter Jackson. I offer this up as a direct challenge. I fully expect RotK to make me cry like a baby. I'm already ten times more emotionally involved with the hobbits than with Jen and Li and Shen. Please, please deliver...!

I forgot how long Star Wars Episode II feels. Even though it's shorter than the LotR films. Dude, talk about your crappy dialogue. Those love scenes are like badfic -- ON SCREEN!

But, one must not look a gift horse in the mouth, and I now own Eps I and II on DVD, and I shall be grateful. For lo, though they may sucketh mightily, they are still affiliated with the Star Wars franchise... Besides, I also got Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. So, coolness.

Oh, and apparently Tash has finally decided to join us. Greetings, [livejournal.com profile] lianara, and do I haveta start calling you Nikolai now? Mph. Too confusing, that. That would make me Petra, and Tari would be Ender, and it would all go downhill from there. Bah phooey to confusing usernames.

Just saw Gangs of New York. Okay, kids, let's count the Oscars:
1. Best Picture
2. Best Director - Martin Scorsese
3. Best [Supporting?] Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
4. Best Score - Howard Shore (again!)
5. Best Cinematography
6. Best Editing
7. Best Sound
And a whole bunch of other awards whose names I've forgotten. Makeup/Costumes will probably go elsewhere (my bet is TTT, unless they think last year's was enough), as will any acting awards Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win. Although, hell, I'm willing to give him all of them. I don't think it deserves any kind of special effects awards, either. But, okay, yes, this movie kicks LotR's ass into the ground. I never expected TTT to win, but at least now I know it's losing to a movie that deserves it.

Now we need to sit Peter Jackson down to watch this movie, and take a few notes. If RotK delivers HALF the dramatic and emotional impact of GoNY, it stands a chance at next year's Oscars. But this year? Gangs of New York. Period. That's it, the Oscar race is officially over, we can fast-forward to December 2003 now...

ooooh.....

Instead, New Line] is developing another possible trilogy drawn from children's novelist Philip Pullman's fantasy series, "His Dark Materials," which includes "The Golden Compass," "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass." This time, a precocious 11-year-old orphan girl raised by Oxford scholars is the heroine. Playwright Tom Stoppard is writing the screenplay for the first movie. New Line says it could be ready for release in 2005.

The man who brought us Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead AND The Invention of Love is writing the screenplay to the Philip Pullman trilogy? Say it with me: KICK ASS!!! Now if only they can find some kids who can act...

Random days off from school kick ass.

Finally showed Tari and Lydia (...and Dan and Robbie Jr.) the light, as in a real MST, as in the final episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Perchance this shall improve our MSTing skills. Perchance not. We'll see.

Saw that new Bond movie. It was pretty good, for a Bond movie. Fulfilled its purpose as two hours of action and little substance. But fun all the same. And dang nabbit, why did no one TELL me that Lawrence Makoare was in it?! ...His death is slightly less gruesome this time, although he does get his arm hacked off. Or lasered off, rather. Heh.

Also snuck into Emperor's Club. Not as shmoopy as I expected. Very decent. Especially for what I paid for it. I'm a horrible, horrible person. And! Ben fucking Levin! What the hell is he doing in a Kevin Kline movie without fucking TELLING me?! I've performed alongside that kid since he was twelve. He's my friend. He ought to tell me when he gets cast in Kevin Kline movies, even if he's only onscreen for all of one line. I bloody well noticed that one line, Ben, and I am going to kick your ass the next time I see you.

Time to finish watching all the special features on the DVD...

Just for the record, my second time watching it and All the President's Men is STILL one of the greatest movies of all time. And the ending kicks serious ass. I mean, think about it. This movie tells the true story of the reporters who uncovered the conspiracy behind the Watergate scandal. Anyone even remotely familiar with recent US history knows how it ended (Nixon's resignation). The director/screenwriter's challenge: to present a blatantly obvious ending in an interesting manner. I mean, I guess they could have Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford jumping around giddily whilst watching the TV broadcast of the resignation speech, but... yeah. It doesn't always work, but understatement can be a beautiful thing. Oh, yes. Too bad Woodward and Bernstein didn't spontaneously decide to jump into bed together (or, well, I suppose they might have, but it didn't make it to the screenplay) -- now THAT would have made this a perfect movie, instead of just an excellent one. Ah, well. That's what fanfic is for, right?

Does slashfic involving two characters from a movie based on a true story qualify as FPS or RPS? Hmmm. Must ponder.

I think the fact that I chose to start watching a movie at 1 AM (instead of, say, going to bed) indicates that there is something inherently wrong with me. Ah, well...

Mmmm. Yes. Am definitely grooving to the Sean Bean love now. Some Beanie/Pierce Brosnan would be just lovely, thanks. Or, hell, 006/007. And that's shaken, not stirred. New favorite slashy line: Alec Trevelyan (Beanie) - "James and I shared everything, you know..." Yes, dear, I'm sure you did. ::sniggers::

Plus, The Graduate made me Young!DustinHoffman-happy. Must go rewatch All the President's Men, and slash him with Young!RobertRedford. Ah, it's good to be a slasher...

Finally made it to dance class. Dude, I'm out of practice. That hour and a half felt a lot more intense than it should have. Such is the price of not dancing for six months. Ah, well, I'll get back in shape soon. Maybe lose a little weight, even. Could live without ten pounds. Here's hoping.

Took nice, long shower when I got home. Am now in pajamas. PJs at 7 PM? Why not? Now, off to watch The Graduate for my AP Hell class. Also rented Goldeneye for myself, both in preparation for the new Bond movie and for Beanie goodness. It's funny -- I definitely think Sean Bean was one of the best actors in FotR, and that he deserved the Oscar nomination more than Sir Ian McKellen. Yet I'm not really a Beanie fangirl, and I've never bothered renting his other movies or reading RPS about him. Strange. Well, let's amend that tonight, shall we?

Ooooh, dinner first...

Just went to see Tuck Everlasting, because I was in love with that book when I was a kid. Surprisingly enough, it was a decent film. I mean, they did Disneyify it somewhat, but that's to be expected. Otherwise, it was relatively true to the book, and wonder of wonders, they didn't fuck up the ending. They altered it slightly, of course, to play up the whole look-this-is-a-romance-really aspect, but it worked. And throughout the movie, they would randomly zoom in on the frog, so those of us who know the REAL ending wouldn't feel too horribly cheated by his absence at the end. Heh. Frog. I love that frog.

Benefit of being in a movie theater fillled with kids: I wasn't the only one squealing at the Harry Potter preview. Heh.

Other than that, I have accomplished exactly nothing today. Which would feel really nice, except that I have a lot of random shit that I SHOULD be accomplishing. Like, my AP Hell essay rewrite. ::glares at essay draft:: Okay, it was 2 AM when I wrote that draft, and I KNEW I'd have some reworking to do, and yes Tina and Kat's comments on it are helpful, but I REALLY don't ever want to look at that thing again. Meh. And once that's done, there's the Physics lab, and twelve billion pages of AP Hell reading/notes, and finishing up the lesson plan for my twelve-year-olds, and oh yeah college application. Gah.

Working on weekends should be forbidden.

WTF?

Methinks imdb.com has made a hugeass fuckup. It claims that James Earl Jones has been cast as Collins in the upcoming movie version of the musical Rent. Um. That character can't be much older than 30, maybe 40 at the absolute most. JEJ, cool as he is, is 70 years old. This is not possible. This is not even remotely plausible. Someone please explain it to me. If you need me, I'll be sitting here, staring in mute disbelief at my computer screen.

...because I haven't done ANY of the shit I'm supposed to to for class yet. And this is the first chance I've had to get back onto my LJ since Friday night.

Have missed two more [livejournal.com profile] shardsofnarsil group chats. Fuck. I'm a horrible RPG-er.

Saw Igby Goes Down yesterday. That definitely makes it onto my top twenty movies of all time list. It's "Catcher in the Rye" done right. And bloody hilarious, at that. Hey, the Culkin kid can act! Plus, it had the TTT trailer attached to it. Heh heh heh.

Parties are fun. Watching Robbie Jr. get drunk off his ass is also fun, at least when he's at the dancing-and-singing stage of drunkenness (the emotional stage sucks, though). Getting drunk myself is slightly less fun, mainly because I just get dizzy, but otherwise act exactly the same as usual. I'm just normally a crazy fuck. Also, this may be the first time I've ever played a game of Truth or Dare that involved interesting truths and dares. And lasted for about five hours. And eventually degenerated into read-alouds of a Marquis de Sade book. Heh. It was like a bad PWP, except funnier. Crashed there; didn't feel like cabbing it home at 3:30 AM.

Dragged myself home at around 9:30 AM, slept for longer than I had time to. Saw Ash Wednesday with Lydia and Tash, whee! Not the greatest movie, but Edward Burns is decent and Elijah Wood is adorable. Especially that little van-jumping thing at the end. Don't even mind the fact that he's supposed to be *married* to Rosario Dawson; he was too fucking pettable. And looks too young to be a father, but so it goes. Oh, and you can kinda tell that he filmed this right after LotR wrapped. Some of his scenes are very Frodo-ish. Some. Not all. After much squeeing, finally stopped babbling about the UnadulteratedJoyExpression and set about finally making those Pervy Hobbit Fancier T-shirts. I love my shirt. I've got too damn many quotes, but that's okay. Can't wear it until TTT premiere. [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud, this means you.

Right. 5-7 page Lit paper. Gotcha.
