Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] andrealyn! *sends virtual!cake and porny KA vibes*

In other news, everyone must go see Hotel Rwanda. Now. It's the Schindler's List of Rwanda, only more so, because we've all learned about the Holocaust but most of us know next to nothing about the Rwandan genocide. You will cry, and you (okay, or maybe just me) will feel vaguely ashamed of the West for not having done shit. And then you will cry some more. And curse the Academy for nominating The Aviator instead of this, those idiots.

Meanwhile, I have a 5-7 page paper due tomorrow. I have not yet started; I didn't receive the paper topic until Friday. Argh.

The director's cut of Donnie Darko ROCKS. Okay, there are some changes to the original that I don't particularly care for, but everything makes so much more SENSE now. (Not complete sense, mind -- that would ruin it. But more sense.) Like the Mad World sequence. It makes sense now.

I also very much enjoyed seeing Jake on the big screen, of course.

I finally saw King Arthur. And, you know, I went into that movie wanting to love it, in spite of its very mixed reviews. And I almost did love it. Almost.

cut for spoilers )

So, I didn't quite love this movie. I had my gripes. But I still really liked it, and I don't understand why so many people are bashing it. Meh. Whatever. To each his own, and all that. I'd take this creative reinterpretation of legend over Troy any day.

(And it definitely brings Teh Hotass, at least.)

There's currently a DVD sale at Borders of the buy-3-get-1-free variety, so yesterday the Boyfriend and I each bought two movies and split the cost.

He got Terminator and Terminator 2.

I got Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting.

This probably says something about us, but I'm not sure what.

(Robert Redford/Paul Newman. OMG old movie RPS. You know you want to.)

Saw Day After Tomorrow yesterday. It was the ideal disaster flick: cool CGI, pretty boy (coughJakeGyllenhaalcough), moderately interesting and amusing supporting characters (Ian Holm!), and plenty of scientific inaccuracies and cheesy lines to make fun of. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining movie. Although I do hate watching my hometown being destroyed in every single disaster movie EVER.

The Boyfriend and I have been having a series of minor spats over the past week or so, of increasing frequency. Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Nothing serious, anyway, and mainly because we're both stressed out about other things and not quite ready to deal with the fact that school ends in two weeks and then we won't see each other again for more than a month. Blah blah personal issues blah blah blah. Okay, done now.

So. Troy. Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed myself. Minor spoilers. )

In other news, where the hell did my free time go, dammit? Oh, right, my show opens this week. Funny, that. But still. Want time to finish stupid zinefic already!

Recently, I watched the HBO miniseries Angels in America, based on the award-winning plays by Tony Kushner. I didn't think it was perfect, and parts dragged a bit, but all in all it was well worth the six hours (!) I spent watching it. Stellar acting, intriguing story, and Kushner writes dialogue very, very well.

Then I made the mistake of checking out the IMDB comment boards.

Okay, AIA is a story of AIDS in 1985 (I'm oversimplifying a LOT here, but yeah). Most of the characters are gay men, some of whom have AIDS. There are sex scenes between men, a "normal" heterosexual sex scene, and even sex between a female angel (Emma Thompson) and another woman (Meryl Streep). For the most part, fairly straightforward movie-type sex scenes. Not even close to porno. But, yes, gay sex which was very hot and pretty but that's another story.

One of the IMDB comments (emphasis mine):
Seems the Gay community will do anything to try to find acceptability. I don't pretend to understand what being a homosexual is like nor am I trying to bash them. But lets face it, this is just another attempt to try to get people to accept an mental problem as normal. I feel that gays should have the same rights as anyone that has weird fetishes. I did find the title very misleading, but this seems to be the case for most gay movies. The acting was good, to say the least. If this movie was to focus on the sad facts of AIDS it didn't. However, I found some scenes very sackening and distasteful. I am surprised they have not had scenes with animals, dead people, etc. to also add to the grossness. If HBO is trying to get viewers by shock they failed.

Many other commenters had complaints along similar lines.

I really hate stupid people.

Big Fish is a really lovely movie. Normally I can't stand the heartwarming-type shit, but this one worked. It's the mildest film Tim Burton has ever made (and, as [livejournal.com profile] filmelder says, "It's a Danny Elfman score without a single violin!"). The acting is spot on, and Ewan McGregor is the coolest man alive --as if we didn't know this already. Yupyup. 'Tis good stuff. I recommend.

Roomie and I just saw Love Actually. SEE IT. We were basically the only people in the theater (10:30 pm, Monday night, who'd a-thunk it?), so we felt free to squee as loudly as we wanted. Colin Firth! Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, the sexiest middle-aged couple ever! The dubious theoretical Keira/hot husband/hot husband's hot best friend threesome! THE LITTLE BOY!

Seriously. Much with the cute and the awwwwwwww, and this from the girl who usually hates sappy movies. It's just that awesome.

Okay. Overall, I enjoyed it. I don't think it was a great movie, but it was definitely enjoyable.

Ridley Scott to direct His Dark Materials movies

So, we have one of the greatest "children's" fantasy series of recent years being made into movies, with the screenplay written by Tom Stoppard and the director being Ridley Scott?

Rock the fuck on.

Right, back to writing paper and studying for Calc.

I spent 14 hours today being an extra in that Proof movie thing.

o_O

That was really, really exhausting, especially given the amount of sitting around and doing nothing we did. But! Was extra! So, when the movie comes out next summer, look for me and my roomie in the father's memorial scene. We're the two girls sitting directly across the aisle from Jake Gyllenhaal.

Did I mention that we were directly across the aisle from Jake Gyllenhaal? Oh. Yeah. We were. Which meant that I basically stared lustfully at him for about three or four hours. Rock the fuck on.

Yes, I know this pales in comparison to those of you lucky, lucky folks who met Sean / Elijah / Dom / etc at C4, but still. Spending an extended amount of time within five feet of Jake Gyllenhaal -- who, might I add, is extremely hot in person -- was pretty damn cool. He bops to his MP3 music in a geeky manner! He gives us adorable "Meh?" expressions when he doesn't know what the director is talking about! He ANGSTS (in character)! Oh, and some Gwyneth somebody was there, too...

This should be the end of my extended series of Jake Gyllenhaal lust!posts, so for those of you who don't know who the hell he is and/or don't care, you won't have to deal with any more of him. Until the movie comes out.

oh, yeah...

Saw Bend It Like Beckham last night, finally. Keira pretty, Indian girl also pretty, Indian girl's gay best friend extremely gay pretty as well, script clever and humorous. And I finally understand [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud's obsession with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Because GUH.

Roomie and I definitely came out of movie theater going GUH over Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

And at the end the gay Indian best friend is so totally lusting over Beckham while everyone else is saying goodbye to the girls and it's bloody hilarious.

Homework? Qu'est-ce que c'est "homework"? Je ne comprends pas...

*ogles Frodo, as per usual*

Too much pretty. Can't focus on work.

[This entry was mostly written about two weeks ago. Just got around to finishing it.]

I love movies. I want to be a real film geek. Unfortunately, my knowledge of films has always been severely limited when it comes to anything pre-Star Wars. Thus was born my Classic Film Self-Education Project, wherein [almost] every week this summer I went out and rented two movies out of the "classics" section of my local video store. In alphabetical order, even (although I skipped a few letters due to lack of interesting-looking films). I doubt anyone will be interested in my findings, but...

many movies )
kaydeefalls: blank with text: "white. a blank page or canvas. so many possibilities..." (squeefully yours)
Arrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Mmm, I love this movie. Especially seeing it for the second time, free, with good friends, and (icing on the cake) a certain Mad Hatter sitting next to me. Who introduced me to the heart!view method of movie-watching, being whenever the two Romantic Leads (TM) are having a Heartfelt Moment (TM), you use your thumbs and index fingers to shape a heart and watch the screen through it. Heh. I am far too easily amused.

On another note, an ever-so-slightly belated Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] lotrjunkie!

My LJ is officially one year old.

573 entries. 1703 comments posted. 1752 comments received. 92 friends. 98 friend-ofs. 12 communities. [livejournal.com profile] housemouse gave me the code. She and [livejournal.com profile] gabbyhope were the first two people I friended. And so on, and so on.

Lookee lookee! I have a livejournal! ::bounces around:: Thank you housemouse!
Okay, I'm calm now. Really. Truly. Now I have to think of what to do with this thingy...
But for the moment....wheeee!

Wow, I haven't changed much, have I? Whoops.

...

In other news, have FINALLY seen Pirates of the Caribbean, and now I really want to have Johnny Depp's blatantly gay and poncy babies. Geoffrey Rush coninues to be God. Jonathan Pryce continues to unleash the theater!geek in me. Kiera Knightley is gorgeous and wonderful. And, heck, Orli is pretty damn pretty as well. Plot somewhat predictable, lines acceptably cheesy, and an overall amusing and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Although every time Orli did anything involving weapons, I had a Legolas moment. And there's this one line he has, something like "We must fight!", which was entirely Legolas, and I actually had to bite my hand to keep from squealing like a bloody fangirl.

Also, the previews were for that Hidalgo flick, and I kept squeeing quietly to myself and wondering why the hell Aragorn was speaking with a Southern accent.

Goooood times.

So I finally watched all the special features on the X-Men 1.5 DVD, and decided that I wanted to have Bryan Singer's brilliant little gay babies. So I thought, hmmm, I should check out some of the other movies he's directed. So I go over to IMDB to find out what other movies he's directed.

The Usual Suspects. One of my top five favorite movies of all time. Was directed by Bryan Singer.

::bonks head into wall::

I really should know these things.
