All of my favorite lust-object DVDs are back in the States, so I settled for the next best thing. The ending of The Usual Suspects is like an intellectual orgasm. Gah. My love for this film increases exponentially every time I watch it. Well done, me, for picking it as one of the ten DVDs I actually brought to Ireland with me.

And wtf, me, for picking Gallipoli instead of, say, Moulin Rouge! or The Sting or sommat. Well, okay, I know why I chose it; it's one of my favorite movies to introduce to people, because almost no one I know has seen it, and when I first came over, I was all optimistic about making friends and shit. Stupid me. So stupid. I should've just loaded up on the movies I love to watch on my own.

mmm, jake.

I just enjoyed a lovely Jake Gyllenhaal double feature, by which I mean I went to the cinema to see Brokeback Mountain and afterwards, realized that the next screen over was about to show Proof, so I slipped in. Because, really, there can never be enough Jake, and I needed a good dose of happy!Jake after BBM. Proof's decent; not as good as the play, but better than I was expecting. And Jake wears GLASSES for one scene, which was hot beyond the words to express it. Pardon my fetish.

Of course, the film also made me all homesick (schoolsick?), because most of it was shot on my university's campus. The UofC looks damn good on film, let me tell you. And then I remembered, hey, didn't I spend a day being an extra in this movie, back when it was filming two and half years ago? Oh, yeah, I did. And I found myself! My first-year roomie and I are quite visible in a number of shots, if, y'know, a person were to know where to look for us. I preened quietly to myself in the theater when I noticed that. And that just brought back memories of the long, annoying hours of being treated like cattle by the extra coordinators. Somewhat ameliorated by sitting within five feet of Jake for several hours. Dear god he was (is) hot. And back then I barely even knew who he was.

So, yeah, there was a point to this post. Probably that Jake Gyllenhaal is hot. Newsflash, I know.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (reflection)
Upon reflection, it occurs to me that in the past TEN YEARS, the only time the Academy actually gave the Best Picture award to the film I actually thought was the best picture was, well, ROTK. (And yes, I'm STILL pissed off about Gladiator beating out both Traffic AND Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And let's not even go into the Forrest Gump year.) So. And while Crash hasn't been playing anywhere in Dublin, Brokeback Mountain has been doing very good business here for several months now. In fact, I think I shall see it again this afternoon. So neener! :P

aw, FUCK.

Why. Why was the ONE surprise the Academy had to offer the BIG FUCKING BEST PICTURE?!

So wrong. So. Wrong. Well, at least Ang Lee got his directing Oscar. But still. Crash? Come on, now. I know the Academy loves its L.A., but...christ.

Hmph.

Well, I found a decent Oscar source, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kalliopeia. Dubbed into Turkish, but, y'know, whatever -- I can still make out the English underneath. High quality images, too. Unfortunately, it needs to stop and re-buffer every five seconds or so. What can you do? I'll take it. And I'll be refreshing youtube.com every commercial break in the hopes that someone's posting the clips as it goes along.

Oh, whatever. I have OSCARS. That's the important thing!

So last night (or this morning) I had a very vivid dream in which I was trying to persuade my boyfriend that we should go see that Casanova movie, citing Heath Ledger's hotness and this one fantastic review I read in the NYTimes a while ago and so on. The dream went on to other strange things from there, but it was a very reasonable argument, so when I woke up I checked online, and sure enough, Casanova just opened in Dublin this week. So I bought a ticket and went.

OMG, most amazingest movie EVAR. It's high farce at its greatest, pure fluff of the best sort. You can tell that all of the actors are enjoying themselves immensely. It's got all the things you expect from a period farce, with your mistaken identities and double entendres and, of course, swordfights. The plot is ridiculous and fun, and the twists -- particularly the final twist -- are joyfully predictable, in the sense that you know it's coming and it's all so beautifully satisfying once it comes. It's got its cheesy moments, but they're very forgivable in light of everything else, and fortunately the script doesn't linger long enough on them to hurt the fun. And oh my goodness, Heath Ledger makes a wonderful Casanova. *fans self* I didn't even project Ennis much. I highly recommend seeing it, or renting it -- it's not the sort of movie that needs to be seen on the big screen, but it's well worth watching when you need a bit of an upper. Good stuff, that.

oscar noms

Huh. The Oscar nominations are very...interesting this year. I dunno, I was surprised by a few of them. Like Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actor. I mean, I LOVE me some Jake, but I really didn't expect that. Interesting.

Okay, now you all need to help me, because I haven't missed watching the Oscars since I was, like, ten, and the thought that I'll probably miss them this year makes me INCREDIBLY SAD. Like, I wouldn't have minded missing last year's, which were boring and I hadn't seen more than two or three of the major films and hadn't liked any of them much anyway. But this year, there's Brokeback Mountain and Capote and other coolness up for multiple awards, and I WANNA SEE. But I'm in Ireland. And I have no TV. Does anyone know if there's some sort of live internet feed, or something, so that I can get my Oscar fix? I don't just want to read a list of the winners; I want to WATCH the damn things, and make fun of people's outfits, and be amused by Jon Stewart's monologues, and all that jazz.

and stuff.

On the plus side, I'm about to rewatch one of my favorite films in the name of research, which is pretty nifty. I wouldn't mind this essay much at all, really, if I only had more time to write it. Ironically, that's why I pushed it back to the last minute -- the other essay was on a topic I had little interest in for a course I detested, so I wanted to get it out of the way first, and of course wound up getting hung up on it for a while because, um, yeah, boring. I always try to save the best for last, or, y'know, tackle the greater of two evils before the lesser. Alas.

Don't worry, the essay whinging will end soon. It has to. They're due tomorrow. >_<

Remind to never, ever choose my own topic for a paper again. Or to choose to analyze a film that was not part of our course, even though the professor said it was okay. Because although every film critic everywhere seems to agree that "12 Angry Men" is a fantastic and insightful film, there has apparently been virtually NO academic criticism written on it, and particularly there is absolutely nothing in the Trinity library even remotely relating to it, aside from a copy of the script. I mean, I have this list of books on 1950s films, and this movie is only ever mentioned in passing as a "great example" of this form of filmmaking or in a list of other really awesome movies of the fifties that we don't have space to elaborate on sorry. If everyone in film studies academia thinks it's so wonderful, WHY DOES NO ONE WRITE ABOUT IT?

Paper due tomorrow. No time to change topic. Must blunder through on my own. BAH.

Also, I really need sleep. *sighs* Twenty-five and a half hours, and it will all be over.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (cowboy love)

narnia

kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (which way did he go george?)
Saw the Narnia movie. I give it a resounding meh. It was a pretty good adaptation of a mediocre story. Don't get me wrong, I used to love the Narnia books -- or, well, I loved the first three, but Lewis lost me with 'Silver Chair' and never won me back, although I read all the way through the rest. They're pretty good kids' books, especially before you're old enough to catch the allegory. But they really don't stand the test of time. Hell, my old 'young adult' fantasy series still grab me more than the Narnia books. Ah, well.

One thing I did like in the movie was the family dynamic between the four kids. Good stuff, that. And christ but Peter was hot. Please don't tell me how old the actor is; I'd rather go on in blissful ignorance of exactly how pervy I am.
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (jailbait)
So I went to Cork yesterday, and wasn't there for very long compared to the round-trip NINE HOURS of bus. Oy. But there I met up with [livejournal.com profile] ldmoonflower and her friend and we saw GoF.

So, on impulse I went out and saw the new Pride & Prejudice film, because I was bored and in need of fictional romance and the local cinema is only 5.50 euro for students on weekdays. I might add that this was my second viewing of said film, the first being right before classes started a few weeks ago. (Apparently, it's not out in the States yet; it's been playing here for about a month already.) And, let me tell you, this movie is a LOT better on second viewing.

a slightly spoilery review )

So yes. It has its faults, but it really is worth seeing. I'll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD. It brings the hotass and indulges my inner romantic, what can I say?

whoa.

So, on my way to buy a CD for my dad's bday present, I passed a movie theater. As you do. And saw a poster for Green Street Hooligans, with "NOW SHOWING" acorss the top. And sorta shrugged and continued on to the CD store, because meh, heard enough about this film from you lot, not really interested.

On the way back from buying the CD, passed the theater again. Glanced at poster again. Noted how hot Elijah Wood looked in it. Remembered the overwhelming hotness of dark!Frodo. Entered movie theater on impulse. Noted that next showing of GSH was in twenty minutes.

Bought ticket.

Okay, I went in skeptical. Very skeptical, albeit impulsively drawn to dark!Elijah. My reaction to GSH? Best damn movie I've seen all year. No, seriously. It made me wibble and chortle to myself in the theater. And...FRODO BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF PEOPLE. Liek.

Go see. NOW.

Also, who is Charlie Hunnam and why did nobody tell me that he is actually the sexiest creature on God's good earth? I want to sex him. Like, a lot. And I know I've seen Charlie/Elijah and Pete/Matt slash around somewhere, so kindly direct me to it, now please.

Saw Everything is Illuminated yesterday. OMG <3. It's been a couple of years since I reaed the book, which is good, I think, because it meant I wasn't nitpicking my way through the movie and could just enjoy it. Wonderful film. <3 Elijah, <3 EUGENE HUTZ OMG, etc. Definitely worth seeing.

Leaving for NYC in a few hours, to bum around my parents' house for a week and have doctors' appointments and such. Expect to be v. bored most of the time, because all of my friends from home will be away at school. And I still have two weeks 'til classes start. Sheesh. And I miss the boyfriend already, even though he's currently about two feet away from me.

One week from today, I will be in Ireland.

Supposedly, someone is coming to install internet in our apartment on Saturday. Which isn't nearly soon enough, but at least now I know that my internetless days WILL come to an end. Or something.

Skimmed through skip=bajillion. Hope all is well, and many many thanks for the birthday wishes! To celebrate, I saw Batman Begins, which was all kinds of awesome. My only non-spoilery complaint was that they could have pushed the inherent darkness of Wayne's character even further. Nolan and Bale played with it a bit, but I really wanted him to be just barely this side of villain. I'm twisted that way. But. Yes. Great movie, much better than most superhero flicks, although I still prefer the X-Men.

Speaking of X-Men, I need to get cracking on that [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon fic. I know what it's gonna be about and such, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the writing part. Probably because I don't much like the main character. It's hard writing from the perspective of a character who bores you. How do I make this person interesting without making them totally OOC? Bah.
kaydeefalls: "you certainly know your trash," deasey said. (i know my trash)
Saw Star Wars III last night. Meh. I enjoyed it. It was better than I and II, but nowhere near the original trilogy. There were flashes of brilliance, which made me sad, because you know what? This could have been a really good movie, if Lucas had hired someone else to write the dialogue. And maybe someone else to direct. And not fucked up a certain aspect of the ending which made a certain scene in Return of the Jedi lose all its emotional impact, for fuck's sake.

Acting was pretty terrible throughout, which I blame on the writing, not the actors. Even Ewan wasn't great, although he got better as it went along. But I defy ANY actor to speak that dialogue without sounding like crap. Gah. At least there was a much higher action-to-dialogue ratio, without TOO many retch-worthy scenes a la Ep II. Alas.

So: worth seeing for closure purposes, and Hayden's not bad when he's just exuding evil and not talking. Better than the travesties that claim to be Eps I and II. But not worth seeing more than the once.

mmm.

Sin City = severe hotness. And when Clive Owen and Rosario Dawson are in the same shot, kaydee go boom. And oh, Frodo, whatever happened to you?

Now, meme:

01. Post a list of 10 TV shows you watch/ed.
02. Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each show.
03. When someone guesses your favourite character, bold the title.
04. When guessed, tell us why you like that character.

1. The X-Files (1/3 so far...)
2. NYPD Blue
3. Whose Line Is It Anyway?
4. Sports Night
5. Coupling
6. Star Trek: TNG

7. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
...crap. I can't think of any other shows I care at all about, and Star Trek is only up there because the boyfriend has been showing me a lot of episodes of late. There are others I used to watch, but I don't really remember characters and such. Ah well.

And X-Files? While I lurve Mulder and Scully and all that, don't guess either of them. I'll give "favorite character" credit to three different chars, only because they're all slightly obscure. Only slightly, though.

ETA: Dude, two people managed to get 5/6 shows right. That's just...ridiculous. But there are still two other slightly obscure XF chars out there, and anyways, I like seeing people guess...oh! I thought of another show I watch (sorta)!

meh.
